Shatero had been watching them for hours now, two ladies passing by the ally he and his sister were resting in. Either one of them he could just run up and grab their purse and that would be the last they'd see of him. And then he and Odessa would have money at least enough to buy a meal. But he knew his sister would not approve and he hated to disappoint her. Besides it would be a hellish guilt trip when raiding the purse later on, going through photos and personal mementos that he had no right to be going through. He scratched the back of his head on the string he was using to tie back his long bonny tail. Whatever that string he found was it was damn itchy against the back of his neck. As he scratched it he looked down and saw the small tin cup throw aside in the ally, just like them. He picked it up and jumped to his feet to the sidewalk where the people were walking up and down in masses. He proceeded to shake the can and go up to everyone he saw asking, pleading, begging for money for any spare change they could spare for the homeless boy.

Odessa watched her twin as he went along the sidewalk looking at everyone with his dark brown eyes almost at tears asking for money. He could not have gotten more then two dollars in the hours he had been trying she thought. They needed money and badly she didn't know how many more days they could go without food and how many more weeks they could go without a bed to sleep in or a bath to bathe in. She ran her fingers through her coarse blond hair and almost cried. Ever since she was a little girl her mother would sit Odessa on her lap and brush her long blond beautifully soft hair. Odessa's hair care had always been a source of bride to her. Now her hair was knotted and tangled and bits of dirt stuck in it. It was a constant reminder of all the small luxuries that she had taken for granted until now. She closed her eye's fighting back the water filling her light blue eyes. She wiped the edge of her tattered shirtsleeve across her face. Her cloths were so dirty she thought. She missed wearing her nice clean outfits she always had, her nice jeans and clean shirts and especially her dresses she would wear on any special occasion. Now she was in the same dirty jeans and torn up long sleeve shirt she had been wearing for days now. It was almost winter and she realized it was going to get very cold soon and very hard for them to survive.

Only five dollars and twenty-two cents! Shatero wanted to scream or go into a nice corner and hide from the world forever. He had been trying for hours and this would not do them any good, maybe buy a sandwich and drink at some cheep fast food place. He emptied the cup and put the money in the pocket of his brown leather jacket and went back over to his sister. "Any luck?" she asked him. "Enough for breakfast in the morning" he said lowering his head in disgrace. Odessa smiled lightly as she lifted his head up to meet hers. "Hey that means we have another day to live so don't be so glum brother." He stared at her for a little while, she was right but that did not make him fell any better about their situation. "Man Shatero you need a shave." she spurted out suddenly. Shatero could not help but chuckle at that, the thought of something so trivial as the growth of his facial hair being brought up now was just to funny. He was almost at tears from laughing when Odessa touched his shoulder looking at him with that smile of hers that smile that their mother had, that it'll all be ok smile. She was always able to do that he thought, even though they were twins he always had the felling that she was the older one. He was the one who wasn't afraid to do anything that they needed for fun or now for survival and she was the one who kept Shatero comforted and felling like he still had family still had someone who cared about him. He hugged his sister as he felt a wet drop hit his nose. He looked up expecting to see rain starting to fall, but instead he saw the sky starting to fill with dropping snow.
