Chapter 38

Mark stepped back as Gina cocked the gun. "I would not move any further unless you want to die sooner." There was a tremble in her voice as she tried to gather the nerve to follow through with this course of action.

Mark set the glass in his hand down on the table slowly as not to startle her. The deep green eyes of the son never leaving his mother's matching ones. "Mom." That was about as far as he got.

Gina squeezed her eye shut and screamed. "Don't call me that! I may have given birth to you, but I never wanted to be your mother!" She opened her eyes and said with deadly calm. "I never wanted you."

Mark gritted his teeth. He knew this to be true just as he knew he was staring death in the face. Handling and negating ki was one thing, stopping a bullet was another. Mark knew full well this was not in his abilities folder.

It did not matter to him at that moment as he narrowed his eyes on her. "You evil bitch, I think, you have already made that abundantly clear to me while I was growing up." Then with more heat in his voice, he tossed out "Why do you think I have avoided you for so many years."

"I had almost forgotten about you." Gina snorted in disdain. "If I had not gotten sick, if the operation were not to tricky, I would have never came to you for help. I had Melody. She is all I needed."

"At least you finally care about someone else other then yourself." Mark relaxed and stared at the gun.

Gina pressed her finger on the trigger "She is the reason why I have to do this. With you, out of the way I can set her up for the rest of her life. She will be rich enough that she wont have to marry some cheating bastard to attain a decent life for her self."

Like you had to. Mark shook his head as he thought the words, but refused to say them. He had heard it said once, that children were nothing but pawns in their parent's lives. Now he was realizing just how true that was. He took his last moments to wonder what would have happened if that plane had not gone down twenty years ago. Would he instead be standing with his father now? Perhaps hating Thomas Devero for what he had put Gina through? Would he have accepted the inevitable break up? That world was never going to be known. Whatever would have happened never did.

There was only he and his mother, and she claimed she was going to put an end to even that. Swallowing hard he lifted his chin and faced the end with Devero courage, just as he had been raised to do.

The door flew open "Mom!! It's me. I can here to..." Melody stopped as she looked up from pulling her keys out of the lock and her eyes focused on the scene before her.

Gina stood in her pale blue suit holding the black gun at Mark's chest. Mark stared back at their mother with a calm that was almost inhuman. There was no fear in his stance as he faced that black luster gun in the trembling hand. Melody stood with shock on her face. There was no screaming here. No struggle for life. Perhaps they were both, in fact, insane. She hardly felt her father grabbing her shoulders and blocking her from the others.

Jonathan stepped in front of Melody in one fluid motion. He had no idea what was going on here, but Melody was not going to be a casualty of it. "GINA!" Jonathan cried out in horror. "What do you think you are doing!?"

Gina shifted on her feet her eyes finally darting from Jonathan for a brief moment before returning to Mark. "What are you doing here?" Gina's face was suddenly pale as she noticed Melody standing with her hands on her father's shoulders and her face peeping out from behind his strong back. "This is none of your concern, Jon." Gina snapped. Looking back at Mark. "Get Melody out of here."

Mark took the opportunity to pressing a new strategy "What? I thought you were doing this for her." Mark spoke up in a somewhat bored tone. It was not how he was feeling his heart was thundering in his chest as he plotted. This one his best shot at staying alive. As he thought about that Bra's face flashed before him. He wanted to see her in her wedding dress, be the man to hold her hand while she struggled in labor delivering their children. To be there when those children left to find lives of their own, and comfort her through it. He had to live. This had to work. "After all you are such a thoughtful mother planning for her future with my blood, my life. She should at least know what you are sacrificing for her."

"For ... for me?" Melody's eyes grew wide "Mother! No, I never wanted..."

”Shut up Melody! You don't understand. You are to kind hearted to ever understand!” Gina broke her attention of her daughter and focused it to her son. She spoke with ice dripping off her every word "Believe me, he is a Devero by blood, it is no sacrifice."

Melody made a dash to push around her father, but Jonathan held her back. "You may not think that now, Gina." Jonathan stepped farther into the room. "But taking a life is not something you want to do."

"You would know nothing about it." Gina snapped her eyes remaining glued to Mark's.

Jonathan's shoulder sagged and he walked toward Gina with a steady step "Yes I would." He felt his voice crack before he felt the tears. "You see, Gina, I am the one who killed Thomas," The entire room focused on him in that moment. All were in forms of denial and disbelief. "I sabotaged his plane personally."

"But... But why?" Mark forgot his plight in that moment. Pain was ripping at his gut as he glared at the man that had murdered his father all those years ago and destroyed his world.

