Of Conversations and Portals

Leeli pressed her hand against her forehead. When Leela came though the portal she brought a few blessed pieces of information. First that Goten had gone somewhat mad after her disappearance and reached a new level of super-saiya-jin and destroyed Kull. The second had been that Goten was very good with his children.

"It'd been five years," Leeli mumbled, wrapping her arms around her waist and leaning over, "I really didn't expect him to wait anyway."

"Five years since when? Who's waiting? Where have all the flowers gone?"

Leeli jumped to her feet and twisted around to face the voice that had come from behind her, in her hand she powered up an energy blast. Upon seeing who it was she let the energy fade and placed her hands on her hips in mild annoyance. "Tsuko," she sighed, raising an eyebrow. "Y'know, you shouldn't break in to other majin's homes."

"I didn't break in," Tsuko said, rounding the couch and sitting down. She looked up at Leeli and smiled brightly, showing her teeth. "The door was open."

Leeli grumbled a non-committal reply as she dropped back down onto the couch. "What are you doing here anyway? Usually you don't pop in during the day."

"I didth brave the sun to see how you were doing, mine friend," she replied, pushing her sunglasses up onto her head. "You were acting kinda weird and mood swingy at the meeting today."

"Well, you know, the moon controls women's menstrual cycles, maybe the Solda'en'tar'a give half-saiya-jin's mood swings," Leeli shrugged.

"Uh, you're not going to got ape on me, are you?" Tsuko raised an eyebrow and mock-scooted away.

"Oh, that was bad," Leeli glowered. "So, what are you really doing here?"

"Actually, it really is because you were acting damned strange at the meeting. Usually you're one of the first people to volunteer to go blow up a few mountains." Leeli winced as Tsuko continued, "but today you just seemed a million miles away."

"Just tired and remembering things," Leeli shrugged, sinking back further into the plush couch. She closed her eyes and sighed, listening to the sounds of infomercials from the television. "Hey, Tsuko?" she asked without opening her eyes. "I have a hypothetical question for you."

"Shoot," Tsuko replied.

"Well, what if there was this really great person that you were totally in love with, but you were sure they'd gotten together with someone else after you'd kinda like dumped them. Would you go to see them to make sure they were doing okay, or would you just let it drop? Hypothetically, that is."

Tsuko let out a short laugh. "Now I know it's hypothetical. You don't have anyone like that," she stopped laughing and silence ensued. "Sorry, I didn't mean to say that."

"That's okay, it's true," Leeli shrugged. "But what would you do?"

"Hmm," Tsuko hummed as she thought. "Well, in that situation, I suppose I'd go make sure the person was okay. Because if they are doing well then I know they're happy and even if that sucks for me I can take some measure of happiness from their happiness. And if their life is being made miserable than I can beat the crap out of the bitch that's making it miserable and make myself happy on a couple different levels."

Leeli smirked and opened her eyes. "Good plan."

"I thought so," Tsuko nodded as Leeli got up. "Where are you going?"

"To the store," Leeli said, looking over her shoulder as she got to the door and grabbed her coat, "for peaches and coffee." With that she walked out and shut the door.

Tsuko cocked her head to the side. "But, I've never seen you eat peaches and you hate coffee," she wondered to herself.

----

Leeli walked down the street, not noticing the reactions of people around her. Those who knew what the M on her forehead meant ran to the other side of the street or indoors, as if it would save them if she choose to attack. Fortunately for them she didn't choose to. Those that didn't know what the M stood for treated her as anyone else, a few of the men and women checked her out and one girl pointed at the M saying she wanted a tattoo on her forehead as well.

Walking into the store Leeli was brought back to the real world as the man behind the counter let out a girly scream and ducked down. Leeli smiled and waved as he looked up over the counter and at the sound of a second scream picked up a basket and began shopping.

"Coffee," she mumbled to herself, grabbing three bags off the shelf before she moved onto peaches. She stared at the peaches as she got there. "How the hell do you tell a good peach?" she wondered, reaching out and touching the peaches. "I guess the not squishy ones." She gabbed a bag and filled it full with peaches, then grabbed another bag and did the same. "Some of them have to be good."

She swung the basket she walked back up to the counter. Setting the basket down she leaned over the counter and half-glared at the man cowering there. "Hey, I'd like to check out now," she said.

"Y… yes!" the man said, jumping to his feet and scanning the items. "That… that… that will be… uh… twenty seven zeni."

