Chapter 3: Dates of Disaster (Part One)
It had been two weeks since Goten had slipped his secret admirer letter into Trunks' locker, and he was becoming more and more nervous about it as time went by. Not only was he worried about Trunks finding out that he was the author, but there was also the chance that the whole school could find out about it as well. Unlike him, Trunks was happy and excited about the letter. He was also very eager to figure out who wrote it.
There was also the situation with the Julie girl that would not give up on Trunks. It had gotten to the point where she followed them morning, noon, and night. He was also frustrated by the fact that Trunks was not sating a word to her about how she was acting. If he took the chance and said something, would Trunks simply blow him off again?
He was lost in his thoughts one afternoon after school had let out, when his eyes shot up and he saw Trunks and Julie leaving school together. Then he felt a pat on his back and turned around to see the football captain standing behind him. “Come on, Goten. Practice is getting started and you don't want to be late.”
“Sorry,” Goten replied. “I guess I was just distracted.”
“Having problems with your friend Trunks again?” he asked. Goten could feel himself blushing as he nodded. Should he be embarrassed by the fact that someone who barely knew him could so easily guess the source of his distraction? He heard his sigh and then he felt him sit down beside him. “I'm not sure what I can do to help,” he commented. “But, if you're going to be too sidetracked to stay and practice, maybe you should go home.”
“No,” Goten replied. “I'll be fine, just give me a few minutes and I will head over to the practice filed.”
“That's the spirit, I bet the work out will do you good,” he commented. Then he stood up and walked away. Now that he was gone, Goten reflected on what he had said. Maybe it would have just been wiser to take him up on his offer and go home. Besides, practice would actually be more likely to frustrate him because he would be controlling most of his power.
He looked up to see Trunks waving at him as he drove off with Julie in his car and caused Goten to practically see red. Without waving back at him he stood and turned to walk to the practice filed. This was getting ridiculous, he had thought that letter would relieve some of his stress but now he was even more confused and frustrated. There was a pressing urge within him to do something else but he was not sure what his next action should be. Even if he did have an idea, was there any guarantee it would be a good idea?
When he got to practice, he somehow managed to put al his thoughts aside and focus on controlling his power. When he went to leave he saw Trunks was standing by his car waiting for him. “What are you doing?” he asked.
“I came to pick you up,” Trunks replied. “You seemed kind of distracted when I left earlier.”
“I was not distracted,” Goten replied in frustration. “Besides, you did not have to come back and pick me up; I am a big boy and can make it home on my own.”
“What's your problem?” Trunks asked. “I was just trying to be nice.” Then he stopped and with a sigh ran his fingers through his hair. “I really need someone to talk to right now,” he mumbled. Then he looked up into Goten's eyes and he was surprised by the confused and somewhat sad gaze that was there staring back at him.
Goten's shoulders slumped and he approached Trunks. “I'm sorry I snapped at you,” he said softly. Then he wrapped his arm around Trunks' shoulder and they leaned back against the car. Trunks smiled at him and then without warning had wrapped him in a hug.
“Why do you put up with me?” Trunks asked with a laugh.
Because I love you, was on the tip of his tongue, but he managed to push it back and said, instead, “Same reason you put up with me,”
“Somehow, I doubt that,” Trunks mumbled quietly with the humor now gone from his voice. Before Goten could question the comment, Trunks had broken their embrace and started to walk around to the other side of the car. He quickly took the passenger seat and began to wonder if Bulma was right to worry about Trunks.
“So, what do you want to talk about?” Goten asked.
“Julie told me that she wrote the secret admirer letter,” he replied.
“What?!” exclaimed Goten.
“Yeah, I was shocked too,” trunks replied. “I'm not sure why but the whole thing just does not seem real. I was not really sure what to do when she told me that.” Goten felt compelled to say something, anything. This was the best time to fess up that he had wrote the letter if he was ever going to do it, or he could take the coward's way out and let Julie take the credit for everything. What's the worst thing that could happen by him keeping his mouth shut? If Trunks thought Julie had written the letter his excitement would most likely turn into paranoia about her level of insanity and would distance himself from her, no harm done there.
“What did you do?” he asked finally.
“I asked her out,” Trunks replied. “We are going to dinner at a nice restaurant on Saturday and I am really excited. If she is my secret admirer we could make a good couple.” Goten had to quickly bite his tongue to keep from blurting out that Trunks was losing his mind. This was not working out at all like he had planned or hoped that it would. He looked away and watched through the window as scenery flew by faster and faster. He started to feel slightly dizzy so he laid his head back against the car seat. “You aren't saying anything,” Trunks commented. “Come on, I want your opinion on all of this.”