"I did it for you, Gina." Jonathan motioned for Melody to get closer to Mark. No one else saw the slight flinch of Jonathan's hand, but Melody. She slipped a few inches closer to bar that Mark was standing near. Gina stared in stunned fascination as Jonathan spoke the words that he had kept buried deep in his soul, for the last twenty years. "After you told me, he was cheating, I was furious. He did not deserve you. I thought if I got rid of him you would forget." He looked at the woman he had loved for so long. For the first time ever her eyes were entirely on him, and it was a scary feeling "I knew you would come to me, because I would make sure I was there for you. It took years before it happened, but it did."

"You killed Thomas, because of the affair?" Gina was still stumbling on that thought. Jonathan was the kindest gentlest man she had ever met. He had been her rock in the storm of life. To find out he was not what she thought he as crumbled the fibers of her final belief in men. She was trembling so hard the gun rattled in her hand.

"Yes, but after Melody was born I realized that you still grieve for Thomas. You still love him, just as much as you hate him, Gina." Jonathan shook his head sadly. "You will never lose the pain he gave you. I will never lose the guilt he gave to me. Killing him was the worst thing I have ever done. It has eaten a hole into my soul, Gina." Jonathan's eyes flashed to the gun "Please, Let me spare you that pain." He reached out his hand. "Give me the gun, Gina. Before you do something we will all regret."

"NOOOOO!!" Gina shrieked. She would not be swayed. Nothing was going to stop her of achieving her goal. She turned and with on swift motion to aim the gun squarely at Mark and started to pull the trigger.

Mark gasped at the suddenness of the events. Jonathan rushed Gina. Melody grabbed Mark's arm and pulled him away. The momentum of her movements swung her small frame around, as Mark hit the floor he heard the shouting everywhere all at once. He sat up slowly as the silence came.

He looked to Gina holding the gun at her side. Jonathan was next to her staring at him. It took Mark a moment to realize he was not injured. The he realized they were not looking at him. He turned and the blood rushed from his face.
Melody Sanders lay on her side, her golden blonde hair blocking her face. The slender arms were limp cradling her chest. The ground beside her was beginning to be pooled in blood. Mark moved fast, crawling over to her. He rolled his sister over in his arms and the golden waves slipped back revealing her unconscious features. Melody's shirt was covered in dark crimson as her life's blood continued to drip to the floor.

"Damn, Melody." Mark ripped off her shirt and wadded it up, pressing on the wound. Looking up he saw Jonathan and Gina staring at the action in front of them with out moving. "For Sweet Dende's sake!!! Call 911!" Mark shouted. He prayed that they would snap from their frozen state.

Jonathan ran from the room in response to Mark's words, but Gina felt to her knees. She covered her face with her hands, the gun still locked in her grip. The sound of her sobbing was the only sound echoing within the house, as mark waited for help to arrive.

Then Gina wailed out in torment. "I KILLED HER!!" She moved her hands from her wide eyes. Tears streamed down her face in streams.

Mark shook his head looking up. "Shut up! She is NOT dead!"

"I KILLED MY BABY!" Gina ran her hand through her hair, as more ragged sobs rent the air.

"Damn it to hell!" Mark pressed on the wound. Digging in his pocket for the senzu beans, he carried. "SHE IS NOT DEAD! I wont let her die!"

He heard the click of the gun and froze. Swallowing hard he looked up "Mom?"

The gun was aimed right at him again. Mark blinked. Did she ever give up?

Even as that thought pass through his head, Gina raised the gun to her head. Mark could not believe what he was seeing. It took to much time for him to contemplate her action before she shot. The violent vision before him turned his stomach, and Mark bent over Melody's body trying to breath. He knew what he had just witnessed. There was no force on earth that could help Gina Devero now.

Mark tried to regain his thoughts. He had to get the bean to Melody before it was to late. He fumbled weakly in his pocket again trying to will away the tears. He would not cry for Gina. He told himself. She was not a real mother any way. He tried to tell him self but deep in his heart the answer came to him. That he was truly alone now. His mother, his last surviving parent was gone. The loud wailing was driving him in sane. As hard as he tried to will it away it was paralyzing his movements. He could not see past the tears in his eyes as his hand gripped the sense bean in his hand. It was then a hand touched his shoulder and he realized he was no longer alone at Melody's side. He looked up to see the paramedics working on Melody as one pulled him away

"Good job Mr. Devero." Someone said through the haze in his head "You stopped the bleeding enough to keep her alive."

The paramedic led Mark carefully out the door toward one of the ambulances. Mark just followed in a daze. He was still trying to come to terms with all that had just happened to him. "Mr. Devero did you see what happened?"

Mark stammered on his words. "It all happened so fast. It was just starting and then it was over."

The other man nodded and helped Mark into the van. It was best just to let Mark Devero alone. After all everyone already knew he was insane. It was on at the radio and TV stations. It was just a shame no one had been able to stop him, before any one else had been hurt.
