Chapter Two

"Wolves"

Vegeta had reached the edge of town, and there was still no sign of a new fast food place, the strange smells or the girl he'd seen. He decided to go for a walk in the woods. He set off, contemplating the day's events. They fogged his mind and made him tired just to try and figure one out. He walked deeper and deeper into the woods. It didn't really matter if he got lost. He could use his keen senses to get him back or simply fly above the treetops and look around, so he allowed his thoughts to swallow him up for a short time.

A man stood facing him as he stepped into a clearing. He had black hair and black eyes with a sinister look to him. He wore steel gray leggings and a black tunic. It had no sleeves, but unlike the girl he had seen earlier, he wore no shirt underneath. He had a silver cape and navy blue, fingerless gloves and boots. He had a muscular build, but that wasn't what Vegeta noticed most. What he did notice the most was that this man had a Saiyan tail as well...though it was black as his hair and eyes and it looked thicker and coarser than a normal Saiyan tail. Vegeta could tell because his had grown back a few months before.

"Who are you?!" Vegeta demanded.

The man laughed coldly and didn't respond.

"Well whoever you are, you'll do well to MOVE!" Vegeta said menacingly. The man laughed again and launched himself at Vegeta with surprising speed. Suddenly, a blur of silver crossed Vegeta's path once more. There was a masculine yell of anger and a curse, then Vegeta felt a fist strike his head from behind and his world went black.

An indefinite amount of time had passed when Vegeta finally woke. He looked around and wondered how long it had been. It was night, he saw, though angry, black storm clouds covered the moon and stars. Thunder rumbled overhead and lightning split the sky. Rain burst from the clouds overhead and poured down as Vegeta ran his fingers through his hair. He looked at his fingers, now wet with blood, groaned and painfully sat up. He looked around again, taking more careful note of his surroundings. He was in the same clearing as he was knocked out in. The man was gone, but in his place was a muscular black wolf about the size of a tiger with glowing red eyes pacing back and forth not far from him. A silver wolf, only slightly smaller in size, slender and sturdy looking, was snarling at the black wolf, it's hackles raised.

"Who the Hell are you?!!" Vegeta demanded, wincing slightly at the pain yelling caused his head.

Wait a minute, what am I thinking? They're animals, they can't talk! He scolded to himself.

"He is Shai," the silver wolf, to his surprise, said. "I am Cosorce." Vegeta jumped slightly in surprise that an animal was...talking to him. "Don't worry," Cosorce spoke again, "though he is here to kill you, I'm here to protect you."

Vegeta looked around. Maybe the sky would be pink, or the trees orange or purple, or something else would tell him he had just been hit in the head too hard, or was dreaming. But everything looked just as it should, except that there were two giant wolves, one who apparently wanted him dead for reasons unknown and another who seemed to be guarding him AND could talk.

"Oh man..." He said. "I must be dreaming."

Cosorce never took her eyes off of Shai, but she spoke again. "You're wide awake, Prince, and you're not insane."

Vegeta jumped up, ignoring the blinding, white-hot pain bursting through his head. "How did you know that?" He yelled. Cosorce continued to watch Shai. "HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT?!!" He screamed, pain streaming through him as he did so.

"I'll explain later, if that's what you wish." Cosorce stated quietly.

"I want an explanation NOW!" Vegeta growled.

Cosorce growled at him, then charged at Shai, who leaped aside and ran into the forest. "Damn it! Damn him! Damn him straight to Hell!" Cosorce roared, slapping her paw on the ground.

"I demand to know what is going on here." Vegeta said, arms crossed.

"Sit." Cosorce ordered.

"I take orders from no one!" Vegeta said indignantly.

Cosorce shrugged. "Fine, have it your way." She leaped at his chest and knocked him over, forcing him into a lying position. She sat on his chest, constricting his breath. He glared but lay still. Cosorce nodded in approval and got off to lie down beside him. "As I said, his name is Shai. He wants to kill you because he can't kill me, so he wants to hurt me instead. Then maybe grief would make me weak enough to kill."

"Grief?" Vegeta asked, puzzled.

"Shut up!" Cosorce said, exasperated. "Do you want to hear this or not?!"

Vegeta glared but said nothing.

"Good, that's much better." Cosorce said smugly. "Now, he wants to hurt or kill me because I was chosen as the Sacred Wolf and he wasn't."

"A what wolf?" Vegeta interrupted again. Cosorce growled at him and he muttered something vaguely resembling an apology...very vaguely...

"Sacred Wolves guard all things just and good and have special powers. For example, the Sacred Wolf of Fire, or Fire Wolf, would have powers involving fire. His/her transformation would be a red wolf. I am the Silver Wolf, my power involves all elements. Sort of like a rainbow instead of a single colour. I am also a Guardian, your Guardian to be exact. Your father chose me when I was very, very young. That was when I was a pure Saiyan. After I became a Saiyan/wolf, I couldn't have my job taken away because I hadn't done anything wrong. Quite the contrary, actually, but everyone hated me after that. It didn't really matter since my life is lived in shadow anyway."

"...Saiyan/wolf?" Vegeta wondered aloud. "I don't want to know how that came about." He made a face.

Cosorce sighed. "It's not what you think. There's a wolf. He's about the size of a large elephant. He changes colour all the time. He's the God of all wolves and leader of the Sacred Wolves. Those who know him call him `Great Wolf.' A few years after I was born, all children were brought before him. You yourself were too. He said that you couldn't be the one he was looking for. He said "The one I am looking for will touch his life, bringing light to his darkness." No one knew what he meant, people were starting to get fed up with him. They thought, if their Prince was not the one they were looking for, who was?! Then one day, a child was brought before him. As soon as he touched this child, he titled his head back and sent up a mighty war cry. The brave Saiyans huddled back in fear of his mighty roar, except for the child, who stood unafraid. "I'VE FOUND HER!!!!!!" He roared. Her??? The people muttered. How could the one they were looking for be a girl!? The child was given wolf's blood, making her stronger, swifter, all in all more powerful, with so much more potential for power than any other Saiyan."

"How do you know all this?" Vegeta inquired.

"Because that child...was me."

Vegeta blinked. "What?"

"What part don't you understand?" Cosorce asked.

Vegeta looked thoughtful. "None...I guess...Great Wolf, huh?"

"That's right." Cosorce said simply.

"Interesting..." Vegeta said.

Cosorce cocked her head in question.

"I don't remember any of this..."

Cosorce could only shrug.

"So...what, specifically, does Shai have to do with all this?"

Cosorce sighed rather sadly. "Shai...Shai..." She sighed again. "Like I said, Shai wanted desperately to be the Sacred Wolf, any Sacred Wolf. But the Silver Wolf...so much power..." Cosorce shivered slightly. "But when Great Wolf touched him, he coiled back and couldn't move until Shai was removed. The evil in him was far too great for a creature of such pureness as a God to touch. After that, Shai lived with great resentment. Great Wolf still searched, but he was beginning to lose hope. Imagine, a God losing hope! On the day Great Wolf decided his search was futile, when he was about to give up...that was the day I was brought forward."

Vegeta said nothing. Cosorce decided to leave at that. She said goodbye and ran into the forest. Vegeta decided to stay there for the night, his head was pounding so hard he didn't want to get up. He settled into the very spot Cosorce had knocked him into and went to sleep.