“I'm not quite sure what to say about it,” Goten replied. “If you think that the two of you will be good together then go for it.” He looked forward and saw his house in the distance. He did not think he had ever been this happy to see his house before in his life. As the car stopped in front of the house, Goten quickly hopped without even saying goodbye, Trunks looked as if he wanted to say something else but instead he simply waved goodbye and drove off. Goten was thankful that Trunks had remained silent as he quickly walked past his parents in the living room and went up to his room to think over everything that had happened.
The week went by rather quickly and Goten was inwardly appreciative that Trunks did not mention his upcoming date with Julie, and he did nothing to bring it up or make it a topic to be discussed. Though as time passed he was not sure whether he was relieved or even more frustrated by the lack of discussion between them. Then he thought to himself why Trunks would not be mentioning the date? Was there a chance it had been cancelled and he was too embarrassed to talk about it?
On Saturday, he decided to call Trunks and find out for sure what was going on.
“Moshi, Moshi,” Trunks answered.
“Hi Trunks,” he said cheerfully. “It's me Goten, I was just wondering if you were busy tonight because there are some really good movies opening this weekend.”
“Sorry,” Trunks replied. “I have that date with Julie tonight. Don't you remember? Then again maybe we could go see a movie together tomorrow okay?”
“Yeah sure,” Goten said softly, not even caring that all of the cheerfulness had obviously slipped from his voice. “It must have just slipped my mind,” he continued. “Well, I will call you again tomorrow and we will go from there.”
“Sounds good,” Trunks commented. “I'll talk to you later, bye.” Then he hung up the phone, presumably to get ready for his date. Gotten was so angry it took him a few seconds to realize that he was still listening to the dial tone long after Trunks was gone. He had spent all that time and energy on that letter just to have the bimbo Julie reap all the benefits. He was not going to take it anymore, he decided and within seconds he was dressed and flying off for Capsule Corp to tell Trunks everything.
When he arrived, he decided to land directly onto Trunks' balcony instead of going through the front door, but before his hand could reach for the handle of the sliding glass doors he saw Trunks enter the room and totally lost his nerve. It looked like he had just stepped out of the shower, his hair dripping wet with nothing on but a towel that hung low on his hips. He was entranced by the view and the thought that he was going to get caught staring just kept playing over and over again in his mind. As he saw the slight tilt of Trunks' head his movement was restored and he quickly jumped up onto the roof and out of the sight. He quickly sucked in a few ragged breaths and then focused on controlling his chi so that Trunks would not be able to sense it.
Inside the building, Trunks shook his head and looked towards his balcony again. He must be going crazy; he could have sworn he had seen someone on his balcony just a minute before. Not just someone, he thought. He could have sworn he had seen Goten standing on his balcony. He hurriedly finished dressing and walked out onto his balcony to investigate.
When Goten heard the balcony door open he began to pray with all of his might that he would not be discovered. If he was that would definitely be an interesting conversation to have with Trunks. He waited for about five minutes and then he heard the door open and close again. He breathed a deep sigh of relief and then he lay back against the roof to think. What was he supposed to do now? Then an idea came to him, he would follow Trunks on his date and watch to see how it went. He moved to the other end of the roof so he could see Trunks' car and he waited patiently for him to leave to go pick up Julie.
After he had left, he followed discreetly and kept his power level controlled. He also made sure to fly a few yards behind and high enough to not be seen easily. When he had not been discovered by the time they arrived at the restaurant he was confident he was hiding himself well.
Now, he was outside watching Trunks and Julie have dinner. She was smiling brightly and looking beautiful which only angered him more. He could not really gauge Trunks' responses but he looked just like his usual nonchalant self. If only he could sneak in and hear what they were saying to each other.
Inside the restaurant, Trunks was becoming bored and irritated very quickly. Julie was all smiles and giggling. The bad part about it was that she did not really have anything interesting to say. The more he sat there and thought about it, she just did not much with his image of the person who wrote the secret admirer letter. The one time he alluded to the letter, she dodged the topic and continued prattling on about herself.
When Goten saw them standing, he quickly hid and waited for them to leave. As they got into Trunks' car, he heard Julie say. “I had a really great time tonight. When we get back to my place, would you like to come in?”
“Sure,” Trunks replied. That one word crushed Goten. The date must have gone better than he had thought it would. I guess that left him with no hope to hang onto. He should have given up at that point and just went home, but something kept him from chickening out and doing just that. Instead, he followed them all the way back to Julie's house and watched them go inside. He watched the house until he saw a light come on, on the second floor. Then he moved in for a closer look despite how bad an idea it was.
