Chapter Thirteen

Vegeta shot awake and bolted up in bed. His face and body were covered with perspiration. His chest was heaving. He glanced around the dark room and found that he was the only one in it.

A dream? Yes, he had been dreaming. But of what? He couldn't remember.

He slid out of bed and went to the window. He gazed out at the winking stars and sighed. If it was just a silly dream, why was it bothering him so much?

His hands tightened. His body was telling him that something unfavorable had happened or was about to happen. He immediately thought of home.

He shook off the notion. If something had gone vastly wrong on Vegeta-sei they would contact him immediately.

He went back to his bed and crawled between the sheets. He stared up at the ceiling and told himself that it was just a stupid dream, but he couldn't seem to really convince himself of this.

He turned on his side. He would have to forget about this and train hard as Bulma had suggested to Radditz, Kakarot and him. The sooner Bulma could get her plan devised, the sooner they could all be rid of that lizard, Frieza. Killing him was a task Vegeta wanted to accomplish himself. And he knew it would be very satisfying.

Amara and Nappa had talked to many people. They were asked to retell what happened and how they found the King. After giving their statements they parted ways. Nappa went to his apartment and Amara went to the room Chi Chi and Gohan were staying in.

"They were asking me so many questions," Amara complained. "I felt like I was being interrogated as the King's murderer."

"Poor King Vegeta," Chi Chi said, stroking Gohan's hair while he slept. "Whom do you think would have done such a terrible thing?"

"I don't know," Amara said. "But they're working on it. They better find whoever it was and punish them."

"Punish how?" she asked.

Amara crossed her legs and leaned back in her chair. "An eye for an eye…"

"So then they will be executed?"

"I would imagine so," she said. "It might have been different if this was the death of a commoner, but a King…" She shook her head. "Whoever committed this crime was a coward and they better keep staying low if they know what's good for them."

Chi Chi watched Amara with interest. Gohan stirred in his sleep and she touched the side of his face and planted a gentle kiss on his forehead. His body became still as sleep overtook him again.

Amara smiled as she watched Chi Chi and her son. Chi Chi noticed her gaze and smiled back. "Where is your family, Amara?"

"My father works here in the palace as an advisor," she said. "And my mother…" She laughed. "She's probably at home."

"She doesn't worry about you?"

Amara laughed again. "No, she can't stand me."

"Why is that?"

"I am a first class Saiya-jin," Amara said, "from a prominent family. Women such as myself aren't supposed to have intimate relations with third class soldiers. It's practically a law and my mother, for one, completely agrees with it. She doesn't want to have a daughter who is messing around with soldiers and she told me if I wasn't going to abide by her rules, then she didn't want me as her daughter anymore."

Chi Chi's eyes widened. "That's horrible!"

Amara shrugged. "I'm glad to be free of her. I'm not a child anymore, I am my own woman and I don't give a damn what she wants for me. I'm sure my father knows about Radditz and me and he doesn't mind. He wouldn't go around talking about it and he would probably deny it if anyone asked because it might hurt his position as an advisor."

"You sure sacrificed a lot for Radditz," she said.

Amara nodded. "Yes, I suppose I did and so did he. I love him and I'm not going to give up on our relationship. If no one will authorize a mating ceremony for us, I will still remain at his side forever." She stood and went to the door. "That's why he has to come back alive. They all have to." She opened the door and spoke over her shoulder. "I haven't slept and it's all ready morning. I'll see you later, Chi."

"Good bye, Amara."

"We've been fighting pretty intensely lately," Kakarot said.

Radditz nodded in agreement.

"Think we're strong enough to beat Frieza?" he whispered close to his ear.

Radditz shoved him away. "Don't be an idiot. And be quiet someone might hear you."

Kakarot laughed. "You worry too much. Doesn't he, Vegeta?"

"I have to say I agree with him, Kakarot," Vegeta said. "Shut up!"

Kakarot sighed and continued walking down the hallway with them. They had just returned from claiming a planet for Frieza. Of course, the people didn't want to hand over their planet, so they had to fight them. Surprisingly, the inhabitants of the planet were quite strong. The three Saiya-jins were glad to have a challenge, but overcame the inhabitants.

A door farther down the hallway opened and Bulma stepped out. Vegeta looked up and opened his mouth to say something to her, but Frieza came out of the door a moment later.

Frieza trapped Bulma between the wall and his body. She looked surprised and he moved his face very close to hers. "You've been of great service to me Bulma."

