Chapter One
"Autumn"
It was relatively silent that day at Capsule Corp. At long last, there was no screaming or slamming of doors or dishes. (Vegeta had finally gotten so fed up with the Big Bad Bitch that he'd pointed a finger and blasted her into oblivion. Ah, sweet silence.) Trunks and Alanna were discussing this, and whatever else came to mind, in the library where they had been looking for something to read. "So what's it like to be nag-free?" Alanna asked Trunks. He looked around and sighed. "It's the best. If I wanted, I could hang my socks on every lamp." He grinned. "But I'm better than that, right...Pookie?" Alanna shook her head, amused. Trunks had convinced himself she needed a nickname and had been trying to think of one ever since. "It's Alanna, Trunks. Just Alanna. Say it with me now, Alanna!" Trunks was silent. He wrinkled his nose, scowled determinedly and padded into the hall, new book in hand. Alanna shook her head again and sat down to read.
The leaves were changing colour and starting to fall, but the beautiful view of the multicoloured forest from his room gave Trunks no solace. He paced his room, racking his brain. Alanna's birthday was creeping up on him, what was he to do? If he didn't do this right, he was screwed! He paused, looking out the window, tapping his foot, perplexed. What to do, what to do?
In many weeks' time, the day after Alanna's birthday had come. Trunks hadn't said or done anything, in fact, he hadn't been seen all that day. She thought he had forgotten or run off with Pan. Alanna was curled up on her bed. There was a quiet knock at the door and, speak of the devil, the little turd walked in. Alanna considered throwing him out but...he just looked so cute!
He slunk forward and sat on the floor beside the bed. He curled his brown Saiyan tail between his legs meekly and looked up apologetically. "I'm sorry I'm late," he said timidly, "but I had to get it just right." Alanna looked at him quizzically. "Get what right?" she asked. Trunks figured she wasn't mad and sat up a bit. He turned light pink and reached into his jacket pocket. He pulled out a small maroon, velvet box. "Your birthday present. You didn't think I forgot, did you?" Alanna shook her head. "No...no, of course not!" Trunks seemed slightly less nervous and handed the box to her. She smiled a little and opened it.
Inside was a gold chain with the most beautiful pendant Alanna had ever seen. It was a large, silver hoop. Inside was a silver unicorn rearing, horn pointing, as though in salute, to a ruby red moon. The sky was of dark sapphire with sparkling diamond stars. The ground in the scene was black opal with veins of yellow, green and blue. Alanna gasped breathlessly. "Oh my God, Trunks!" He smiled shyly. "It's way too much!"
"Of course it's not...Twinkles." Alanna laughed and Trunks turned bright red. Guess that was a pretty bad one, he thought. Trunks put the chain around her neck and opened his mouth, but at that very moment, Vegeta hollered loudly, proclaiming that Trunks wasn't keeping up with his training and demanding he come start. Trunks sighed and rose. "Guess I'd better go. Happy birthday...uh..." He shrugged. "Guess I'm having a brain fart because of that last attempt. Sleep well." Night had, indeed, come. He turned, brushing his fingertips against her cheek. He left. She pressed her hand to her cheek. It was warm. She shook her head sharply. Just tired, that's all...I'm imagining things. By the time she had tucked herself in and was almost asleep, she had nearly convinced herself...nearly.
The weeks continued on, Trunks training when he was told, but he really didn't need to. He was more than strong enough to handle whatever might happen. He also continued his quest for a nickname, but nothing seemed to suit Alanna. Before anyone had even thought about it, Halloween was only a day away. "Are you going out tomorrow?" Trunks asked Alanna. She nodded. "Of course! Free candy!" Alanna skipped around the room.
Trunks laughed. "May I come with you?"
This gave Alanna reason to pause. "Aren't you a little old for trick-or-treating?" Though she added swiftly, seeing his frown, "it doesn't matter to me though, you can come if you want."
Trunks smiled and grabbed her arm, skipping around the room.
"What the Hell are you two doing?" A gruff voice asked from the doorway. Trunks grinned sheepishly. "Just celebrating trick-or-treating, Dad." Vegeta scoffed. "Halloween, stupid child's holiday." He stalked off, muttering darkly.
