Chapter 7: Suicide as an Answer

Saria slowly leaned against the wall, utterly stunned and quickly becoming bitter. So that's how to kill it. Isn't it? The connection I feel with this place…How much faster I heal…I am a Gama. I may not have inherited their powers, but that's not the point, is it, mom? You lied to me. Gama ishereditary. I have their blood in me and I am both Ice and Lightning. I'm the one those fucking rhymes are talking about, aren't I? So then why the FUCKwould you kill yourself before delivering me to that witch-family of yours?! If I'm your goddamn weapon, then why? Why?!

Saria closed her eyes at the thought, only to be greeted with the memory of finding her mother right after school. It had been just another usual day of 3rd grade for her, but when she got home… Even now she could still smell the sickly sweet aroma of death that permeated the small trailer house. It had slammed into Saria like a brick wall. She had instantly known that something was wrong. She could still see herself dropping her backpack in terrified shock, running thru the house to her mother's bedroom as fast as she could. Sensing that that's where the damage would lay. She still regretted ever having thrown open that door. The sight of seeing her mother like that had been imprinted into her mind ever since. She tried to close her mind against the onrushing memory, but still it came. She still saw the dark puddle of blood pooling around her mother's fallen form. The knife held limply in her lifeless hand, forever stained with her blood. The same blood that trickled along her wrist, joining the rest of the thick liquid now seeming to drench the entire floor of the room.

Saria tried to push the memory deep into her mind, where it belonged, when all of a sudden the ground roughly rolled, throwing everyone to the ground. They all immediately got back up, looking around intently for the blood demon, but there was no sign of it. Just like the previous scares they'd had before finally finding the Blood Demon rhyme. Yet Vegeta and Trunks still braced themselves for a second attack, remembering what had happened with Goku.

Saria, however, still couldn't push her memories away. All she could think about was the moment when she had found her mother… Her funeral… Her father… Her whole world quickly going from bad to worse, now that her mother wasn't there to help her through it all. Saria didn't know anyone then. She had had no friends when she had died. And then everything with her father… Her whole life had come crashing down around her.

With the flood of depressing memories, Saria almost didn't notice when the ground rolled a second time. Even harder than before. Vegeta and Trunks remained standing, tho Saria fell. When she hit the ground, Saria finally managed to force herself to snap out of it. She kneeled guardedly up, waiting for when the Blood Demon attacked for real. Vegeta and Trunks were also ready for anything the creature might throw at them.

Suddenly, the Blood Demon appeared beside Saria and jumped at her. She gasped and quickly ducked under it as it flew overhead. But still it managed to rake one of its sharp claws across her back before it landed, disappearing into the sand before the other two could react. Saria was trying to ignore the white-hot, stinging pain as best she could, staring at the spot where it had disappeared. Trunks looked at her worriedly, but she slowly started to get up once again before he could come over to her, looking around for the blood demon as she did so. Once again, everyone was braced for an attack, which came almost immediately.

A powerful wave of sand knocked into the person closest to Saria, almost forcing Trunks to the ground, as the blood demon pounced on Saria again. She ducked and rolled out of the way as Vegeta quickly attacked it with a powerful kick to its back. That sent the demon flying down the hallway, where it promptly disappeared into the sand as soon as it landed. Vegeta swore, knowing that fighting it was going to be more difficult than he originally thought if it could disappear into the ground so easily.

Trunks meanwhile, had been slammed into a wall when the sand wave had hit him. And now he was back on his feet near Saria, waiting for the creature's next attack. Saria was also on her feet, although now her back was really starting to hurt with all the sand that had been pushed into it when she had dodged the blood demon's attack. Then, the blood demon showed up again. This time it threw 3 separate waves of sand at the 3 of them in an attempt to separate them. Vegeta and Trunks leaned into the assaults after Trunks had quickly grabbed Saria and was shielding her from the sand.

Abruptly, the attacks stopped, even tho they all were buried under the sand by now. They quickly dug their ways to the surface, Vegeta reaching there first, followed quickly by Trunks and Saria. All 3 immediately got up, waiting for the next attack. The other 2 were fine, but Saria was breathing kind of heavily. Several minutes passed, no one moving or talking as they listened intently for any sign of the Blood Demon. Finally, they all started to relax, little by little, when still no attack came.

Vegeta and Trunks looked at her. Trunks looked worried, whereas Vegeta merely looked. "Are you alright?" Trunks made a move to check her back, but she wouldn't let him.

"I'm fine. It doesn't hurt." Saria told him.

"Even if that were true, it should still be looked at!" Trunks argued.

Saria rolled her eyes. "With what medical equipment? Calm down. It's a little scratch, nothing more."

Trunks looked like he wanted to argue further, but he knew she was right about there being no point since there really was nothing he could do about it. "Well, as soon as we get out of here, I'll make you get that looked at."

She half-smiled at his concern, until the full affect of what he said slammed into her. As soon as we get out of here. Saria looked up at the Blood Demon rhyme. Trunks and Vegeta noticed and misinterpreted her faltered look.

"It's alright Saria, we'll get out of here eventually. Hell, we already managed to defend ourselves against the blood demon. I bet if we were to get to the others, we would be able to take it down." Trunks said in an attempt to cheer her up.

Saria gave him a faint smile, knowing full well that it would end up otherwise. She had made her decision the moment the pain in her back had taken on a different feel. Where the slash from the blood demon was, she started to feel an icy sensation, then a warm numbing feel. She had reached behind her earlier to feel how bad the wound was to make this feeling, when she had gotten the biggest shock of her life. Instead of blood, she felt a smooth, hard surface that was warm to the touch and felt like plastic stone. Or crystal. She'd never felt anything like it before. It was as if her back had started to mutate into a diamond or something.

When that thought crossed her mind, she remembered what she had thought of earlier. This confirmed what she knew what she had to do. But first they needed to get everyone into the center of the maze. She was scared of what might happen, and she remembered her promise to herself so long ago. After her mother had died, she'd made a promise long ago not to kill herself. Saria had seen it first hand, but she wouldn't take the chicken-shit way out. She wasn't gonna be her mother, no matter how bad it got. Life sucked and she knew it. But she was no coward.

She remembered everything she went thru before her mother decided to end things and abandon her daughter. Her weapon. The beatings that even her mother was unable to avoid, tho she somehow knew a few tricks that managed to placate `father'. She remembered what happened at the funeral. The state had had to pay for it since he wouldn't. And only she went. Then life at the house. She had started to stay later and later at school, not wanting to face him. Truth was, she was scared shit-less of him. She was so terrified that she had even gotten ready to run away. That's when she had finally made herself look at what she was doing and saw that running away was almost as bad as suicide. It was still a coward's way out. She was going to get thru this. Get thru school with top grades and get a schlorship into a good college and get herself out of that hellhole the honorable way. And to her, honor was everything.

Saria's face had shown no reactions to the memories flashing through her mind. She was very disciplined in hiding her emotions. She realized that the shock of the whole situation down in the labyrinth had made her far too sensitive, and she wouldn't allow it anymore. She would calm down and think rationally about this, as was her way. Whatever she might feel was weak and irrelevant. She hadn't figured anything out early enough, being so emotional recently. Logic was something she could and should hold on to. She turned to Trunks, lying thru her teeth:

"You're right Trunks. Let's try to find the others and beat this thing."

He smiled in relief, thinking that she hadn't believed him earlier, and said "Hai." He then turned to his father to figure out how to try and find out how to get to the others. They quickly came to the conclusion that they should sense where the others were (since that was the only thing about their powers that still worked), and if they got to a dead end, Saria could just read the map on the walls to try and figure out how to reach them from there.
