Chapter 2: Love is A Battlefield
Trunks walked into the school looking for his best friend and avoiding his most recent ex-girlfriend, Tina. He was pretty sure that most of her sadness over their breakup was gone now and replaced by intense anger. Maybe if he could just avoid her for a few more days it would be water under the bridge. He could always use Goten as a shield if it turned out otherwise.
He saw Goten standing by his locker down the hall and stopped in shock. He was wearing jeans and a tight, white, shirt. He looked like he had just walked right out of a magazine advertisement, and he looked hot. Trunks shook his head, had he just said that this best friend looked hot? He gathered his composure and walked down the hall towards him. "Hi Goten," he said with a lump in his throat. Then he cleared his throat and leaned against the next locker as if there had not been anything different about his greeting. Goten watched him standing there and took a deep breath, he remembered that he had decided to try and win Trunks over. Even though he knew that it was most likely a lost cause, he might as well start now.
"Hi Trunks," he replied, with a slightly breathy voice that came more naturally than he had expected it to. Then he continued with, "You are looking good today."
"Thanks," Trunks commented nonchalantly and then he walked on towards his first class. Goten was stunned, the only way he felt he could have been more obvious was to have it in neon lights above his head. He sighed and slammed his locker door closed. The sound of it seemed to draw the attention of everyone in the hallway but Trunks. He was not going to give up that easily, they would be apart for their first class but they had their second period class together. That gave him an hour to come up with something good.
When second period rolled around, he had still not come up with one halfway decent idea. He looked over at Trunks and saw that he had fallen asleep on his desk while the teacher was lecturing. He found himself smiling at the adorable image and got an idea. After class he approached Trunks and commented, "You were awfully cute sleeping on your desk like that. I could have just pinched your cheeks." Then he waited for Trunks's response. The comment earned him a laugh but no other response. It was not even lunch and he was starting to feel disappointed. Their next two classes were separate so he would not see him again until lunch. He was going to have to buckle down and come up with something. He watched Trunks walk into his next class with desire in the pit of his stomach and a sinking heart.
When he saw him at lunch they did as they usually did and got a table by themselves. Even though they were both respectively popular in their own ways, they had decided from the moment they had started high school together to always sit by themselves at lunch. However, no sooner than they had taken their seats and attractive girl approached them. "Hi my name is Julie," she introduced herself. "You are looking damn sexy today Trunks," she continued. Goten was shocked by her audacity and perplexed by the very obvious reaction it got from Trunks. He smiled reflexively and Goten instantly felt invisible.
He wished Trunks would just get rid of her but instead he replied, "You are looking pretty hot yourself Julie."
"I heard you broke up with Tina," she commented smiling. "I was wondering if you would like to give me a call sometime." Then she handed him a piece of paper with her name and number on it. He watched silently as Trunks pocketed it and felt his jealousy build up inside of him. He got up and quickly left the table without saying a word to either of them. He did not talk to Trunks at all through the next two periods.
Finally, in trigonometry class, Trunks passed him a note.
The Note
Hey Goten,
Is there something wrong with you? You have been acting really strange recently. If you don't tell me I can not to anything about it. Are you jealous because I am getting all of the girls?"
End Note
Goten was furious, he crumpled up the note and tossed it into the nearby wastebasket. He looked over at Trunks and met his eyes letting the anger that he felt show openly. If Trunks was really so blind that he thought he was jealous then maybe he needed to get some space from him for a few days. He was supposed to go over to Capsule Corp and work on homework but that was not sounding like a good idea right now. He wondered what Trunks thought now after seeing him pissed off.
Trunks was confused by the reaction. He had put the part about being jealous in the note just for laughs. However, judging by the reaction he was getting maybe Goten really was jealous. He should probably talk to him about it when he came over after school that day. Then bell rang and Goten walked away without even turning around. Trunks did not follow him he just went home and hoped that Goten would show up in a few hours after he had calmed down.
He never came and when it was time for dinner, Trunks had begun to feel a little depressed. He and Goten had not had a fight for as long as he could remember, it surprised him that something as trivial as a little note could infuriate Goten that much. Their friendship should have been stronger than that. He went dowstaris to join his family for dinner and was so preoccupied that he did not feel the two pairs of eyes watching him closely.
Every sigh drew Bulma and Vegeta's total attention, both of them were worried by Trunks sad expression and mopey behavior. Bulma looked over at Vegeta and realized that he was not going to say or do anything. She took it upon herself to ask Trunks some questions. Maybe if she got him talking, she could find out what was wrong.
"How are you and Tina doing?" she asked Trunks, cheerfully.
"Who's Tina?" asked Vegeta.
"Trunks's girlfriend of course," she replied. Vegeta was surprised he had not even known that his son had a girlfriend.
"Ex," Trunks mumbled.
"Huh?" Bulma and Vegeta asked in unison.
Trunks sighed and replied, "She is my ex-girlfriend now. I dumped her yesterday." No one said anything else so he asked, "May I could be excused?" Bulma nodded mutely and watched him walk back upstairs to his room. Bulma and Vegeta looked at each other and they both realized that they were worried about Trunks. After the table had been cleared, Vegeta took Bra with him into the living room and Bulma sat at the table by herself wondering what her options were to find out what was wrong with Trunks.
