Chapter One

When are you going to find a mate?!

Cody looked around as he swam to meet his mother by the surface. He couldn't believe it had only been three years since he found out he was a Merman, and when his mother found him again.

`Oh man, I hope she isn't going to ask me what I think she is' Cody mentally groaned.

Sure he was happy to be with his mother again, but damn it for the last two weeks she had been asking when he was going to find a mate and put some buns in his oven.

Oh he was shocked when he heard her first say those words to him one day when they were swimming for fish. Why he could remember it like it was yesterday, well maybe because it was yesterday was one of the reasons he could remember it so well.

~Flashback~

" So Cody when am I going to see little Mergirls, or even if your lucky little Merboys swimming about?"

His mother said in the unique way only Merpeople could, which sounded awfully similar to the way Dolphins communicate.

Cody paused on nibbling the fish he had in his hands and stared at his Mom surprised.

"Uhhhhh, Mom did you hit your head on the coral reef again or did you forget I'm a boy?"

"No, silly I did not hit my head on a reef, and I know you're a boy. I made that positively clear before your foster parents took you when I placed you in a safe place."

"Then why ask such a ridiculous question?" he asked peering at her curious.

"Well don' ya know about mermen and mating? They have the ability to give birth because they're so rare. You will see that once every two thousand years a mermaid will give birth to a merman. If the merman finds a mate they will be very lucky if they manage to birth a male one."

"So your saying that I can make babies?! I can be up the tuff, knocked up, up the duff, got cattle in the pen?!"

"Well when you put like that you make it sound like it's a bad thing," she said defensively "also I kno' you rock the other side of the cradle so this should be a blessing for you. To be able to have children when the landwalkers who are male and their partner can't."

~End Flashback

`Hmph, blessing indeed. Now I have you asking every five minutes when I'm going to go mate hunting. As if I'm going to go any time soon.'

He was brought out of his musings when he felt a sharp pull at his now knee long hair.

"Owww!!" He broke the surface looking at his mum with irritation. "Why did I let you talk me into growing my hair long if all your going to do is pull it to get my attention? Oh yes now I remember. You said I'd look more merman like if I grew it long and braid seashells in it."

"Well it's true you do. Now enough chit-chat, I have something important I have to tell you." She replied her face going serious from her normally cheerful one.

"I haven't told you yet, but since you are now of age you are ready to know. When you reach an age, sixteen for example, you will be able to walk on land with landwalker leg for two weeks. If you don't find water between the two weeks and spend at least two hours as a merman then you will die of dehydration."

Cody looked at his mum shocked. "Is that how you met father? Why are telling me this?"

His mum closed her eyes and nodded her head. "Yes it is and I'm telling you this because I have come to an important decision." She braced herself for the outburst that was sure to follow her next statement.

"I want you to go to that island, where I'm sure are some people, and find a mate."

After a few seconds of shocked silence, "WHAT?! Is that the reason you picked this area to talk to me, because of that island some 100 miles away!!??! I thought I told you I'm to young to have children. For Hera's sake I'm only sixteen years old!!"

Sierina quickly waved her webbed hands. " No, nonono. You got me all wrong I want you to go out there and fall in love. When you fall in love you can tell the landealker the truth or not it's up to you, but when you do find a mate come back and wait for when you think your ready to have wee little merpeople. When you know your ready go back and have lots of little ones so I can spoil them when I come and visit. I'm not growing any younger ya kno'."

Cody sighed, "Mum your hardly even aging as fast as landwalkers do, but I'll do it. I always missed the feeling of sand between your toes."

Sierina beamed at him happily, "I knew you'd do it. Come on lets go get ready for the long journey a head of you."

Both mermaid and merman turned and dived with their tails in the air for a couple of seconds. To bad they didn't see the teenaged boy on a yellow cloud blinking and scratching his head, thinking he was sure he'd seen people in the water with fish tails? Then he shrugged it off and continued on to the little island just up ahead.

A/N: Well that was just the first chapter and if you all think it's good enough I'll start writing chapter two. It's just an idea I had ever since I watched the movie on the Disney Channel on Friday and couldn't get it out of my head. Please Read and Review
