Chapter Twelve

"Trunks!"

"NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!" Trunks roared and sprung off the front step. Alanna watched as he leapt into the path of Vegeta's beam.

"Trunks!" She cried. He couldn't do this! He had nothing to do with it! But it was too late, and Trunks had made up his mind. The beam struck, and Trunks was thrown backwards, over Alanna's head. He went skidding across the grass, then stopped and didn't move. Alanna jumped up, looked at Trunks, gaping, then slapped Vegeta across the face as hard as she could. "You shot him!" She screamed. "You bastard, you SHOT TRUNKS!!!" She sobbed, tears streaming down her cheeks, and ran to him. She ignored Vegeta, who was standing in his spot still, shocked.

"Don't leave..."

His glazed eyes shifted slowly up to her. They showed no regret. What he had done, he meant more than words could describe.

"Let me see, Trunks." She pushed his jacket aside and lifted his shirt, which was dark and sticky. There was a pool of dark and slowly oozing blood on his chest and stomach. She couldn't see the wound. Alanna couldn't bear to see the blood anymore; she pulled his shirt back down. "You're alright, Trunks!" She pulled him closer with a hand on his cheek. "You'll be fine!"

Trunks sluggishly lifted a heavy hand and brushed shaking fingers against her cheek. "I...love you, Snook." He choked.

Alanna shook her head quickly. "Don't say goodbye, Trunks! You're alright!"

Trunks closed his eyes. Alanna was making this so hard. "Please Snook..." He pleaded as her tears splashed on his face. "Don't be sad..."

Alanna knew he was leaving her. She held him close as though protecting his life. She curled her tail around him. Alanna knew he would do the same if he had the strength. "Trunks..." She laid her cheek against his. "Come back to me, Trunks...come back."

He nodded slightly, his eyes closing again. His head fell to the side and his struggle for breath ceased. Alanna sat with him still, stroking his tail, rocking back and forth slowly as a cold wind rustled his hair.

Vegeta watched everything, frozen in shock. He'd shot his own son! He was a murderer of the worse kind. He'd killed his own son! He sensed someone behind him, then Shauna stepped up beside him. Alanna didn't see her; she was petting Trunks' hair and crying, her back to them.

"I...killed him..." Vegeta said, and Shauna was stunned to see that he was blinking rapidly.

"You did..." She couldn't comfort him; it was his fault.

"I've got to bring him back..." Vegeta said slowly. "It's up to me to fix this. I'll use the dragonballs."

Shauna noticed that tears were sliding down his cheeks. "But Vegeta," Shauna said quietly, "they were just used. It'll be a year."

Vegeta hung his head, eyes closed. They both felt the same, that this was his punishment.

Weeks passed and Alanna lost her desire to eat. She spent most of her time alone in her room, she didn't speak to anyone. Shauna took to visiting Vegeta again. At first, they didn't speak much. Sometimes Shauna would cry. Over time, she expressed her worries about Alanna.

Vegeta sat and listened to her. One day, when she did cry, he put a tentative hand on her shoulder. He watched her cry a while, then turn to him, her eyes wet but curious.

He cast his eyes down. "I feel so horrible...I won't ever forgive myself...it won't stop hurting."

For the second time ever, Shauna saw him cry. She leaned over, wiped his eyes, and rested her cheek on his shoulder.

"I...I miss him..." Vegeta admitted.

"I know." Shauna said quietly. "He'll be back." She pointed out.

"Yes but...will he forgive me? I know my son is forgiving but...no, he'll hate me forever." Vegeta hung his head.

"Vegeta, no one could hate you forever." Shauna kissed his cheek reassuringly.