Trunks shook his head. "Anyway, what are you going to go as...Snubbles?" Alanna doubled over laughing and Trunks turned bright red. "Uhm...guess I'm getting worse at this, eh?" He asked rhetorically. When Alanna was able to speak again, she said, "you'll just have to wait and see. And if you're coming, you'd better find something."
Trunks nodded. "Yeah...right." He didn't add another nickname this time. He shuffled off.
Finally the sky darkened. Alanna waited in the front hall. "Trunks!" she yelled, "come on, we're losing candy by the minute!"
Trunks leapt suddenly to the floor in front of her, cat-like, scaring the bejeezes out of her. Alanna jumped back with a yell. "Trunks!!!"
He blinked innocently. "Yes?"
"Where have you been?"
He cocked his head. "Up there for the past ten minutes, waiting for you. And you...look...WOW!" He stood suddenly, looking her up and down. Alanna smiled and did a small spin. She wore a blue sparkly dress and a tiara that matched her sparkling half Saiyan tail, which glittered like a thousand diamonds, floating proudly behind her like a banner. "I'm a Saiyan princess, Trunks, what do you think?"
Trunks' mouth hung open. "Wow," he croaked, "pretty."
This time Alanna turned bright red. "Well you're looking pretty nice there yourself." Trunks drew himself up proudly. He was done up all in black, loose, soft material. She couldn't be sure what it was exactly; she guessed pants and a long-sleeved shirt. He had two swords on his back, a black belt with a dagger, black gloves and black boots with soft, silent bottoms and a piece of material covering the bottom half of his face. He noticed her looking at it and pulled it up, completing his mysterious ninja look.
"Trunks," Alanna said quietly, "I'm sorry, but you look HOT!" Trunks grinned and opened the door. "Shall we?"
Trunks skipped down the road towards the first house. "That's not very ninja-like." Alanna pointed out.
Trunks paused, then said, "just testing you. Well done, Grasshopper." He bowed slightly, then stalked forward, slinking, almost invisible in the darkness. Alanna nodded in approval, proud for some reason. As they approached the first house, Trunks asked, "can I say trick or treat for this one? Plleeeaaassee?"
Alanna laughed, but felt sad. Poor guy had probably never been out for Halloween before. "Sure, Trunks." She agreed. Trunks smiled and hurried up the steps. He extended a gloved finger and rung the bell. The door opened and Trunks was silent a moment, then sang, "We can dance! We can dance!" Alanna fell right off the porch laughing. The lady at the door laughed as well and gave Trunks extra candy for being so amusing. It seemed to Trunks that Alanna was unable to walk so he scooped her up and marched to the next house. "I'm alright now, Trunks." Alanna smiled. Trunks waited a moment to make sure she was okay, then set her down. "I think I'd better do the next one, Trunks." Alanna grinned.
Trunks looked at his feet sheepishly. "Well," he said timidly, "maybe we could say it together?" He paused, shifting his weight from foot to foot as though it was a question of great importance upon which rested the direction of the rest of his life. "That is," he added hastily, "if you want to...you can say it yourself...if you want...you don't have to...just because I asked...I mean it's not like I'm saying y-"
"Trunks!" Alanna interrupted loudly. He flinched. "Trunks, you're rambling." He shrank down and pulled his half mask up, hiding. Alanna shook her head, grabbed his wrist and pulled it and the mask back down. His cheeks were pink and he looked sheepish. "It's alright, Trunks," she laughed, "we'll say it together." She took the next steps in a bound and rung the bell. Alanna felt the aura in the air that often told her that Trunks was near. "Trick or treat!" They chorused together.
The night went well and Trunks and Alanna got a huge horde of candy, Trunks eventually carrying all the heavy bags (with ease). When they returned home, they ate a little of it. Trunks insisted on checking her candy, making sure she didn't eat too much, and supervising her while she brushed her teeth. He even went so far as to send her back to make sure she'd done them properly. She shook her head. "Goodnight, Trunks." She finally got to say, hurrying to her room before Trunks could tell her to brush her teeth again or something. Trunks called a goodnight, and then padded off to bed.
This was worse than he thought. Why did his son always have to come off so damn charming?! Must've gotten it from his father. Vegeta thought with a smirk. But back to the problem...him...her...He scowled and moved off down the hall.
