Chapter 6
Written by: Severina

Gohan felt the sand softly scratch his cheek as the wind whistled softly across the barren field. He knew that these two people standing across for him weren't androids. They were Saiyans. He could tell by the tails. A strange feeling of excitement and apprehension welled up in his chest. On one hand there were other Saiyans still alive! But on the other, they could be like Raditz or Turles, or for that matter, Vegeta, out to destroy the planet.

The man looked like his father. Exactly like his father. But so had Turles. But he could feel something flowing from the man, something familiar and deeply hidden. It was calming. He wondered if his own father could feel it. Goku and the other man stared at each other, ignore everyone else on the battlefield. It was as if they were frozen in time. This was not the heated stare of pre-battle. The strange Saiyan remained still, but his eyes held something that Gohan couldn't place.

He glanced at the woman. He'd never seen a Saiyan female before. She was statuesque and commanded respect in the proud way she held herself. She too was familiar. Her face was an unreadable mask, like the man she was standing next to, but her eyes were locked on something behind him. He glanced to see her eyes entangled with Vegeta's, carrying out a similar battle to that his father and the strange man were conducting. Before Gohan could contemplate any further, Krillin's voice broke the glossy silence.

"What do you think Goku?" he muttered under his breath, waiting for his friend's command. It could never be said that Krillin wasn't loyal. Goku didn't answer. He just kept staring at the man in front of him. But Krillin's voice had shaken the woman from her trance, and she looked inquisitively at the two Saiyans.

"Are you the one they call Kakarot?" she asked, her voice eloquent and commanding.

"Yes." Bardock and Patara exchanged glances.

"I am Patara, Queen of Vegetasei. We have come a long way to find you."

"You have come a long way to lie," came a gravel-covered voice from behind Goku. Vegeta was now standing in front of him. "The Queen of Vegetasei is dead. She died with her planet almost thirty years ago. So I suggest you drop the act and tell us the truth before I blast you both into oblivion." As Vegeta was speaking, Bardock knelt in front of him, showing him the proper respect as his Prince. Patara bowed her head in respect before meeting his gaze.

"Prince Vegeta. We did not expect to find you here on this planet. But I can assure you that what I speak is the truth," her voice was soft and almost distant. Looking into her only son's face, she could see that he was truly a man. The scowl was set permanently now, the high cheek bones visible on his face, the angular features that characterized the royal line of his planet was plain on his face. He carried himself according to his status, still holding his head high almost thirty years since the destruction of his planet and annihilation of his kingdom; he was still a prince in every sense of the word.

"Prove it," he growled, narrowing his eyes at her. Patara reached up to the neckline of her bodysuit and pulled out a well-hidden platinum chain. She unfastened the necklace and tossed it in his direction. He caught it without blinking and gazed at the pendant dangling from the end of the chain.

It was the royal crest of Vegetasei. It had been his father's wedding present to his mother, the symbol that she was now a member of the royal family. He remembered that when he was young, and his father wasn't watching, she'd bend to pick him up and the chain would swing out from her collar...he blinked. He tossed it back in her direction, his eyes never changing.

"You may rise solider," Vegeta commanded. Bardock rose to his feet. It was Saiyan custom to bow in the presence of royalty, and stay that way until they granted you recognition. To do otherwise would be and insult to the honor of the royal family. Vegeta watched the man rise, the face so like Kakarot's. His eyes narrowed imperceptibly. He had an idea of who this man could be. But why was he keeping company with royalty?

"My Prince, we didn't realize that you would be here as well. Allow us to explain-" Bardock began, but Vegeta cut him off.

"I do not have time for your explanations. Nor do I care to hear them."

"Prince Vegeta, please. Let me explain. Give me a half an hour. We will leave after that time." Vegeta looked at Patara. It was silent for a long time.

"You have a half an hour. No more," he answered and stalked across the battlefield in the opposite direction.

"Sorry about that," Goku said, smiling broadly now at the two Saiyans. "That's Vegeta for you." The wide grin spreading across Goku's face began to unnerve Patara. It was unheard of for a Saiyan to act this way. "Come on. He's probably heading back to Capsule Corp., we can all go there." He took to the air like a dancer. "Come on!" The rest of the fighters followed suit, leaving two very bewildered Saiyans to stare after them.

"Should we go?" Bardock asked.

"I don't think we have a choice," she answered, taking to the air to follow the ragtag team of fighters. Once they were in the air she spoke to him again. "Major, are you certain that this is correct? Are you sure that contraption of yours worked?"

"To be honest my Queen, I'm no longer sure. The behavior of these creatures is...well...strange. I'm not sure what's going on." She looked at him. They flew the rest of the way in silence.
