Goku was sitting atop the same spot he had been sitting on for the last couple of months. That's what his routine had become ever since that fateful day in New Planet Vegeta. He had been alarmed to know after his session in the regenerating tank had ended, that Vegeta had not returned home.
He had immediately gone in search of him and had felt relief when he had found him in that special spot Vegeta had made his own.
It was the highest Mountain peak in all of Japan and Vegeta always went there whenever he felt like meditating. He would go there whenever he felt restless and lost, even though he would never admit to such feelings to anyone, but Goku knew, he understood him better than Vegeta could ever imagine.
At first Goku had tried to comfort him, but his efforts had been rejected and mocked. He had tried to convince him to go back home, but Vegeta had only ignored him.
And so he had given up and resigned himself to watch him all day long, to do nothing but observe the still silhouette of the mighty Prince.
Sometimes Vegeta would just stare at the sky all day long. Signs of emotion eluded the Prince's facial features, but Goku could feel his restlessness.
Other times Vegeta would rave like a mad dog. He would scream and growl his rage, he would blast the rocky mountain peaks around him and he would curse at the sky, to soon fall in that state of inertia again. Standing there like a statue, looking up at the sky.
"..I wish I could help you"
Goku's sadness could be seen in his beautiful dark eyes, he felt sadness for them all, but most especially for his Prince.
Every time Vegeta stared at the sky he would be torturing himself with the sweet agony of his memories, tormented by the echoes of the past...
....................................
"Are you a dwarf..."
"I'm three years old, for your information I'm a genius!"
"I'll try to speak dumb I promise!"
The bittersweet memories brought some sort of peace, but a feeling that wouldn't last as soon as he remembered that she was no more...
It had been so clear to him, her crestfallen look as she told him why no one would play with her...
"They say I'm a freak"
"I don't think you're a freak brat...ugly yes, with that rainbow hair, but definitely not a freak"
How could he have ever thought her anything but beautiful....
And that fateful day when he had said good bye...
"Don't tell me rainbow head that you are going to cry"
"Of course I won't cry, how absurd, Saiyans don't cry!
She had said so proudly as her tears had fallen...
And finally the day, when he had failed her, it seemed as if he had always failed her...
"I am so proud of you it hurts......my love for you is endless...."
Goku was awakened by a thunderous sound, but soon realized its cause. Vegeta had been gripped once again by the raving madness. This time he wasn't holding back as his lethal blasts destroyed everything that surrounded them. Goku had had enough....
In the blink of an eye he was facing Vegeta and without hesitation released a mighty blow that surprised the Saiyan Prince costing him his balance.
"Fool! So you wish to challenge me!!"
Vegeta was spitting rage as he confronted Goku..
"The last thing in my mind right now is to spar with you Vegeta"
"Then Leave me ALONE!!!!"
"I won't leave you alone, not anymore. Look at yourself for crying out loud! You've been here far too long, you are driving yourself insane Vegeta!"
"And what if I am? It's my concern not yours, what do you care Kakarrot! Let me be!"
"I DO care...and a lot. How can you ask me that?"
"Hmmph!"
Was all Vegeta said and he turned his back on Goku. It was obvious he was going to play his little ignoring technique on him again.
"Oh no you don't!"
Goku warned him, facing him every time Vegeta looked away.
"After all this years you cannot deny we've become close. You may refuse to admit it even to yourself, but I know you care for me as I care for you. Otherwise, you would have insisted in your quest to kill me, you wouldn't have come to my help every time I've needed you, because you HAVE saved me many times Vegeta. I can always count on you to save me from a certain death. Care you to explain that?"
"Imbecile! The only reason I saved your worthless ass time and time again was because I wouldn't allow no one to deprive me of the right to kill you. I would be the one to finish you off. I, and no one else. Destiny has reserved that right to me"
"That's what you always say, but not even you believe that cheap excuse any more" "Why are you so stubborn? Why can't you accept my friendship and my love?"
"Don't be ridiculous! I have no need of friends! And I most definitely would never lower myself to feel such mediocre and useless emotions"
"Then why haven't you come back home? Why have you been here acting like a mad man for two whole months! You're hurting I know Vegeta, you can deny it as much as you want, but I know. I mourned her as well, I loved her too you know. No, don't look at me like that, not like you're thinking, I loved her like the sister I never had. Just like My children loved her, and Trunks as well, we all did, YOU did..."
"Don't look away Vegeta, accept it man! The reason you're still here acting like a lunatic is because you haven't vented the pain that is clogging your sanity. You have to express what you feel; otherwise it will drive you insane. You may feel guilty for what happened, but there was nothing you could do. She made her own choices; she accepted the responsibility since a young age. Her priority was to protect us all, especially you. She would have gone anyway Vegeta, it wasn't your fault."
"I should have been there to protect her. She had suffered so much because of me..."
"Not because of you. You didn't destroy our planet, Frieza did!"
