Chapter Ten

"Defiance and Bliss"

"Trunks," Alanna said finally, "I don't want to be in this room anymore. Can we go somewhere else?" He nodded and led Alanna out of the room. He swept his hand in the air and Alanna watched the water puddle dry and the glass move aside instantly. She blinked up at him curiously, but he only offered a wink in reply. Trunks stopped at Pan's door, peeking in. She was back in her own room where she belonged, sleeping. Alanna looked hurt and seemed to think he was checking in on her, so Trunks briefly explained what had happened. By the time he was done, they had arrived at Trunks' room. Alanna growled and clung to Trunks possessively. He chuckled and petted her hair.

Alanna looked up at him, sort of sadly. "Trunks...how is this ever going to work if Vegeta disapproves so strongly? He tends to get out of hand...what if he hurts someone?"

Trunks scowled. "He won't. Don't worry, I'll see to that." Alanna was quiet a moment.

"But Trunks, he still doesn't like it. Don't his comments bring you down at all?"

Trunks smiled slightly. "Alanna," he said softly, "I don't give a rat's ass what Father says, and that's the truth." He leaned forward and kissed her cutely.

Trunks was a happy pig that night.

Vegeta felt a surge in his son's life force. He knew what they were doing. His eyes narrowed. He started towards Trunks' room, he'd out a stop to this once and for all.

"Vegeta, please wait!"

He turned, already knowing who it was. "What do you want?" He asked shortly. "I'm rather busy!"

Shauna drew abreast of him, panting slightly. "I know what `business' you think you have to attend to, but please just let them be!" Vegeta glared at her, but she didn't back down. "Please," she pleaded quietly, "just leave them alone." Shauna took his hand and looked up at him pathetically. His eyes narrowed again; she was on thin ice now.

"What am I supposed to do?" He asked. Shauna didn't like the dangerous edge in his voice.

"You could...come for a walk with me." She shivered and dropped his

hand when he started to growl. "Never mind..." Shauna shrank back

meekly. "Do as you like then..." She turned and started to slink away.

Vegeta wondered why she looked so hurt. Why did it bother him? He wasn't supposed to care...was he?

"Hey...wait!" He called.

She didn't.

Vegeta jogged after her, falling into step with her. She turned away from him, moving sharply into an adjoining hall. Vegeta's step faltered, surprised. Had he really hurt her that badly? He padded after her but she turned down another hall. Vegeta raced ahead of her and stopped. When she tried to turn around, he put a hand on her shoulder. Shauna cast her eyes down, defeated.

Vegeta steeled himself. "I'm sorry." He half-choked.

It was hard, Shauna knew, to say something like that. She looked up at him.

"I am." His neutral expression never faltered, but his eyes flickered. He was sorry.

"What do you want?" Shauna asked.

Vegeta cocked his head. "A walk?" He asked, rather than stated, as though wondering if he was allowed to ask. Shauna studied him a moment, then nodded, smiling slightly, and headed for the nearest exit, Vegeta padding alongside her.

The sun rose as an orb of fiery red and orange the next morning, turning golden within the hour, chasing away the shadows. A portion of the sky was aglow with incandescent radiance. Trunks lay on his back with one arm behind his head. Alanna was curled up beside him, one hand and her cheek on his chest. He had his other hand on her waist, their tails curled around each other. Trunks watched the sun rise, silent and content.

At length, Alanna woke. She looked up at him and smiled. "Hi Trunks." She crooned and reached up to run her fingers through his hair.

He grinned. "Morning Snook." He gestured to the window where the sun was still rising amidst soft orange hues. Alanna watched as though in a trance.

"It's remarkable, isn't it? I mean, to think..." Trunks sort of trailed off.

"To think what?" Alanna pressed.

"Well..." Trunks looked, rather shyly, down at her. "It's remarkable to think it's almost as beautiful as you."

Alanna turned bright red and kissed his cheek. "You're too cute, Trunks."

He wrinkled his nose cutely and patted her. "It's still early, you should go back to sleep."

She nodded with a yawn, curled up, made sure Trunks was wrapped securely, then went back to sleep. Trunks looked out the window, felt the warmth of the sun on his face, felt the light wash over him, and felt his love breathe against him. This, he thought, is bliss.
