"What am I going to do now?" The demi muttered to himself and put his head in his hands. It couldn't be that bad... but he still felt hot and flushed from that kiss... He'd never felt quite like this before.
"Kami..." He still hadn't come quite to terms. And probably never would.
Chapter 4
The next two days Gohan pondered about his situation. At first he had tried to dismiss Vegeta's words, had tried to will it all away. Surely this couldn't be the only way. Even if he believed what Vegeta had told him about his situation - and he sure didn't! - there had to be another way... but the nightmares kept haunting his sleep worse than before, though he managed to wake himself up before it got as bad as in the first night. Yet he wore a haunted look on his face and dark rings under his eyes. And the worst was... that little inner voice that had awakened... kept taunting and teasing him. Asking him if it would be so bad, if Vegeta...
He had to admit that his will was slowly but surely weakening. After all he knew that he had nursed a slight crush on the older man... and though he wasn't too comfortable with the thought of homosexuality, it didn't actually repulse him as much as he thought it would. Grudgingly he had to admit that it seemed to be true what Vegeta had said - relationships between the same gender seemed not to be unnatural for Saiyajin, at least if he looked at his brother and Trunks. Even though they were young, it was pretty clear what they meant to each other. But that didn't help him one bit at the moment.
He just could not make up his mind, couldn't think... he needed to talk. Badly. But to whom? Whom could he trust? Who would not laugh at him or be disgusted with him? Who knew enough about everyone involved to judge the situation fairly? There was only one answer and, though Gohan did not feel very comfortable with his choice, his nerves were stretched too thin. On the third day he could not bear it anymore. He walked to his window and took off into the sky - towards his old home on Mount Paozu - towards his father.
Goku was just carrying a load of firewood around the side of his home when he felt a sudden energy signature flying that way. At first he assumed that it was Vegeta coming for a spar and moved a little faster to finish the chore that ChiChi had sent him to do. But then Gohan came into view and landed making a wide grin cross his father's face. Not worrying about the firewood, Goku dropped it with a crash and went to see his boy enthusiastically.
Gohan stood there uncertainly when he saw his father but then found himself swooped up in a crushing bear hug and all his hesitance was pretty much squeezed out of him for a moment while his dad was so happy to see him. Goku dropped him again after a moment and looked him over, resting his hands on his eldest son's shoulders.
"Wow, Gohan, did you get bigger?" He grinned but it slowly lessened when he noticed Gohan's reticent expression and patted him on the back soothingly.
"Is something wrong, son? I know you've been kinda busy lately." Goku's smile slipped a little further. He knew that Gohan had made it pretty clear that he wouldn't come around very much anymore. He was, of course, thrilled to see him but there had to be some reason for it.
Gohan hesitated when his dad suddenly turned serious, at least, as serious as he could get. Was it that obvious? It seemed so... He had a hard time looking at his dad. Goku was purely Saiyajin and in Gohan's attempt to be normal he had pushed his own father away as well as everything else and he felt bad about it. Especially now that... that he needed help concerning this very subject.
"Um... Dad... I... I have a problem..." He really didn't know what to say so he paused to try and think of something, anything.
Goku gave his son a puzzled look, then led him over to a pile of wood and made him sit down. Just as he settled beside him, his nose caught an unfamiliar scent. He leant closer, sniffing. Gohan was taken aback slightly, but Goku didn't care. He didn't consciously know what he was looking for but his instinct finally gave him the answer. A slow smile spread over his face, then matured to a huge grin. Jovially he slapped his son's back, nearly throwing him down from the wood-pile.
"Congratulations, Gohan! So my little boy is finally coming of age! I'm so proud of you!" Gohan stared as if he had just been hit by a bolt of lightning while Goku blabbered happily on, completely oblivious.
"So that's why your ki was fluctuating so wildly the last weeks! I was wondering but you didn't seem to want me around so I didn't act on it. Well, it was bound to happen sometime around now. Just wait till your mother hears it - she's going to want to throw a party!" Goku pondered for a moment.
"Or... maybe not. She's not too fond of saiyan habits and traditions. Maybe we better keep that our little secret, eh, son?" He winked.
Gohan stared dumfounded. One thought managed to catch his scrambled attention.
"Did just about everyone sense that something was up with me?" The question came out sharper than he had planned it and Goku visibly sobered. He threw a surprisingly sharp look at his son.
"No, Gohan, not *everyone* noticed. Those who care about you did but you made pretty clear that you want to be left to your own and we respected that."
Now Gohan felt even worse. His shoulders slumped and he stared down at the ground while he tried to find a reply. Even his dad knew about this... That just meant that Vegeta had told him the truth and that it was real and he was going to have to deal with it and...