"She spent all her life in loneliness, never giving up, looking for me and when she found me, she found nothing for I could offer her nothing..."
"How could you have known Vegeta? It was out of your hands. And you're wrong, she found us all, and I know that made her very happy"
"She deserved so much more Kakarrot. She was born for greatness and because of me she found nothing but emptiness and darkness"
"That's not true Vegeta. I know that the little time she spent with us brought her such joy. If given the chance, I know Fhazha would choose to do it all over again. That is just who she was."
"I should have taken her away with me, far from here the moment she found us"
"Yet you didn't, and she didn't ask you to either"
"Vegeta, I understand you more than you can imagine. Your pain is my pain, for I am not afraid to admit how much I care for you. You have become such an integral part of my life. Without you I would have never known my heritage and who I really was. I shall forever be grateful to you for that. Is true that at one time I considered you my enemy, but that is not so anymore, for a very long time now it hasn't been so. I learned to admire you, to admire your sharpness, your regal aura, the confidence that radiates from you, the lack of fear in your eyes and even your ruthlessness. I am so proud of you that at times I don't feel worthy to be near you, next to my prince I feel like nothing but an ignorant fool..."
"Don't be absurd Kakarrot, are you mocking me? We both know who is the stronger of the two, you have been able to surpass me in every single opportunity we've had, that is why I hated you for so long, defeating you became my one obsession in life"
"But then it changed right? When we defeated Buu.."
"I realized what a fool I had been and I only admitted the obvious"
"No Vegeta, the truth is that you are just as strong as I am, or at least you can be. Fhazha knew it, we all have the potential inside of us, we just need to know how to tap into it"
" Yes, that's what my brat told me as well, before she..."
"You have to let her go! She wouldn't want to see you like this. Didn't she ask us to take care of the children, her chibis? Yet you are neglecting your son as you waste your time wallowing in this misplaced guilt and I neglect mine because I'm here watching how you kick your own ass every day."
"Trunks...
"...And Bulma..."
At the mention of his mate Vegeta looked away, the shame was clear in his eyes.
"She misses you Vegeta, she may not say so, but I know. Let go of the past and accept the present, what you have, for you are blessed with a son that any man or Saiyan would be more than proud of and a beautiful and honest woman that loves you very much."
"She does not want me back, I have hurt her too much with my callousness"
"Why don't you try? You have nothing to lose"
"My pride, I refuse to subject myself to her rejection Kakarrot"
"So you rather lose your family?
"She won't have me back"
"How do you know?"
"She's as proud as I am, that's one of the things I admire about her. Her imperious nature rivals my own."
"Come on! Are you saying you're scared of Bulma!"
"Of course not idiot! I fear nothing!"
"Then? What are you waiting for?"
"So stubborn as always. I'm not telling you to forget her Vegeta, but accept what has happened. You can always keep Fhazha in your heart, for no one can take her memory from you; there she shall always live, as she does in mine. But you must also take care of the loved ones that are still here. They deserve your protection and your love; must you deny them that? Must they suffer as well? I think that that type of attitude is even too selfish for you. Besides....
... I'm starving Vegeta! I don't think I can stand being scooped up here without proper nourishment, are you willing to have that in your guilty bag as well? That I starve to death because you refused to come home?"
Goku's serious look on his faceafter he had uttered the most idiotic nonsense Vegeta had ever heard made it a little bit hard to keep his face straight. Starve to death indeed!
Vegetas was very sure that if necessary, rocks would be very edible for Kakarrot.
But Kakarrot had a point. He had to let go. He had been wallowing in an abyss of painful loss and guilt for far too long. All the should've or could've in the world wouldn't bring her back. And he had to think of his family as well. He had not forgotten Bulma's last words that day in the gravity room, she had told him not to come back and perhaps that was also one of the reasons why he had not returned. He was afraid of her rejection, yet he would never admit to it, it was something hidden at the farthest point of his consciousness. Yet he had to admit he missed her, he missed losing himself in her softness, he missed being annoyed by her constant chatter...and most of all, he missed his son. Perhaps Kakarrot had a point, and it was time to let go. And so he turned around and feigning nonchalance he told Goku..
"I shudder to think what that "Thing" you call wife would do if something were to happen to you because of me Kakarrot. Perhaps we should return, I would hate to blast her into a million pieces of she were to attack me with her insolence and her screeches"
"See, that's what I call being practical. Why risk Chi Chi's wrath?"
And with that said, they both ascended to the skies, but before taking full flight in direction of their home, Vegeta turned around and for a last time, said fare well to his past, to her...
"My love for you is endless..."
He heard her voice in the deepest recess of his soul...
"And so is mine for you little brat, so is mine"
With a heaviness of heart Vegeta made that silent pledge, wishing she could hear him say what he never had the guts to say when he had the chance. Their love forever lost in the mists of unfulfillment.
With that final message both Goku and Vegeta were on their way home.
He had immediately gone in search of him and had felt relief when he had found him in that special spot Vegeta had made his own.
