Chapter 1

For they shall be Comforted.

"How long has he been like this?" LeShaiyah asked Bulma.

"Too long. He won't eat, he stays locked away in his room during the day and walks the floors all night. He barely even speaks." Tears began to well up in her eyes. "I'm so worried about him. He's been like this ever since… since…"

"Since she died?" Shay finished for her. Bulma didn't want to blurt it out and upset Shay. Although she hadn't known Tristan that long, she would forever be grateful for what she did for Trunks. She would always be an honorary Z fighter in her judgment book.

Bulma didn't quite understand how or why the threat came about, but Tristan gave her own life to save her son. Only now he was heartbroken without her.

"Mrs. Briefs?"

Shay's soft voice drew her out of her thoughts. "Yes, dear?"

"Can I go see him? Maybe I can help."

"Sure. He's upstairs in his room. Just be careful what you say." Bulma warned.

"Thanks. I'll just find it on my own." With that she turned and left, leaving Bulma by the window, still drowned in worry.

Not a moment passes that I don't think about her. Everyday I can feel my mind slip deeper into itself, trying to find out if that was really the only way.

With the ki I had left, I created a ki ball and hurled it toward them. The blast grabbed Kunyasha's attention just long enough for Tristan to kick her between the eyes. She staggered back and the now bloody Tristan put her in a bear hug, locking her fingers around Kunyasha's stomach. After a few seconds, bluish white energy started to swirl around both of their bodies.

"What do you think you're doing?" Kunyasha yelled.

"Something my father taught me before he was killed." She said through clenched teeth.

"No." I whispered. The only thing that she could be doing was a kamikaze. I stood and tried to stop her before she killed herself, but as soon as I came within reaching distance, another force field pushed me back, only this time it was from Tristan. I watched in horror as the growing energy filled the dome shaped force field.

"Tristan, no!" She opened her eyes; tears had made trails down her face.

"I'm sorry, Trunks. This is the only way." Lightning bolts flashed around as the energy level rose higher.

"Didn't you listen? I'm immortal, you can't kill me!" Kunyasha cackled.

"We'll see each other again, ne?" She said, struggling to hold back her energy just enough to say her last words. She finally lost control as energy exploded from her body.

I closed my eyes, trying to block out the painful memories that tortured me night and day. I reopened them and picked up the only picture I had of Tristan. It was from our first date. We went to the carnival, and even though the rides were crappy, we had so much fun together. Our picture was taken by one of those annoying attendants that grab people up, snap their picture, then make them pay for it whether they want the picture or not. Tristan was holding my arm with one hand while holding a giant tiger stuffed animal in the other. I won that tiger for her a few minutes before the picture was taken, after I had to pay the vendor for breaking the `Test Your Strength' machine. The kids in the line behind us oohed and aahed as the metal slider went sailing strait through the bell at the top. Since the thing was broken anyway, I paid for the rest of the stuffed animals and gave them to the kids, gaining the gratitude of their parents, and not to mention the vendor. I felt a small smile start to creep across my lips when a knock at my door interrupted my thoughts.

"Come in." I said. Tristan's best friend, Shay slowly walked into the room, as if it was rigged with booby traps.

"Hi." She said meekly. I only waved in response. "I know you're probably wondering who I am…" She started.

"I know who you are, Shay. Tristan told me a lot about you. So, are you here to take a crack at the `Get Trunks out of his depression' piñata?"

"Everyone's just worried about you."

"I'm fine. Sorry if I sound rude, but I just want to be alone." I got up and walked over to my window.

"You know, you could always try talking about it. There are plenty of people in your life who will listen." She said.

"Like you?"

"Like your mother, or Goten, and yes me."

"I don't want your, or anyone else's pity."

"And you won't get it. At least not from me." She said matter-of-factly, folding her arms. I could see now what Tristan told me about Shay before. She had a lot of spirit and sass, a lot like my mother.

"Trunks, I know what you're going through and…"

I whipped my head around to look at her. "You know what I'm going through?" Anger that I had been trying to hold back started to boil over. "You have no idea of what I'm going through!" I slowly walked toward her. "Do you know what it's like to love someone so much that it hurt, only to have them torn away from you not once, but twice? Do you know what it's like to have her death replayed in your mind day after day, after day? Do you know what it's like to wake up every morning, hoping that she'll come bouncing into your room, but she never does because she's gone?!"

"YES!" Shay yelled. She was in my face now, her chest heaving with anger. "Yes, I know what that feels like. I lost someone like that. And her name was Tristan Akeru. Everyday I hope and pray that I'll come home and find her hiding behind a door, waiting for her to jump out and scare me and tell me that it was all some big ass joke. And everynight I cry because she never does." Tears started to stream down her face. "So don't come at me with that `You don't know what I'm going through' shit because I don't want to hear it!" She turned around and sat on my bed, putting her face in her hands. I was dumbfounded. I got so caught up in my own pain that I never thought that her closest friend would be going through the same thing I was. A pang of regret hit me. I sat down on the bed next to her.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to talk to you that way. It's just that it… well…" I stammered, trying to find the right words.

"It hurts so much that it feels like you're all alone in this?" She said, looking at me.

"Well, yeah. I guess you do know how I feel." I watched as she wiped the tears from her face.

"You're not alone in this, Trunks." She said. She stood and sighed. "I don't want to cause anymore trouble. I know things are hard on you already. I just came to see how you were. She walked to the door and turned around. "We're all still here for you if you ever need someone to talk to." With that, she left, closing the door behind her. Shay definitely knew how to slap some sense into you without lifting a finger.

My cell phone started playing Cha La Head Cha La and the light on the front started flashing. When Goten's name came up on the screen, I snatched the phone off the charger and flipped it open.

"Hello?"

"Trunks! The Dragonballs won't be able to be used for another week, but I do have good news." He said.

"What's that?"

"I just saved a bunch of money on my air car insurance by switching to Kai-Co.!" I sweatdropped at his corny joke, but I couldn't help but laugh with him. That was something I hadn't done in a long time. "But seriously," He continued. "I got your mom to upgrade my Dragon Radar. Now we can see how long it's been since the last time the Dragonballs were used. Pretty sweet, huh?"

Hearing that revived me from my sour mood. I wouldn't be too much longer before I could wish Tristan back. I missed her so much.

"Hello, Chikyuu to Trunks." Goten said.

"Hmm? Oh, gomen ne. What were you saying?"

"I said I have to go. Kaasan wanted me to run an errand for her 10 minutes ago."

"Okay. Let's start packing for our trip tomorrow."

"Why don't we bring Shay? She was Tristan's best friend, after all." He said. I thought about it for a second. Goten was right. It wouldn't be right to leave her out of this.

"Good idea. I'll give her a call tomorrow." I could hear Chi Chi yelling in the background.

"Uh oh! I've been spotted! Gotta go, Trunks! Hey mom! I was just… No, not the frying pan! *clunk* *click*

Poor Goten.