"I... I'm sorry, dad. I... I think I've been really stupid..." Gohan slumped even more.
"I just wanted to... be normal. Without having to deal with monsters trying to kill me and everyone I love. I wanted to fit in, be responsible, have a normal life just like everyone else. Mom always said..." He sighed. His mom said a lot of things.
"I don't know how to deal with this..." He explained to Goku about what had been happening over the last week and how it only seemed to be getting worse. Finally he came to Vegeta and hesitated. How could he tell his dad that?
"Um... Ve... Vegeta is the one who told me... He... ah... he said..." Gohan blushed beet-red.
"He said he'd be willing to... help me."
Goku frowned for a moment as if considering just what that meant and why his son had such a strange expression on his face.
"Vegeta did? Really?"
Gohan blushed even more, looking everywhere else but at his father. Staring at the wooden bathtub that stood in front of the house he remembered why he had come. Without looking at his father he asked him quietly.
"Father... how did you live through your... your first heat?" When only silence ensued, he dared to raise his gaze again to his fathers face.
Goku honestly seemed to think about the question, his forehead creasing.
"Weelll... I went into my first heat shortly after I married your mother. She... was surprised, I can tell you that. But... to be completely honest, I'm probably not as much of help to you as you might think. Vegeta said..."
"You've talked with Vegeta about this?" Gohan interrupted, staring incredulously. His father threw him a look that seemed to say 'Sure, with whom else would I talk about it?'
"Yes, he gave me the bird's n bee's talk, so to speak." Goku remembered that day fondly. The first day he had actually seen the saiyan prince embarrassed at having to explain to his long time rival about rut and heat. But he also recalled that Vegeta had been surprisingly nice and talkative. He had secretly feared that the prince would simply laugh at him.
"He explained to me that the reason I did not go insane when I went into my first heat was that I did not have my tail at that time. That's why I was able to live through my first heat with the help of your mother, who was, I might remind you , the strongest woman on earth at that time, too."
Gohan was only a little relieved and hearing about his parents love life only served to direct his discomfort into a completely different direction. He really didn't want to know about stuff like that. So... his dad seemed to be comfortable and understanding enough of that part of this situation but... Gohan cleared his throat and tugged at his shirt collar nervously.
"Um, well, yeah. Vegeta did say something about how... earth girls wouldn't... normally, you know... because I guess I'm too strong..." He looked over at his dad, fidgeting in nervous energy over what he wasn't sure he should even say.
"And that doesn't leave me many options..." He finally forced out the words. Goku didn't seem the least bit bothered and that served to make Gohan even more agitated. Why was he the only one who was having such a hard time?! It always seemed that way! He was the one who worried about things and everyone else seemed to get along just fine!
Goku just smiled and put his arm around Gohan's shoulders, giving him a friendly squeeze.
"What do you mean? You said you already talked to Vegeta about it, didn't you? He'll make sure you're just fine. You know, it surprised me for a second when you first said that but Vegeta's a good guy. Just nobody really talks to him enough to realize that. He does seem pretty unapproachable most of the time but he's really not. You'd be surprised what a difference there is once you get past that." Goku grinned down at him teasingly.
"You shouldn't worry so much, Gohan. Vegeta wouldn't offer something like this if he didn't care. And anyway... This is a big thing... It's not something that can be ignored or forgotten without problems. You're gonna have plenty of other things to worry about. I know you'll be fine. You just have to let nature take its course. There's not much you can do about it." Then Goku stood up and stretched as if the whole matter was answered and ended.
"You're gonna have a lot of pent up energy for a while. If you want, we can start sparring again. I'm sure it will help a lot."
Gohan stood up as well, still bothered but at least things were... he wasn't sure if it was a good thing that this was all just as Vegeta said but his dad didn't have any problems with it. Goku seemed even easier with it than Vegeta had been.
"Alright, dad. I think maybe I will. Thanks. I really needed to talk."
"No problem, son. That's what I'm here for. I'm glad you came to me to talk." Goku's eyes shone bright with something that Gohan suddenly identified as love. He was more surrised than he should ahve been. His dad loved him. Even though he had acted so cold towards his family and heritage, towards fighting and everything Goku held dear. He still loved him. It made Gohan feel warm inside. Slowly his smile mirrored his father's and both men shared a moment of complete contended silence. Then Goku's next words cracked Gohan's newly found confidence. The full blooded Saiyajin turned to look at his son and suddenly winked mischievously.
