Three weeks now, Odessa thought as she swallowed the last of the candy bars that she and her brother had taken with them when they ran away from home. Her brother Shatero had finished his half of them days ago and even managed to pity Odessa out of parts of her's. But now it was gone and they were truly starting to starve. They left their home three weeks ago the two of them, and as bad as things looked they still did not regret it.

Odessa looked down at the dirt filled street as she began to replay in her mind the events of their life that had brought them to this point. You could say it all began when they were born. The two fraternal twins Odessa with beautiful blond hair and light blue eyes resembling her mother's and Shatero a short scrawny boy with dark black hair. Their mother had taken to them immediately after they were born, their father on the other hand saw them only as double the burden on himself. Their father was an accountant, a paper pusher and he was always more concerned with other people's finances then by his own families well being. Their mother who spent all her time caring for her children made up for this neglect. But that all changed when their mother met a tragically fatal end when she was in a car accident.

After her death their father grew even more distant from his children but more painful then his time away from them was that his time with them had become nothing but a never ending argument between him and his children. He yelled at them over everything, over messy rooms, unclean dishes, cloths that were not folded right anything he could find that the two had done wrong he would hammer them over it until he pushed them off to bed. As time went on and the children got older and learned to yell back, their father became more physically forceful. Especially towards Shatero, Odessa remembered, he would call Shatero down to the basement alone. She never heard a yell or scream but when Shatero came back up she could see the scars and bruises on him. To Odessa on the other hand their father had became extremely protective over and never allowed her to even be around anyone other then her brother. Because of this treatment the two twins had grown to depend heavily on each other. They became a team and were able to understand each other without even using words but with a slightest look could tell the deepest thoughts of the other.

This had gone on for 6 years since their mother's tragic death and finally they had both had enough. When Shatero came home with a new leather jacket he had traded another kid, their father saw it and immediately thought Shatero had stolen it. Without giving a second for Shatero to explain he grabbed Shatero by the arm and threw him into the wall. He began to punch Shatero over and over. Shatero tried to fight him back but he was no match for him. And when Odessa tried to defend her brother her father simply grabbed her arm and threw her across the room like it was nothing. After that he gave Shatero another punch in the face cutting open his lip. He yelled at Shatero but he couldn't hear him all Shatero could do was look at his sister across the room crying her eyes out. This was the last straw, Odessa and Shatero packed their bags the next day after their father had gone to work. They left their home hours before he would be on his way back. They spent a day walking before they managed to get a ride on a farm truck taking them miles from their home city.

That was two weeks, 6 car rides, and 4 days of walking ago. She was trying to remember the name of the city they were in, Nikkei Town or something like that she thought. It didn't matter really, all that mattered now was getting food and for her and her brother to stay alive, but she still did not regret leaving.
