She's Who?

Part 10

After the men and ChiChi had eaten. "Well, let's go train!" said an excited Goku. He had consciously not remarked on how good Miranda's cooking was, he didn't want to give ChiChi another reason to blow her top. "Girl, that was actually edible," said the proud prince as he exited. ChiChi gaped at the compliment Miranda had just gotten. Vegeta never said anything about her cooking. She just figured that no news was good news. Goten tripped when he heard it. 'Trunks won't believe this!' he thought. Goku hadn't heard it he was already outside. "Thank you?" said Miranda. She wasn't sure if it was a compliment or not. Miranda put the last pan in the sink to soak and then she turned around to get herself some breakfast. Goten yelled, "We'll be outside. You could come watch us train? If you want to that is." Miranda answered, "Yeah, after breakfast is cleaned up." ChiChi had heard from upstairs, she had gone upstairs to put her hair up and make the bed. "It'll be lunch by time that mess is cleaned up," thought Chichi. They sure didn't leave much. So she ate some eggs, biscuits and gravy, and what was left of the bacon. Glad to have no leftovers to put away. When she finished doing dishes Chichi had come back downstairs, putting the last pin in her hair. "I hope…," she had started but was stunned to see dishes done and put away, in the right spot she hoped, and Miranda sweeping the floor. "You hope what?" asked Miranda. "Never mind," said ChiChi. "Why don't you go outside and watch the guys a bit. You've done so much already." "Yeah, I've always liked mornings best. Maybe I can go wander around a bit?" asked Miranda. "Sure, just don't go too far without an escort. It's easy to get lost here and there are some dangerous animals around," called ChiChi. "Could you be back to help with lunch?" she asked. "Yes, I can," said Miranda as she headed out the door into a bright sunny day.

She actually had to look a bit for the guys. She found them more with her ears than anything else. Everything was so quiet except for some exploding sounds and the vocal exclamations of the men as they hit or were hit. She slowly walked up to the area, not really sure if it was actually them, when she saw Goten. He was sitting under a tree looking up at the sky. "Hey, what you looking at?" she asked. "Just watching Dad and Vegeta fight," he answered. She looked while turning around in a complete circle. "Where?" she asked. "Over there," he said. She looked in a complete circle once again, this time with her hand at her brow to block any glare that may have been in her eyes the first time. " I still don't see them," she stated. "No, up there!" he said. "Uh," she started. "Look up silly," he said. And she did.

She promptly fell on her bottom. "How are they doing that?" she asked. "It's kind of hard to explain," said Goten, "But I'm sure Dad or I could show you how, if you want to?" "Why? Do you think I could do that?" she asked wearily. "Yep, should be a cinch for you," said Goten. "Why would it be easy for me?" she asked. "Because you're pretty strong, for a girl anyway," started Goten. "I am strong for a WHAT!" exclaimed Miranda. "I said you're strong for a girl, everyone knows that females are weaker than males," stated Goten. "Yeah, you just keep telling yourself that," said Miranda snidely. Goku and Vegeta had heard her yell at Goten and had stopped to see what's going on. Goku had started to make a move to interfere when Vegeta stopped him. He wanted to see what the girl could do, if anything. "What you don't believe me?" Goten said, "Here I'll prove it. I'll knock this tree down with on punch. Then we'll see if you can knock that tree down with one punch. Deal?" "Sure," said Miranda without even blinking an eye.

Goten walked up to his tree and knocked it down just like he said. Miranda did the same with her tree. "Next test?" she asked. "Okay, I'll chop it up without the aid of an axe. How's that?" he asked. "Sounds good," she answered. Once again they both did what the challenge was. "Next?" she asked. "Can you set it on fire without matches? Like this?" and Goten then sent a very small energy blast to the tree and set it on fire. Miranda blinked, she had never met anyone else that could do that. She then promptly set her tree afire. It was now Goten, Goku, and Vegeta's turn to blink.

She quickly found herself under a lot of scrutiny. Goku quickly landed and asked "How?" in stereo, as he wasn't the only one to say that. "It's not something I really want to talk about," she answered. "I really look forward to you teaching me to fly Goten," she said as she walked away.

"Where are you going?" asked Goku. "For a walk," she answered. "Goten, why don't you go with her to make sure she doesn't get lost?" asked Goku. "Sure," said Goten. "No, not necessary," said Miranda, "I promised chichi I would be back to help make lunch. So I'm not going far." "Still, I'd feel better," started Goku. "No, I said. I'd like to be alone right now," she said. "Oh," said the Son men as she left the area. "Are we sparring or not, Kakarrot?" queried Vegeta. "Yeah, of course!" answered Goku. "I'm going to go see Trunks," said Goten, "Do you think Mom and Miranda will mind having him over for lunch?" "Nah, don't think they'll mind. Why don't you two come back here and then we could have a father-son team spar?" asked Goku. "Yeah! That sounds good! Be back in a sec," said an excited Goten.

Miranda had walked off and kept her word. She hadn't gone far, in fact, she was sitting under a tree not far from the house. She was thinking of her mother. <Fade to memory> Miranda had done something, again to make her father mad. He'd kicked her out of the house and into the woods. He yelled at her, called her a monster, and told her not to come back till her mother came to get her. But it was fall and she was cold. She had gathered wood for a fire but no matches. She tried rubbing sticks together but the wood was too wet. She sat there getting mad at herself and struck a tree in anger, when a spark flew. That how she first did it. (If that's right, who knows? Not I) <Back to thinking> She remembered showing her mother once how to start a fire with her own fire. That's what she called it anyway. Her mother freaked. "Don't ever show that to anybody else, especially your father! He'd never let you back in the house then. He'd possibly kill you! He'd say you're just as dangerous as the monster that made you! Please, for your own safety, never show anyone that!" her mother pleaded. She'd called her biological father a monster. "Was she a monster too?" She always wondered. Thinking again of her biological father she remembered her mother said he was on TV and had attacked on city, several Navy ships and airplanes. Her "father's" second wife had said that one of the men on TV had attacked the village and raped several of the women there. She only knew that only a few had survived his abuse. Fewer had survived childbirth. She said that a few men, whose wives had died in childbirth, took the children to a monastery and left them on the doorstep. Others weren't so kind, they had taken the babes to the woods and left them. It's said a few had survived. Others just say that is said to make children mind, kind of like "The Boogie Man." She was just glad she looked nothing like him. She did have a deep raspy voice though, in a "Cher" kind of way. And she did have, at least some, of his strength. She just never wanted to use it to hurt someone who didn't deserve it. "I wonder if Goku knows anything about him?" she thought aloud. "About who?" asked ChiChi, startling Miranda out of her inner thoughts. "Oh nothing, just thinking," answered Miranda. "Time to make lunch?" asked Miranda. "Yep, come on. I'll teach you some of out favorite foods."

At lunch, Goku was glad that his wives had decided to get along. Boy was he glad! The faces on Vegeta, Goten and Trunks were priceless too. Apparently Miranda is a quick learner. And ChiChi, an accommodating teacher. They had made, in two hours, dumplings, rice, spring rolls, sushi, California rolls, ramen, steamed fish and some fried bread rolls. Once again, there was food on the table they did not recognize, albeit, not as many as at breakfast.