"Well Gohan, I'm really glad that Vegeta offered to help you through this. Trust me, he'll... teach you a lot of useful things." Gohan looked confused. What was that supposed to mean? Suddenly a suspicion overcame him and he blushed.
"But dad... how would you know... I mean... Why... err... what...?" Goku smiled, then his smile changed into something that eerily reminded Gohan of Vegeta's smirk and he gained the impression that there was a possibility that he may have judged his father wrong somewhere. The older Saiyajin's tail swayed lazily as he grinned at his son.
"Well, Gohan, when I was your age I did not have my tail, and so it wasn't as bad as it could have been... but when I got my tail back..." Gohan remembered, that had been five years ago, when Goku decided that he wanted to finally feel whole again,
"Well, lets just say I needed assistance to cope with the hormonal effects and Vegeta was... very helpful. Even you mother appreciates my... new experiences..." Gohan blushed even more at hearing this, but his father had already turned around and with another wink and a wave, disappeared into the house, leaving his son spluttering and feeling extremely confused outside.
Gohan stood there for a few moments, mouth agape, before realizing it and then turned away, leaping into the air and flying back to his little apartment. He seemed to be having a lot of ups and downs lately, well... more downs than ups but... Every time he started to feel a little better, something would happen to throw him off again. His dad?! And Vegeta?! He'd never even noticed! But... it wasn't like... they weren't... really... A whole year!! He put his hands up to his temples trying to relieve the sudden pressure. Why did no one seem to see anything wrong with all this?! Why was everyone else taking this better than *he* was?! Gohan had been so wound up ever since that first nightmare and... Vegeta... that he hadn't been able to study or work. His concentration had been shot to hell and he was jumpy and tense. He groaned and then pushed all the thoughts away, speeding home. Videl had made him promise that he would go out tonight with her and a few of her friends to some club to unwind since he snapped at her yesterday during studies. Not wanting to upset her more, he had agreed finally. He also figured that a night out would be good for him. Now he had the impression that it wouldn't help him much but still he had promised. Arriving home, he banished all uncomfortable thoughts and got ready, vowing to himself that he would relax and have fun. This was supposed to be a natural thing and he could handle it. He had self control. He would *not* turn into some mindless brute just because of a few hormones!
Dressed, he carefully wound his tail around his waist to hide it beneath his dress shirt and went off to meet his girlfriend.
Music burst loudly as the door to the men's bathroom slammed open and Gohan stumbled inside to lean over the sink, breathing rather shallowly. He looked up into the mirror and could see a faint blush on his cheeks and half growled, half groaned. This night had not gone very well at all. The evening had started so good but then grew steadily worse at the club. What was wrong with him?! He only had one drink so it wasn't that. He didn't drink much anyway normally.
There were too many scents all around, they were confusing and distracting and driving him nuts. His senses were much more acute tonight than normal. And Videl... *She* had had a bit too much to drink and she was giving him some serious problems. She wouldn't keep her hands off him and what Vegeta said about ningen females kept coming back to him... He groaned again. He was so hot, damn it!! He just needed to get through this and go home and sleep! He wondered if they would notice if he just left because he really didn't think he could trust himself if he went back out there again. Tonight he felt it was a safe bet that Videl's friends would keep her out of trouble better than he would.
Something squeezed around his waist and he jumped tensely. He straightened and un-tucked his shirt to reveal and stare at his tail which began snapping back and forth in irritation, puffed out twice its normal size. He grumbled at it but it served to help him decide. He had to get out of here. He didn't even bother with the door. He just opened the bathroom window and flew out into the refreshingly cool night air.
After a short, uneventful flight Gohan arrived back at his apartment. He had pondered for a moments to try and get rid of this pent up energy by patrolling the streets as Saiyaman and hopefully catching a few criminals, but had decided against it. He felt too... odd. Too hot, too unstable... he had the feeling that strange shadows lurked in the night shrouded corners and that someone was watching him all the time but he shook it off as his overactive imagination. Yawning he just did the most basic stuff and then slipped into bed, only wearing a pair of boxer shorts because he was still feeling so unnaturally hot. The light sheets draped only over his lower half and, with the window slightly ajar to let the cool night breeze pleasantly fan his sweat slicked body, he slipped into Morpheus' awaiting arms.
In his dream he wandered the darkened streets of the city that had passed underneath him not long ago. He was not alone, but for the moment he didn't care. He had a goal, but he did not know what it was. The silent figure alongside him moved just like his shadow, their stride completely in sync. When he listened very closely Gohan absentmindedly thought, he could even hear that they breathed in the same rhythm. He knew who was there, walking through the moonlit city with him. The silver orb shone bright in the night-sky, dimming the artificial light of the city down to unimportance.
