Chapter 12 - Kakarotto
Goku felt the warmth and smoothness of Vegeta's body leave his side and grumbled immediately, turning over, and gathering the furs to himself greedily. Vegeta, naked, stepped over Goku to walk to the tent flap.
Goku opened one sleepy eye to watch as Vegeta pulled back the tent flap wide. Golden-pink sunlight poured over the contours of Vegeta's muscular body.
Nardon stood in the tent's entrance and briefly looked over Vegeta's body, noting the numerous scars that criss-crossed it.
“I'm sorry to disturb you Cousin.” Nardon snuck a look over Vegeta's shoulder at Goku, still on the floor wrapped in furs. Nardon turned his eyes back on Vegeta.
Vegeta having enjoyed his sleep, and noting how the rest of the camp barely stirred over Nardon's shoulder, practically growled at Nardon for disturbing him so early. “What do you want?”
Nardon smiled at Vegeta, liking the smaller Saiyan for his gruff and rude behavior all the more. “A fine morning to you, Cousin. My brother desires to speak with both you and the Radditsen over breakfast. He is in the largest tent, waiting for you there now. He wishes to talk to you both about the rumors that are circulating - it looks like your friend's people are preparing for attacks on our people. The settlement to the south is seeing a lot of activity, and what's more, Kakarotto has arrived and is encamped there. Our scouts are watching to see if he makes a move. We may have to leave sooner to try a peace treaty with Raddoon than we had originally thought. Well, my brother will talk to you about the rest.” Nardon nodded to Vegeta in respect and took his leave.
Vegeta just grunted and was about to let the flap fall back shut when he saw two females walking by, smirking at him and openly admiring his nude physique. Vegeta sneered at them, Vegeta not very much the morning person this day. He let the flap fall closed finally and turned around to start getting dressed only to find a jumping Goku just behind him trying to get past.
“And just where do you think you're going?” Vegeta demanded.
“I've got to pee! Vegeta, let me pass.”
Vegeta didn't budge, just watched as Goku jumped up and down. “You're not going anywhere like that!” Vegeta eyed Goku's nude body possessively.
Goku was about to protest that if he had to take the time to work spandex over his legs he would pee on himself, but Vegeta just pointed to the corner of the tent. “There's a receptacle there for that.”
Goku ran to it and relieved himself, sighing heartily. Vegeta just shook his head at his silly lover and set about to getting dressed.
* * *
Both Vegeta and Goku sat at a large wooden table under a tremendous tent, eating to their heart's content from the vast array of food laid out before them. There were roasted meats, baked breads, various flavored butters, fruits baked into hot grain cereals, milk and strong tea. Goku was so busy stuffing his face that when Vegit asked him a question, he didn't hear him, Vegeta having to nudge him to get his attention.
Goku turned a face full of food towards Vegit and swallowed the heaping mouthful in one gulp, the large quantity of food making a huge bulge in his throat before it disappeared on its way down to his stomach. “Sorry!” Goku laughed, and scratched the back of his head.
“No problem, my friend!” Vegit laughed his huge, booming laugh. He leaned in towards Goku and Goku smiled openly at him. Vegit laughed despite the need to be serious. Goku was like no other Radditsen he had ever met.
“I wanted to know if you were ready to make the journey today, to the nearest of your people's camps? Nardon will take you and of course, I would love Cousin Vegita to go along as well.”
Goku shrugged, “Sure!”
Vegeta kept his face neutral.
Vegit leaned closer to Goku, tapping his arm in a friendly manner. “It is a very important trip, my friend. Your people have been threatening a war. Our clan's camps that border the Radditsen camp are under constant threat and unfortunately, your relative, Kakarotto, has been a driving force in this.”
Vegeta watched the exchange and wondered if they thought Goku knew something about any of this. He hoped that this wasn't some kind of veiled interrogation because Vegeta was enjoying his food too much to have to destroy the place and everyone in it.