Through the soft sheer curtains in the window, he saw trunks rolling around with Julie on the bed. His shirt was off and his pants unfastened, while Goten was watching his face felt wet. He reached up with his hand and at that moment realized that he had been crying. Frustrated and upset with himself beyond belief, he could not watch anymore and flew off towards his home.
Inside the house, Trunks was feeling frustrated and upset with himself as well. He was operating on auto pilot as he was kissing Julie but his mind was thinking of everything else but her. There was no gut reaction, no apparent attraction, so why the hell was he doing this? Then she touched him and he remembered that he needed to get laid and get Goten out of his head.
Then he closed his eyes and allowed Julie to have free reign with his body and unconsciously his mind began to drift away. His mind began to imagine that Goten's hands were the ones touching him. The comment that broke through his reverie is when Julie said, “You finally got excited, and I was starting to worry that you wouldn't.”
At that moment, he froze and realized just who he had been thinking of while he was hard. Then he sat up and pushed her away. “I'm sorry,” he mumbled. “Secret admirer or not, I cannot be with you. I want someone else.” Then he fastened his pants and began searching for his shirt.
“You really believed that I wrote that stupid letter?” she asked. “I just used that as an excuse to talk to you. Like, I would do something so pathetic as to write you some sappy letter.”
“No,” he bit out. “You were just pathetic enough to use someone else's declaration of love to further your own petty interests.” Then he grabbed his shirt from the floor and left without even putting it on. As he drove home, he was confused by everything that had happened. If Julie did not write the letter, than who did? Did he really even care anymore? He did not think it was possible at this point to deny his feelings for Goten.
While he was pondering all of this, Goten was sitting at the counter of an all night diner sipping coffee. He had started to head home after seeing Trunks and Julie together but when he had seen the lights of the diner he had stopped and landed for a cup of coffee. Now, he was left just more or less playing with the food that he had ordered instead of eating it.
`Are you okay sugar?” the waitress asked. “You seem kinda down. Would you like to talk about it?”
“I'm fine,” Goten mumbled. Then he looked up and saw that she was smiling at him brightly, maybe even flirtatiously. His first reaction was to brush her off but he stopped himself. Maybe this was just the opportunity he needed to move on and put his feelings for Trunks in his past. “Then again,” he said softly. “Maybe, I could use a little cheering up.” Her smile became accentuated by a slight rosy blush that stained her cheeks.
“You are such a flirt,” she commented. “But, I suppose I could cheer you up, maybe even spend a whole evening together next weekend.” He watched her as she winked and then he smiled.
“It's a date,” he replied. Then she wrote down her telephone number on a napkin and he paid the bill. “I'll call you,” he said as he left. Once outside he sighed and wondered to himself once again whether or not he had made a wise decision.
The next week began at school and Goten was teething at the bit to ask about the date. Every time he allowed a small ray of hope to enter his mind, he pushed it away in frustration. He had a date for himself this weekend; he was not supposed to care anymore. All his plans for giving up on Trunks did just not really seem to work. At lunch he finally caved in and asked, “How was your date with Julie?”
“Horrible,” Trunks replied.
“What?!” Goten exclaimed. “I could have sworn the two of you would hit it off,” he continued at seeing Trunks' shocked response.
Trunks continued to look at him suspiciously for a few more minutes and the he looked away with a sigh. “I tried to make it work,” he commented. “It was all because I thought that she had written the secret admirer letter, but when I told her that despite thinking that I did not want to see her anymore, she told me the truth.” Goten was bursting now with a million questions and confused by Trunks' account of the date, but he could not ask any questions without giving away what he had done.
Instead, he commented, “That's too bad.” Then he saw that Trunks looked genuinely disheartened; he was not blowing this off as quickly as he did everything else. He reached over and put his hand over Trunks' to reassure him. “You'll find someone. A girl would have to be crazy not to fall for you.” Then he noticed that a slight blush was crossing Trunks' features and he quickly pulled away his hand. “Anyway, here is to hoping that my date goes better than yours.” That would probably be a pretty decent change of subject, at least he hoped so.
“You have a date,” Trunks asked.
“Yeah,” Goten replied. “I went to this diner and the waitress was cute so I asked her out.” Damn, he hoped that sounded genuine, that's all he needed was for Trunks to start making fun of him over a date he was not all that excited over anyway.
“Oh, well,” Trunks started. “I hope you have a good time.” Then he got up to dump the contents of his tray. Goten watched him closely and wondered what Trunks' thoughts would be on the second secret admirer letter he had just left before coming into lunch.
