Chapter 37

Bra ran out, into the living room, panic was etched on all her features "Damn it all to hell! Where is he?"

She looked at the group of people who stared back at her with ranging expressions of concern. Trunks sat holding Pan on the couch. While Aiko sat across from then, her huge blue eyes pinned on the plate of cookies her grandmother held before her.

"If you are talking about Mark, I have not seen him all day, baby." Bulma walked in and set the plate of cookies near a ravenous Aiko. Staring at the child as she pilled about five cookies in her moth and reached for another handful. Bulma wondered, to herself, when she had become her mother reincarnate? This constant cooking and baking had to stop! With a slight clank, she tossed the tray to the table.

Bra looked over at Trunks and Pan, who sat next to each other. Trunks looked away from Bra, and Pan noticed it. "Trunks?" She sat back from him. Giving him a sharp cutting look. “Now is not the time to be playing games."

Trunks looked down and shook his head. "No it isn't. Bra, I suggest you go talk to father."

Bra turned and fled the room, all sorts of wild ideas flying through her head. Was it possible Vegeta had decided to spar with Mark on his own? No. That could not be it. Mark was not that stupid. No amount of taunting would have gotten Mark to face off against the older man. It had to be something else. What ever it was, it could be nothing but bad. Why else would Trunks leave it to Vegeta to tell her? She almost fell in the hall as she tried to stop. She had been running so fast her hair was flying forward into her face. She stared at her father standing in his Saiyan armor. He stood with his back to the gravity room door. He was obviously waiting for her. Bra walked forward slowly as the anticipation of his words rolled in the pit of her stomach. This was a new one on her. Never had he bothered to wait, outside, his beloved gravity room for her.

"Father." Bra stopped a distance from him and waited for him to acknowledge her. She was not fool enough to think he did not already know she was there. He could sense her ki coming a hundred, perhaps even a thousand miles off.

Vegeta never looked up at his blue haired daughter. "Your mate has informed me of his intent to return to his America. He has business to attend to there."

"He... He..." Bra stammered, as Vegeta turned from her. "Why didn't you stop him?"

Vegeta shrugged "I thought about it, and he does have his reasons."

Bra stammered for a second more "His reasons... You thought, he had… HIS REASONS!?!” She exploded inside with annoyance. “Do you have any idea what they are going to do to him when he sets a foot on American soil?”

Vegeta chuckled a bit "Well, if the Americans are smart they will leave him well enough alone." Vegeta pushed away from the wall and opened the gravity room door. "If they do not then, we will just have to see how powerful a man your mate really is."

”You don't understand!” Bra rushed after her father in sheer frustration. "This is not a game!"

Vegeta swung around to face Bra. He was tried of her second-guessing his decision to allow Devero to depart. "Life is a game, Bra. There are winners and there are losers." He frowned not liking the look of panic on his daughters face. "Give him a few days. He will be back."

The door slid shut in from of Bra and he was gone. It was clear that this subject was mute. She marched back down the hall. "May be they should lock him up, and maybe they will take my father with him!"

Melody looked over at her father, as she stepped off the plane. He had been in a somber mood the entire trip. This melancholy tone had to stop some time. She was starting to worry more and more about him. The darkness was starting to over shadow her life. Something deeper was going on. There was only on thing she could think of to get this over with. Set up a meeting up between Gina and Jonathan. The very though alone made Melody flinch. They had never even spoken to each other in Melody's entire memory. This could be tricky, and even if they met it would d not mean that this secret would come out.

Jonathan looked at Melody "What are you so silent about? Are you all right?"

"I could say the same to you?" Melody walked at his side. "You have not said, but three words since you came to pick us all up. I would like you to tell me what it is about mark Devero that clams you up."

"He looks like his father." Jonathan offered with a shrug. "We never got alone that well. You can blame that one on me."

Melody let out a little gasp "But Dad? That is not like you at all." You are a very likable guy. Everyone I know thinks you are fantastic."

Jonathan swung his bag over his shoulder and stopped walking. "Mel, you are going to hear this some where else someday. So the best thing for me to do is tell you." Melody braced herself. Maybe should would not have to set that meeting up after all. "Thomas Devero and I hardly ever had any real dealing apart from employer and employee. That was until he got married to your mother. It was shortly after that I meet Gina. She was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. She was like a butterfly. She is so tiny and delicate. I was not the only man to admire and envy Devero over her. But I was young and foolish. I tried to keep away from her and not see her. Eventually we did become friends, she never knew the depth of my feeling for her. Gina was far to enraptured with Thomas to see any one or anything else," Jonathan Sander spoke with great pain in his voice. It was clear that he was still suffering over the events that had occurred. "I had al but given up when Gina came to me."

"Come to you?" Melody had wide eyes. "You mean you and Mom became lovers before Thomas Devero died?"

Jonathan shook his head. "No, that happen much later after his death. No, Gina came to me to talk about Thomas and..." Jonathan gritted his teeth "and his affair."

"Thomas Devero was having an affair?" Melody could tell her father wanted to drop the subject. It was just to shocking to find out that her beauty queen mother, the image of perfection, behind closed doors a cheated on by her idolized Thomas! Melody looked up at Jonathan. "Since we are in California can we drop by her house? I want to see her."
Jonathan looked over at Melody "I will do anything for you Mel, you know that."

Mark burst through the doors. Gina jumped up and spun around. "M... M.. Mark what are you doing here?"

Mark walked over to Gina's bar and took the scotch out. "I have come to settle thing between us." He hefted the gals to his lip and drank.

Gina stepped farther away from her son. "Settle things?" She glanced at the phone on the desk. "Mark, You are not well. All the doctors have been doing is trying to help you. If you would just listen to me, we can try to get all this taken care of."

Mark set the glass down not bothering to look at Gina. He knew she was after the phone, to alert the police to his presence, no doubt. "Mom, all I want to know is what you want? I will give you just about anything you want to get you to back off. All I want is a nice quite life with the woman I love."

Gina's tone was so heated and enraged Marks head shot up. "Love? LOVE!? You're a Devero! You don't know the first thing about real love."

Mark looked over at his mother who came toward him with a steady step. "I do love Bra, mother. I will be marrying her soon."

"Excuse me for cutting into all your plans" Gina leveled the gun at Mark's chest. She made sure to stay far enough away from him that he could not move toward her without her noticing. "But she will thank me in the end. A Devero Male is a very desirable thing in a lot of ways. There is only one draw back as far as I can tell. They never love you back, and cannot stay loyal. Not even..." Gina choked "Not even if their life depended on it. I made a mistake, giving Thomas a son. I plan to rectify that mistake, immediately.”