Vegit continued, “Raddoon, although he wishes to be made leader of all Saiyans, is inept and relies on Kakarotto's advice too heavily. Some say that as soon as Raddoon is made King, Kakarotto will slit his throat and take the throne. That would mean very dark days, indeed, for our people, if it should ever happen. Your relative is a bit unstable, I'm afraid. There is rumor that he was dropped on his head as a child.”
Vegeta choked on his oatmeal, spitting grain all over the table.
“It has made him mean and unreasonable. We are unfortunate in that coupled with that unstable personality he is a formidable warrior, the likes of which is hard to match. I've only a few warriors in my camp that could match him in strength and skill, but there is further talk that he holds back as he fights, so, we are not really sure what we are capable of against him.”
“What we need you to do is to reason with Raddoon. Your resemblance, from what I hear, is quite remarkable to Kakarotto's. Perhaps, seeing the similarity, Raddoon will be more willing to listen to you. I've heard that Raddoon can be reasoned with, if we can just get past Kakarotto. It is also been said that the two are lovers, so you see the problem we have to face in getting to him. We need to make him see that this war will not help our people.”
Goku nodded, looking determined. He knew that he was only hearing one side of the argument, and perhaps not getting the entire story, but he liked Vegit's desire to avoid war and thought that was good enough cause to agree.
“Yes, I'll be happy to speak to him.”
“There is a possibility that you may only be able to speak with Kakarotto. He may be willing to listen to you since you are his relative. I also think there is a possibility he will be willing to speak with Cousin Vegeta.”
Vegit looked at the bruise on Goku's neck in the shape of a bite mark, then turned to Vegeta and smiled at him warmly. “It is no secret that Cousin is a formidable warrior himself. The way he carries himself is proof enough and makes it quite evident. Perhaps, showing Kakarotto that we too have our own elite warriors may sway him to be more open to compromise.”
Vegit turned back to Goku, “Kakarot, you can convey the message that I'm willing to overlook his past deeds if he makes a compromise with us.”
Vegeta finally interrupted, “But what of the urge to fight? You yourself know that we are a warrior race. We have a desire for war and carnage, even if it is with each other. How are you going to dampen that spirit in Kakarotto if what you say is true, that he is one of the bloodiest and most ruthless of warriors?”
“Well, I thought that I'd offer him the opportunity to be one of my elite warriors -- a guarantee at a high position in the kingdom as opposed to a gamble for everything. I'm hoping that will hold him for now. Would you be averse to his having an equal standing with you, Cousin?”
Vegeta blanched. “So, I guess you want to make me one of your elite's then?” Vegeta let the annoyance on his face and in his voice show plainly, and Vegit looked embarrassed.
“Cousin, I would formally ask you, if you prefer? It is just, we are relatives… I thought I wouldn't have to stand on ceremony?”
Vegeta grunted. Goku watched Vegeta cautiously and almost sighed audibly when it became obvious that Vegeta would make no further comment.
“Well, I hope that I haven't upset you Cousin. But…” And Vegit's face and voice took on a character that was reminiscent of a certain Saiyan Prince, “I am going to be the King of my race. I'm the most logical selection. I orchestrated this Saiyan Tuffle war while Kakarotto and Raddoon busied themselves with small tribal skirmishes. They lead only for their personal gain. I lead to better my people. I would very much like that you fight by my side, Vegeta. It is obvious that you are a warrior of pride and integrity and our people need your shining example.”
Vegeta smirked, finally. There, that's more like it, he thought. Vegit didn't have to know at this point that as soon as Vegeta figured out all there was at play in this that he would make a move for the throne himself. Still, Vegeta had to respect the obvious pride in the man and admired him for it.
Vegit looked relieved at the look on Vegeta's face and smiled openly at both of his guests.
“Well, eat your fill and then Nardon will take you south. Oh, you may want to change into lighter garments. Our scouts have reported that the weather is sweltering there. We can provide you with what you need.”