Finally, an idea popped into her head and she reached for the phone and dialed the Son residence. She was happy to hear Goten answer. "Hi Goten, this is Bulma. I was wondering if I could talk to you about Trunks."
"Sure," he replied. "But, I am not really sure if I will be able to help you." He really hated that she was putting him on the spot. "What exactly do you want to know?"
"Well for starters," she commented. "He has been acting kind of strange. I was wondering if you knew why. He told me that he broke up with his girlfriend but I somehow don't think that is the cause of his behavior."
`Well, to be honest, I agree with you," he replied. "He did not seem bothered at all when he broke up with Tina. Maybe it is just some phase." Then he sighed and said, "Well, Bulma I have to get off the phone and start on my homework. I'll see what I can find out for you." Then he hung up the phone.
After he had hung up the phone, Goten thought over everything that Bulma had said. He had noticed Trunks acting different in any way recently, so why would he act that way in front of his parents? His curiosity was definitively growing and he was tempted to go see Trunks and talk to him, but he was also pretty upset over that little note he received that afternoon. Maybe he should go over that Saturday that would give him a few days to calm down; when he went over maybe they would talk then. He went to his room and lay down on his bed, looking once again at the picture of them together. If only he could tell him his feelings.
Saturday came faster than he expected. In some ways the absence from Trunks that week at school had been refreshing. Now, he was ready to face him and see if he noticed anything unusual. He dressed in his orange and blue gi that looked like his father's and flew over to Capsule Corp. to see if Trunks would feel like sparring.
As he landed outside, he saw him standing there also dressed in training clothes. He was preoccupied by working on a console on the outside of the gravity chamber. Goten smiled and greeted him by calling out, "What's up, Panties?"
Trunks quietly replied in a smooth and calm voice, "Not much, Thong."
Goten continued, "Well, that's too bad because-," and then he realized what Trunks said. "Hey did you just call me thong?!" he exclaimed.
Trunks turned around to face him and burst out laughing. "About time you caught on Chibi," he commented. Goten scowled in response which only made him laugh harder. "So what are you doing here?" he asked a few moments later. "Considering that you have been avoiding me all week at school."
He looked at the ground and was unsure of what to say. He could be honest about it, which would more likely get him a fight than an apology, or he could just lie; he chose the latter. "I was just preoccupied, I am sorry I avoided you."
"It's okay," Trunks replied. "I understand. Well anyway, I was about to do some training would you like to join me?"
"What do you say we go into the woods and do some real sparring like we did we were kids?" Goten asked.
"I guess that would be fine," Trunks replied. "But I thought that you got enough of controlling your strength doing sports at school?" Goten sighed. He never seemed to miss an opportunity to pick on him for being involved in sports. Trunks had scoffed at him when he had first shown interest in it. He remembered him saying that it was a waste of time and it just let stupid people believe that they were actually pretty tough.
"You know why I do it," Goten replied. "So stop hassling me about it."
"I did not mean to give you a hard time, I just do not understand the motivation of it," he said apologetically. Then they took off for the clearing they had always played in as children. They sparred without speaking for about an hour before stopping to lie down in the grass. "I think I am going to take a quick little nap," Trunks commented. Then he took off his sweat-drenched shirt and tossed it to the side.
Goten could barely keep his tongue in his mouth at the sight. He was very tempted to drool like a cartoon character. He watched him cross his arms behind his head and close his eyes. He stood up and decided to go wash off in a nearby creek. It was getting harder and harder for him to not express himself openly. If this kept up he was going to end up just blurting out his feelings and probably losing Trunks as his best friend. After about a half hour of swimming in the shallow creek, he headed back to the clearing and saw Trunks tossing around on the ground in what looked like the middle of a very bad dream.
Trunk's Dream
He was sitting on his bed nude; the moonlight was shining through the un-curtained balcony doors. He fell back on the bed and closed his eyes with a sigh. Suddenly, he felt someone's arms wrap around him and he opened his eyes to find his eyes meeting Goten's dark onyx eyes. "Chibi," he whispered softly with a questioning note in his voice.
Goten smiled in response and began to softly caress his body. He leaned down and kissed him softly which caused a moan to rumble in his throat. He tasted sweet like chocolate and it was driving him wild. Part of his brain acknowledged that this was a dream, but he also realized that it was a dream he had no desire to wake up from. He saw that Goten was naked and began to touch him everywhere that he could reach.
Goten pushed him back down in to the mattress and straddled his hips. He gently stroked him until he was hard. The pleasure he was feeling was indescribable. Goten lowered down and licked at his manhood leaving it wet and slick. Then he sat upright once again and moved himself down onto him. Goten began to moan loudly as he rode, "Trunks. . . .Trunks . . .TRUNKS!" Suddenly, Trunks felt as if he were being shaken.