She swallowed hard. "Thank you, sir."

He smiled and moved his hands to her back and lower. She gasped. "And you will be of much more service to me."

Vegeta frowned and was about to advance toward Frieza, but Radditz grabbed him. Kakarot took a step forward, moving heavily so that his boots made a sound on the floor.

Frieza turned toward them and stepped away from Bulma. Radditz released Vegeta when he was sure that he would stand in place.

"Finished with your mission?" he asked the Saiya-jins.

"Yes, Lord Frieza," Kakarot said.

"Good." Frieza took one more glance at Bulma before disappearing down the hallway.

Vegeta went over to Bulma and gripped her shoulders. "What was he doing to you? Did he hurt you?" His voice held anger.

She shook her head. "No, I'm all right."

"Has he done anything like this to you before?" he demanded.

"A few times," she said after a moment.

"Anything more than just that?"

"No!" she cried. "And please lower your voice, Vegeta. We're right outside the control room."

"You're mine," Vegeta growled, possessively into her ear. "I don't want him touching you. I'll kill him the next time he tries to lay a hand on you."

She touched his face, tentatively. "Vegeta, calm down."

"No, I will not calm down! I…" He was cut off when Bulma grabbed his face and kissed him.

His eyes widened at first. He closed them and placed his hands at her back, pulling her into him and deepening the kiss.

Radditz glanced at his brother. "Make sure no one is coming down the hallway. If these two get caught, we're dead."

Kakarot nodded.

Bulma broke the kiss and pulled back to look him in the eyes. "The plan is going to work. I was able to speak with my father."

"What exactly is the plan?"

"I can't tell," she said. "But you will find out soon enough. Everyone will."

He nodded and pulled her in for another kiss, but at the last moment he moved his lips to her neck. He kept moving down until he found the skin below her collarbone. He sucked the flesh into his mouth and Bulma shuddered against him.

After a moment, he pulled back. "You're mine."

She fingered her skin and sighed. "Another mark?"

He smiled and released her, to the sound of her laughter.

"Just keep being `loyal' to Frieza," she said, turning to leave. "We will be freed soon enough." She walked down the hallway and out of sight.

"Malem? Have you contacted the Prince?" Cole asked, walking into the room.

Malem looked at him. "Yes, hours ago."

"Have you found any leads in the King's murder?"

He frowned. "None yet."

"Nothing? What have you figured out then?" Cole asked. "Your men have been questioning people around the palace since last night."

He sighed and stood from the chair he was sitting in. "We have a list of a few people who were in the area where the King was about the time the murder occurred."

"And?"

"Those people are being further questioned."

"Who are they?"

He laughed. "I can't tell you that! I'm not allowed to discuss anything about the case with you."

"Who the hell put you in charge?"

"No one," he said. "I'm the one who stepped forward to help. You gave me the order to contact the Prince and I did. You didn't assign any tasks to anyone else, so I took charge. Do you have a problem with that?"

Cole grunted. "No, but there is one thing I would like to know. Is my daughter a suspect?"

He shook his head. "No, she wasn't in the palace in the time frame of the murder."

He nodded. "Have you confirmed that the King was poisoned?"

Malem narrowed his eyes. "You're pushing the limits. I'm only going to answer one more question."

Cole frowned at him.

"Yes, the King was indeed poisoned."

"Why don't you tell me one more thing, Malem? Are you a suspect? You came to the scene really quick when all the commotion started."

Malem threw down a few papers that were in his hands. "How dare you! I would never think to murder the King! I'll tell you this. You're a suspect!"

"Me? I wasn't in the area when…"

"That's not what a few witnesses say," Malem said, very matter-of-factly.

"You're a lunatic." Cole turned his back on him.

Malem laughed. "Say what you want, that doesn't take you off the suspect list."

Cole's shoulders tightened with anger. Malem came up beside him and placed his hand on his shoulder.

"Don't touch me," Cole hissed.

Malem smirked. "I would love to talk more, but I've got a speech to make." He started for the door.

"Speech?"

He half-turned. "Sure, the people of Vegeta-sei need someone to comfort them in this time of despair. I've prepared a nice speech discussing the King's death and our efforts to find the murderer." He shook his head. "This couldn't have come at a worse time. We're right in the middle of a revolution, but who knows, maybe this will take the people's mind off of it." He left the room.

"Hn! Cocky bastard," Cole said, leaving the room a moment after him.