"Dammit!" Leeli cursed, feeling the pockets of her coat and of her skirt. "I left my wallet in my pants. Fuck!"

"Free of charge," the man gulped, putting her peaches and coffee into a bag.

"I can't do that," Leeli said, even as the man handed her the bag.

"Sure you can," he said, looking around for a quick explanation. "You see… uh… we… uh… have a special for maj… uh… wom… uh… persons that purchase two bags of peaches. It's all free."

"Uh," Leeli raised an eyebrow. "Okay, I guess, thanks." Leeli began walking out, but turned to give the man a queer look before leaving the store. After she left the man fainted dead away from shock at having met a majin and survived.

----

"Hello Leeli."

Leeli turned as she exited the store. "Koshi, what are you doing?" she asked, cocking an eyebrow. Some random dingy street was the last place she would have expected to bump into the Saiya-jin princess.

"I saw you and thought I'd say hi," Koshi shrugged, pushing off the wall she had been leaning against. "I heard you talked to Dende today."

"Yeah," Leeli nodded. "I asked him about the Solda'en'tar'a. He basically said what Kristel said; plus they apparently make an awesome aurora in the northern cites. Thought I might check that out," she replied, giving Koshi an abridged version of her visit.

"Is that all," Koshi said thoughtfully, looking up at the sky. "When Kristel was talking you seemed to space off into thought," she brought her eyes back down to Leeli. "I thought maybe you'd made the same connections I had."

"What?" Leeli said with a small nervous laugh. "That we need pretzels at the meetings? Because I am totally for that."

"It's been ten years Leeli. There is nothing for you there that isn't better here. If you try to go back you're likely to get stuck there," Koshi said harshly, cutting off any chitchat.

The smile faded from Leeli's face and she turned her eyes down to the pavement. "I know," she replied softly, her voice no more than a whisper. "But I still want to make sure everyone is okay… and happy," her voice dropped to an even softer tone, "even if it's without me."

"Tch," Koshi scoffed turning away. "Don't be a fool. You're smarter than this. Think how you'd feel being stuck in a dimensions you no longer know, with people who don't know you, and have no place in their lives for you."

Leeli bit her lip. "I didn't say I was going."

Koshi didn't say anything for a moment. "No," she agreed, "you didn't."

Silence welled up between them and Leeli shifted uncomfortably under Koshi's gaze.

"You'd be a fool to leave a place where you're accepted and follow some stupid sentimentality and go into a dimension that you are no longer a part of," Koshi said, breaking the silence. "Think about that before you make some thoughtless decision." Koshi turned on her heels and took to the sky, causing a massive uproar among the pedestrians on the street. Leeli finally looked up and watched her fly away into the night sky.

"It really isn't that simple," she mumbled to the disappearing figure before taking to the air herself and flying toward the place she first arrived in this dimension.

----

Leeli circled from the air. It was hard enough to find the spot from the air at night, but the fact she had been unconscious when she landed didn't help either. Is all she knew is where the Son's had shown her, and they'd been walking at the time.

"I know there was a river," she mumbled to herself as she flew, "and it was either feeding into or going out of a lake. Ah, fuck it!" she cursed, landing next to Kawa lake that had Mizu river running into it. "I'm just gonna guess it's about here." Setting her feet firmly on the ground she looked around, then at her watch. 9:56 p.m. Sirin time. She looked around again. "How the hell am I supposed to find this portal? I don't even know what it would look like here."

Leeli set the bag down and sat on a rock. "Koshi's right. This is dumb, but…" she stared off into the lake, "but I just have to go." She smirked, "if I can find the bloody portal that is."

The world blurred white and Leeli let out a yell, jumping off the rock into a defensive position, and powering up. "What the fuck," she yelled as the bright light dimmed into a single point of white, flickering light. Leeli looked at her watch. 9:59 Sirin time. "It's early," she mumbled, staring up at the light. It looked the same as it had ten years ago.

Grabbing the bag of peaches and coffee she floated up and looked at the portal, biting her lip, wondering if she really should go. Taking a deep breath she sighed.

"Ah, what the hell. I'll just hurry though, make sure everything's all right and then run back before it closes," she said to the portal. "Worst thing that can happen is it closes on me again and I have to wait five years to get away from Goten living happily with his whore wife and ugly children." She blinked as she heard her words. "Uh, lovely wife and beautiful children."

Her fists clenched the straps of the bag tightly as she jumped though the portal and prayed she didn't lose her memory again.