Vegeta smirked. He looked forward to meeting this Kakarotto and Raddoon. He wanted to know the full story before he acted. Yes, there was his allegiance to his own family line to consider, but in light of how history turned out for the whole Saiyan race, Vegeta was leaving himself open to all options
* *
Goku and Vegeta, back in their tent, changed into the Saiyan garb that had been provided for them. The clothing was entirely leather. They wore black leather pants, or braes as they called them here. They donned black leather vests that showed off their arms, plus a bit of rippled ab and a hint of strong pecs. The pants were tight, yet flexible, so while the pants showed off the muscles of their legs well, they remained comfortable. Black boots finished off the ensemble. Goku didn't know how these garments would be less warm to wear than their spandex, but he was glad to have a change of clothes. He only missed his orange gi, but figured that would really set him apart here. Vegeta just wanted to get the mission under way, so he put on the clothes without argument.
Finished dressing, they eyed each other in all the black leather and their faces went hot. Both turned away from each other to busily put their other clothes away.
Goku, just to talk about something, said, “I wonder what this Kakarotto is like. He sounds a bit like a monster.”
Vegeta smirked, “Yeah, with your face, apparently.” Vegeta crossed his arms, and regarded Goku. “Funny how he was dropped on his head too, but it seems his fall had the opposite effect on him.”
Goku just laughed and scratched the back of his head.
Vegeta continued, “Still, I want to meet him and Raddoon. I have a feeling that what Vegit is saying is true for the most part, but, well, I'm keeping my options open before I act.”
Goku swallowed at the implication of those words, “Act?”
Vegeta smirked, “Hmm, yes.”
Goku stared at him, his face concerned, “Vegeta, what are you planning?”
“I'm going to meet these Radditsen, and then when all is finally clear, I'll make a move. It's a shame really, since I'll most likely have to betray my own ancestors, if Vegit can't be made to see reason.”
Goku blinked at Vegeta, perplexed. “Your ancestors? I know they look like you and Trunks, but…”
Vegeta simply said, “I know they are.”
“How?”
Vegeta thought he would clue Goku in fully, “Vegit was my Great, Great, Great Grandfather.”
Goku gasped, mouth agape at Vegeta. “Really? How do you know?” Goku started counting backwards, trying to figure out how many fathers ago Great, Great, Great Grandfather was.
Vegeta, looking proud, his arms crossed, replied, “I read all about him as a boy. There were even artist renderings of him in some of the histories in my family's library. It's him, no doubt.” Vegeta said, looking smug.
“But knowing this, you'd still betray him? I don't understand!” Goku couldn't help the hint of disappointment in his voice.
“Yes, Kakarot. I would. I may owe him my blood, heck, even my birth, but I don't like the direction my family ultimately takes our people in, if you get what I mean. I have an opportunity to fix things, and I can't do that by letting it happen all over again.”
“But, if you betray him… well, you may never be born!”
“Here, you mean. Who cares! I'm here now and I know what the future holds unless I do something to change it. And honestly, Vegit leads too slowly. You saw the camp last night. They are slovenly, drunk and slow. I always wondered why it took so long for our people to conquer the planet from those weaklings, the Tuffles, how they could let themselves be pushed to the outer reaches of the planet by them, but now I know why!” Vegeta was really angry now, letting it all come out. “They need to learn what it means to have Saiyan Pride!”
Goku felt his stomach do a little flip.
Vegeta regarded Goku and smirked. “Don't worry Kakarot, I'll bide my time until it is right. But ultimately, I will see to it that my people realize that their destiny doesn't have to end at the hands of Frieza or any other bastard that shows up here. The Saiyans are meant for greater things.”
Just then, Nardon came into their tent and smiled at the pair.
“Our clothes suit you! Well, we should leave soon. Whenever you are ready?”
* * *
Nardon pointed the way to the Radditsen settlement and Goku and Vegeta tore through the skies, Nardon following just behind. They flew at breakneck speed, the wind blowing their hair back away from their faces.
Nardon stared at the pair as he flew behind them, wondering how they came together. They sometimes regarded each other in antagonism, which was a natural way for a Vegitsen and a Radditsen behave with each other, but still, the implication of that bruise on the Radditsen's neck left little doubt as to their true regard for each other. This Radditsen meant a lot to the powerful, small Vegitsen warrior. As much as Nardon thanked their fortune for having a Radditsen willing to talk some sense into Raddoon, he still hated the Radditsen with a passion. But he knew that he would never risk the wrath of the small and powerful warrior flying up ahead by doing something stupid to the Radditsen. He'd be a fool to try.