Then he bolted upright and looked around him, assessing his surroundings. He saw that Goten was sitting on his knees beside him and he looked really worried. "Are you okay?" he asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine," he bit out in response. Then he turned away and looked off in the distance. Why the hell had he had a dream like that about Goten? He looked back over at Goten and saw that concern was still on his face.
"I am glad you are okay," he commented finally. "Because with the way you were moaning and screaming, I had thought you were dying." This statement caused Trunks to blush even more, though he was also relieved; this meant that he must not have called out any names. He got up from the ground and walked off to splash some cold water on his face. He was hoping that it would cool other parts of his body as well but it did not seem to have any effect. He sensed Goten's presence behind him and heard him say, "I did not mean to embarrass you."
"You didn't," Trunks replied. "I just had a really weird dream." Then he stood up and looked up to see that the sun was high in the sky. "I guess we had both better head home."
"Don't you want to talk about your dream?" Goten asked. "And besides what your rush to get home all of a sudden?"
"I don't really want to talk about it!" he snapped back. "Why don't you just leave me alone and go home?"
"Fine," Goten snapped. "I give up trying to talk to you. Either you just shut me out, or you treat me like crap and accuse me of jealousy. Well I may not be the stone cold fox that you are but if I wanted a girlfriend I could get one. My bad luck was that I fell for someone who barely acknowledges my existence; and I do not know why I am telling you this because it is not like you give a damn." Then he flew off in the direction of his house without giving Trunks a chance to say anything.
Trunks cursed himself and stomped his foot in a tantrum. Well, he had obviously not handled that situation as well as he could have. He considered following him but decided against it and instead just went home. He would give him a few more days to cool down and he would talk to him at school on Monday.
Goten entered his house still in a rage and went up to his room to sulk. Trunks had definitely pushed him too far this time. He looked around his room at all of the pictures of him and Trunks together and felt his eyes begin to tear up. The problem was that in all honesty he was more hurt than angry. He needed some sort of outlet for all of his feelings. Then his eyes landed on an old typewriter that his mom had given to him after finding it in the attic. He loaded it with a piece of paper and began to type whatever came to mind. When he had finished a few minutes later, he was surprised to be looking at a secret admirer letter to Trunks that was actually quite eloquent. Should he give it to him or just destroy it? Nothing in it seemed to reveal him as the author but he was till not entirely sure it was a good idea. Then again, what would it hurt to just sneak the letter into his locker when he was not looking?
He folded it and placed it in the top drawer of his desk. He would make his decision before Monday; hopefully until then it would be out of sight and out of mind. Unfortunately that was not the case; he turned away from the desk and climbed into bed. Maybe if he took a nap it would take his mind off of it?
When Monday came, Goten was more than ready to get rid of the letter one way or another. It had been drawing his attention like the telltale heart all weekend and if he were any more susceptible to insanity he would have been committed by now. He watched Trunks get his books from his locker and leave for his class. Then he walked over and slipped the folded letter in through the slits in the locker door. He looked around and did not seem to see anyone watching him. Now there was no way to take it back, what was done was done. He would just have to wait and see how Trunks reacted when he found it.
Trunks apologized to him while they were in their second period class and they passed notes back and forth while the teacher prattled on about history. After the next class they headed for lunch and he began to feel nervous. He saw Trunks stop at his locker but instead of waiting for him, he made his excuses and headed on to the cafeteria.
He was already eating when Trunks sat down with his tray and he could see the letter in his hand. He could also feel himself beginning to sweat. Trunks looked at him and he could see the bright smile on his face. "You won't believe what happened, Goten," he stated. "I found this letter in my locker on my way to lunch. It looks like a love note or something. Why don't you read it to me and we will have a good laugh."
Goten felt a large lump forming in his throat. He took the letter and opened it prepared to read the words he had typed out only a few days before.
The Letter
Dear Trunks,
I am writing you this letter because I can not hold my feelings inside any longer. You are the smartest, sexiest, and coolest person I have ever known. I watched you go through girls like they are disposable and I hope that someday you will find the person you really love, even if it is not me.
I know that this is all probably sounding very strange but I just needed you to hear it because I think I am in love with you. I look at your fascinating blue eyes and I want you to hold me forever and give me the sweetest kisses. I want to be your partner, your soul mate, your lover.
I will only give you one clue to my identity. I am and always will be just over your shoulder waiting for you to love me.
Love Always,
Your Secret Admirer
When he finished reading the letter, he refolded it and passed it back over to him. Then he resumed eating and looking over his notes for the next class. "Do you have any idea who wrote it?" Trunks asked.
"Of course not," he replied. "Why would I have any idea who wrote it? Do you have any idea who wrote it?"
"Not really," Trunks commented. "I would really like to know though, she seems like she would be the perfect girlfriend for me." Goten bit his tongue to keep from correcting him and saying, `he'. Then again maybe it would not be so bad to tell him the truth next time they were alone. That would definitely be putting all of his cards on the table.
Trunks opened the letter and reread it over and over again as he ate. When he noticed that Goten was not talking to him at all he looked at him over the edge of the letter and just watched him covertly for a few minutes. If he could not have Goten, this secret admirer would probably be a close second.
