1. Chapter: The guest
It was one of those typical cold summer evening, as the wind has blown so bleakly that it stripped everyone from all the warmth when a little figure appeared on the deserted streets. Her grey jacket melted into the environment, and her staff, which was held in her tiny hand was at least half a meter longer then the person herself. It was not like the stranger was bigger than a five-year-old child. The sound of her footsteps and tapping of her stick mended with the hissing of passing cars and the dying raindrops melodies. The stranger passed slowly on the side-walk alone, not interested that her long coat was quit busy to spin off the enormous amount of water. If someone had seen this picture, would had felt like there is a ghost approaching from the underworld, who is wandering aimlessly through the night.
The city's yellow eyes blinked, showing the life which was hidden in them. The buildings tried to convince each other with their different forms, who from them is the most beautiful, but despite their effort they couldn't make the stranger to stop and look at them. Except one. This one was not a flagrant high and didn't had striking cravings on it. It was like the other round houses just a bit bigger, with a winter garden and a small outbuilding. The stranger eyed the building for a while, then she opened the fence and approached the front door.
The bell was too high to be able to reach, so she hit it with his staff. She waited a bit to see if someone will take a pity on her and lets her in. Her hopes came true when the door opened and a blond-haired, middle-aged woman appeared.
“Yes? How can I help you?” asked sweetly.
“Good evening, Miss! I'm sorry to bother you, but could you have pity this old woman, and give a place to sleep on this rainy night? As payment I can bless your home, which will chase all the evil spirits away. They will never cause nightmares your loved ones in you household.” Said the little stranger. Her voice was hoarse, remembering you to croaking crows, while her wrinkled face and grey hair came visible in the dim lights, she kept her eyes closed, make you think she was blind. On the other hand there was the younger woman, who also had her eyes closed usually as well, but now is she starring wide-eyed to the stranger. Despite the cold, the blond woman was wearing just a leopard textured top, with a yellow stretch leggings, and matching yellow high heels.
She hadn't thought long to answer “Oh, of course, I will to help you! Please come in! Would you like some hot tea? You must have be freezing in this storm! My name's Mrs. Brief!” Said slightly anxiously, while the helped the old matron to pull down the coat. The staff changed from one of her hand to the another, not letting it go for a moment, even if it would have been easier to remove the wet clothing without it. Mrs. Brief thought that the old woman wouldn't be able to stand without it, so she didn't offered to leave it by the entrance.
“Thanks for the help dear! My name is Noeven, and I accept the hot drink. Gods may bless you for your generosity!” She stepped out from her black shoes, she received a pair of pink slippers on her brown stockingand followed her host to the open living room. Long, dark green, dress appeared which covered the old ladies body. Now Mrs. Brief had a better look of her hair as well, with loose bun on the top of the head, in colour gray like ashes from the fireplace.
“Please take a seat on the couch! I'll back in a minute!” and with that the bold woman disappeared through a door.
The old woman shuffled further inside the house, and took a seat on the soft beige couch. Her green dress stuck out from the seat. She looked first right and left despite her closed eyes, like she measured the place, the furniture, the pictures on the wall, and the bookcase in the corner. When Mrs. Brief reappeared with a tray, she started to smile again.
“Oh, I thought, you might be hungry, so I brought you some snacks. There is always some leftover in our family.” Mrs. Brief giggled about that “We have a few free rooms, so I'm sure we can easily find you an empty one.”
“Oh, thank you so much, dear!” she pounced from her seat and the sat down on a pillow, before the tray, and started to eat.
“May I ask you what brought you into this town in such a bad weather?” Sat the blonde woman opposite to her guest.
“I travel around the world looking for lost children and help them find their way in their life.” she took another sip of tea, then bite into one of the sandwiches. Apparently she liked it, because one bite was followed by more, and gradually it disappeared from the tray.
“How noble mission! Then aren't you a nun from an orphanage?” and poured her own mug full.
“Umm... yes, I guess I'm some somebody like that... But in my case the orphanage told me who should I exactly search for. You can imagine dear, it's hard to find this young man in such a large city, and unfortunately I've run out of money.” then she took the next sandwich.
“I see.” Hummed the host in her thoughts once “Maybe we can help you. My husband is well-known inventor, and our daughter is the leader of our family-business, so with us I don't it will take long to find the person you are looking for.” She just wanted to stand and call for her husband, as she saw Noevens shooting hand gesture.
“Leave it my dear. This is my job. Furthermore, I would be afraid that with the big attention the boy would be frightened and would run away. Besides I don't have a picture by myself, so it would be difficult to initiate a search.” she took another sip from the tea “I know what I'm talking about dear. know that child. Thanks for your help, but unfortunately, need to do this alone.” the old lady smiled at the blonde.
Mrs. Brief got bit sad, and put her delicate hand gracefully to her face on anxious “So there's nothing I to do... Would you like some cookies before I show you your room?” and again Mrs. Brief have disappeared, not waiting for her guests response. A minutes later, she came back with a slice of raspberry cake. She pushed it in the hands of Noeven.
The old lady thought this is her way to build down the frustration. She started to eating “Hmm... this is really good darling!” praised the cake after the first bite.
The blonde woman could only chuckle “Thank you Mrs. Noeven. Baking cakes is one of my hobbies, but a compliment feels always good. Would you like another one?”
“No, thank you dear, I'm full but nevertheless it was delicious.” She’s put her plate on the table.
“Then I may show you your room.” Mrs. Brief stood up. She waited until her guests stood up as well, then she headed towards the bedrooms.
“You have a very beautiful house!” commented the matron while looking at the pictures of the walls, which were in the hallway.
“Oh, thank you! Well, you know my husband and I built it together...” - and she started to talk about the house, and her husband and her daughter, and had a break just until other woman asked something other.
In the hallway Noeven heard a noise “Can you tell me my dear, what is this strange humming?”
The Mrs. Brief stopped to listen. Then she realized what the old woman is talking about. In the last years they became so used this sound that most of the time they haven't even heard it “Oh, it looks like Vegeta is still training in the gravity room. He is the husband of my daughter. He's working hard, because he can defend the Earth if a bad guy comes to destroy it.” and then stepped ahead down the corridor, with the light lit up autocratically before her.
“You seem to have a nice son-in-law.” Noeven paused for a moment before the door, from where noise whispered, but then she continued to follow her host.
As they reached the empty room, Mrs. Brief opened the door to let the old woman in. They have agreed that the matron will say her blessing tomorrow morning. She'll have more energy and spirits of the house are more benignant too. After a short introduction of the rooms, Mrs. Brief said goodnight and closed the door, letting the old woman to sleep. Noeven sat down on the bed with a wide smile on her face “So little “orphans” usually are hiding in this kind of places.” she giggled once, and then went to bed, but she stayed awake. She knew she has to wait till the right moment comes.