When his shadow first spoke, Gohan did not know whether it was actually a voice or his own thoughts.
"So fine... so beautiful..." Gohan nodded at the words. Without having to ask he knew what the other talked about.
"So hot... we need something... anything..." Yet again Gohan gave his affirmation. Only now did he truly notice how hot he felt. He was wearing his normal clothes, jeans and a light shirt. Yet he was sweating, his hair hanging limply, his tail likewise. The figure beside him stalked nearer, yet stayed unobtrusively in the shadows.
"She's near... I can smell her... should we get her...?" Gohan was feeling dizzy... his vision seemed to waver, turning a hazy red now and then.
"Mmmmh... but him... we could always get him... you know... he is... special. He would... satisfy us... hot blood… spurting out..." The voice was smooth and liquid and it seemed to burn Gohan's mind as much as his body already did. It soothed and at the same time made his hackles rise and his muscles tense with the anticipation that smothered each syllable it formed.
Gohan swallowed as another wave of heat passed him by. The figure beside him continued to drone on, low and husky, barely above a whisper, yet utterly familiar.
"Mmmmh... what nice choices... screams in the night... and hot blood... him or her... what do you think... break her... hunt him... mmmh... both so very appealing... so nice…" Gohan groaned, closing his eyes. He couldn't think... he didn't want to think... he needed... needed... not to think... don't think…
"No..." He groaned quietly, staggering slightly beneath the distant light of a street-lamp.
"No...? Don't you want them? You need them... you need me... everyone needs me. Come. I'll let you choose... I want them both, but I'll accept one... Him... her... him... her..." the voice grew into an eerie singsong. Gohan's head pounded like mad, his vision full of swirling colors and... so hot... so *fucking* hot... couldn't think... couldn't...
"Him... her... come on, choose... it's going to be fun... you need it... need it so bad... want it… come, come... him, her..."
So alluring... so teasing... coppery blood and satisfaction... Agony... A distant memory… gracing Gohan's mind... dark eyes... a name… a smile and a hiss… everything blurring… Scent. Sweat. Salt. Blood. Need …Life…
"Ah... an excellent choice. Let the hunt begin!" Cold delight was audible in the voice and goose bumps rose on Gohan's skin but before he could try and compose himself another heat wave approached and took him over, extinguishing him in fire and then... darkness..
More confusion plagued Gohan but he couldn't escape it. He was trapped in darkness and discomfort while ghostly images bombarded him though he couldn't grasp hold of any long enough to remember them. People, voices, thoughts, places passed by him in a jumble. None of it made any sense to him.
After what seemed like an eternity, the warm sunlight streamed down to caress over his face causing him to shift and vaguely he found himself rolling, wrapped up in his damp sheets and searching vainly for a way out. When he finally seized consciousness he lay there blinking dully until he realized that it was the ringing of the phone that woke him. Flopping over onto his stomach, his groping hand found the receiver and picked it up so he could mumble groggily into it.
".... mmyyeah…? Hello?" The room was bright with early morning light and Gohan curled his other arm over squinting, bleary eyes to shut it out. He felt so tired still... and hot! Laying on his stomach he could feel another problem and barely restrained himself from rubbing his throbbing erection into the mattress with a sigh. It took a moment to understand the person speaking to him over the telephone.
"....My goodness, Gohan. It's just... It's... I heard from Erasa while I was shopping. I just wanted to... I mean... Are you okay, dear? It must have been a shock."
Gohan frowned into his pillow and concentrated more on the one-sided conversation.
"Mom? What... What are you talking about?" He mumbled tiredly, stifling a yawn. The voice on the other end stopped abruptly and there was only silence. Gohan tried to open his eyes but it was just easier to keep them closed. The frown could be heard clearly in his raspy voice.
"Mom? Is something wrong?"
ChiChi replied softly after a moment.
"Gohan... You don't know?"
Gohan was still lethargically trying to remove himself from his sheets, cursing inwardly at his embrassing statem which wasn't what you liked to have when busy talking to your mother and thus unable to act about it.
"Know what, mom?"
"It's... I heard from Erasa. Last night, Videl was at a club with her friends. I assumed that you were there with her."
Gohan finally gave up and fell back onto the bed.
"Oh... Yeah. I was but I didn't feel that well. I went home early."
Emotion choked his mother's voice as she forced herself to speak again.
"Gohan. At that club... Videl and her friends got a little out of hand and joined up with some other group of people there... and Videl... well... Erasa didn't tell me all the details. She said that none of them were really all that coherent. But... They found Videl… She is in the hospital. She was raped..."
Silence.