It took several hours of travel, with a short stop for food before they saw the first signs of the camp. Not long after they resumed travel from their brief rest, they could begin to see the smoke from camp fires wafting skyward in the distance.
Nardon called them up short, and finally being civil to Goku after his treatment the day before, he said, “Kakarot, we need you to lead us into the camp. Otherwise, they will try to attack Vegeta and I. I can take over the discussion once we are actually talking with Raddoon and he realizes that you endorse a discussion.”
Goku smiled, “Ok. Sure.”
They all nodded to each other and flew down to the settlement in a twirl, Goku at the lead.
* * *
As they landed, several large warriors that had been standing around, drinking ale and talking, stopped and stared at them. They looked tense at the sight of Vegitsen warriors, but seeing Goku in the lead, their stances relaxed - just a little. Goku looked a little too much like someone that was known for his deadly temper.
The Vegitsen behind Goku did little to calm them either. One was clearly a relation to Nardon, the brother of Vegit, if he wasn't actually Nardon himself. The faces of both Vegit and Nardon were well known in these parts.
The other Vegitsen, although small, looked like a mean one. They did not let his size sway them into thinking he was a weakling. There were plenty of badgers in the woods just north of the settlement and although they were small creatures, they were the meanest animals around. This Vegitsen reminded them of a badger.
One warrior decided he would see what this scouting party wanted and walked up to Goku, nodding at him cautiously. He was little prepared for Goku's friendly, “Hi! I'm Kakarot.”
The three warriors gasped. “You… you're also named Kakarot?” The first warrior asked, turning to his friends for confirmation that he was asking the right question.
“Yeah, it seems so.” Goku smiled openly at them.
They looked at him a bit perplexed. Goku barreled on. “Is Raddoon here? Or Kakarotto? Are they in this camp?” Goku looked around and saw that they were in a pretty deserted stretch of the camp, golden firelight and camp fire smoke visible a bit further down the road.
“Any reason you want to see him with those two in tow?” The warrior asked, arching a brow. The warrior was tall and muscular, his head sort of squarish, yet still handsome. His head was topped with short, disheveled hair, with longer hair gathered at the back in a mid-sized ponytail. Even though he asked Goku a question full of suspicion, Goku found himself liking the Saiyan, his looks and manner of speaking signifying strength and dignity.
Goku held up his hand. “Yeah, the Vegitsen would like to talk peace. That's all.”
The warrior looked at Goku for a moment, a frown knitting his brows. “Well, I suppose if you are brave enough to broach such a subject, I'll take you to Kakarotto. But you can only speak with him. He doesn't allow others to talk to Raddoon.”
Goku absorbed the information and gave Nardon a questioning look. Nardon nodded.
“Ok!” Goku smiled at the warrior. “By the way, what's your name?”
The warrior smiled at the open friendliness of the stranger, despite himself, “My name is Tomaron. Well, let's get going.”
Tomaron nodded to his friends as he lead Goku, Nardon and Vegeta away. Tomaron's friends wordlessly decided that they liked this end of the camp much better, and didn't join him.
As they neared the blazing campfires they saw hundreds of Saiyan's sitting all about. They were eating, talking, laughing, a few sparred playfully, or they cuddled children on their laps. Men and women mixed equally.
As they neared the main camp fire, they passed a Radditsen couple in the throes of passion against a hut wall. Up further, a Saiyan male puked up the contents of his beer ridden stomach against a tree. It was a noisy camp, much more noisy than the Vegitsen camp, as it seemed that the drinking started here much earlier in the day. Vegeta wondered if it ever stopped, really.
Goku stared at all the Saiyans, a few of them resembling him. They, for the most part, seemed more average in build than in the Vegitsen camp. Some of the warriors in the Vegitsen camp seemed hulking, like Vegit himself. But here, they were more like Goku's height and build had been when he was in his early twenties.
Vegeta's hard eyes met curious stares, Vegeta laughing openly at those that tried to use intimidation against him. With satisfaction, he saw a few stares break away nervously from his own.
Under a large tent sat several Saiyans around a table. One man had a pretty woman in his lap. Her hair was short and her dark eyes impish. In a fuzzy voice she said to the man she sat on, “Hmm, Kakarotto, looks like you have visitors.”
The man turned his head to look at his visitors.
Goku, Vegeta and Nardon regarded him with a shocked stare.
He was Goku's twin.
Everything about him, size, hair, face, EVERYTHING, was exactly the same except for a long scar that ran down the side of his face and neck. It appeared to be a long, bubbling burn scar, but it did not take away from the man's good looks in the least.
He stared at Goku in equal fashion, noting the marked resemblance. Kakarotto then regarded the two Vegitsen behind Goku and recognized Nardon from paintings he had seen of him.
The woman on his lap openly stared at the visitors, a look of interest on her face. Kakarotto noticed her attention and wasn't too pleased.
“How about you leave for a little while, Pet?”
She looked annoyed, “But I want to see what they want?”
He simply gave her a look and she smirked, getting up. Her body was fluid and supple, her every move exuding sex. She smirked at the visitors and left, but not before she brushed Nardon's flank with her own suggestively.
Kakarotto didn't miss it but didn't let on that he was annoyed.
Vegeta noted Kakarotto's suppressed annoyance, but didn't let on that he caught it
Vegeta and Kakarotto's eyes met briefly. They both smirked at each other.
“Well, Cousin. What brings you here, with these two, ahem, visitors?”
Kakarotto sounded bored. His voice was deeper, and clearer than Goku's. In fact, Kakarotto sounded quite intelligent, sharp and sexy, and full of confidence.
Several other Saiyans that sat around watched with interest as the discussion got under way.
Tomaron nodded to Kakarotto and then took his leave, not wanting to stick around for any of the discussion. He feared that things wouldn't go well, Kakarotto's temper notoriously unstable.
As Tomaron took his leave, Kakarotto's eyes flickered to the side of Goku's neck taking a good look at something he had noticed from the start, while the others were distracted by Tomaron's leave taking. His eyes hardened ever so slightly. Kakarotto trailed his eyes over Nardon first, but saw no look of challenging recognition to meet his gaze on the young Saiyan's face. Kakarotto then turned his eyes on Vegeta, only to find the small warrior smiling at him devilishly. Kakarotto's eyes narrowed slightly at Vegeta, then he turned back to look at Goku.
Goku replied, “We would like to discuss a peace treaty between the Vegitsen and the Radditsen.”
Kakarotto just looked at Goku, not saying anything. Goku merely blinked at him.
Kakarotto broke the silence that was steadily becoming uncomfortable, other Saiyans around them quietly backing away.
“So, you speak for Vegitsen?”
Goku scratched his head. “Well, not really. We'd like to meet with you and Raddoon, but really Nardon is the one that should speak to you,” Goku said as he motioned to Nardon.
Nardon looked at Kakarotto and nodded in affirmation, his mouth a tight line sensing that this wasn't going too well already.
“But you represent them? You are here to broach the subject, start the conversation for them, correct?”
Goku nodded, perplexed at the question.
“I didn't hear you?” Kakarotto's voice grew hard.
Goku made a face in annoyance at the tone in Kakarotto's voice. “Yes.”
Vegeta took on a ready stance. Nardon sensed this and did the same.
“So, you let one of these dogs bite you on the neck like that, as big as you are, and now you are here to do their bidding?” Kakarotto grunted a derisive laugh. “Where's your pride, slut?”
Goku blinked. Then, he laughed heartily, shocking everyone but Vegeta in the tent. He even stunned Kakarotto by his genuine outburst of mirth.
Still laughing, Goku said, “I've been called a lot of things before, but never a slut!” Goku laughed further.
Kakarotto, though, didn't see the joke, especially when he was in a threatening mood. No one had ever laughed at him before. Kakarotto narrowed his eyes at the laughing idiot as he stood.
Goku sobered immediately and hardened his stare at Kakarotto.
The two faced off and everyone but Vegeta backed away.
