Chapter 2 - Not Fast Enough

Vegeta paced. Even as Goku, Chichi, who was carrying a basket of food, and Goten walked into the waiting room, Vegeta continued to pace. Trunks sat motionlessly in the corner of the room while his sister sat in a chair staring at a tiny crack in the wall. Goten sauntered over to Trunks and plopped down on a chair next to him. Goku's stomach grumbled and he gave Chichi an embarrassed look. I just fed that baka dinner! How could he be hungry? Shaking her head, Chichi walked away from the hungry Saiyan, who was staring at her basket, and over to the pacing one. She gently placed a hand on his shoulder, which he promptly brushed off.

"I don't need your sympathy, woman," he snapped.

Chichi tried to keep her anger in check as she replied to the arrogant Prince, "Dammit, Vegeta. I wasn't trying to give you my sympathy, I was only trying to get you to sit down before you walk a hole into this floor."

He shrugged, muttered something about a `stupid baka woman', and continued to pace.

She slammed her hand down onto a nearby table causing everybody in the room, except Vegeta, to jump. "You know what, Vegeta? A bastard like you does not deserve the food that I cooked. Here Goku," she said handing her husband the basket of food, "you're still hungry, you can have it."

Vegeta glared at Goku as he started to stuff the food from the basket into his mouth. He turned away from the delicious-looking food, trying to keep his hunger in check. Bra and Trunks watched their father as he started pacing again and shook their heads. When is he ever going to get over his damn pride? Bra wondered.

Goku watched Vegeta. He had seen how the proud Saiyan had looked at him: he was hungry. He picked up some of the remaining pastries and walked over to Vegeta. As he held out his hands, packed with the pastries, to Vegeta, he stormed past Goku and headed for the door.

Vegeta threw open the door, tearing it off of its hinges, dropped the door on the floor, and walked out of the waiting room. He looked both ways before deciding to take the right hallway. When he was out of sight of the waiting room, a doctor walked up to him.

"Mr. Briefs?" he questioned.

"No," Vegeta stated flatly.

"Do you happen to know where I could find the husband of the Mrs. Bulma Briefs?" the doctor asked.

"Yes, that's me."

"Then wouldn't that make you Mr. Briefs?"

"No. I am Prince Vegeta of the planet Vegetasei."

The doctor rolled his eyes. "I'm sorry I asked. Anyway, about your wife. The injuries that she sustained are horrific. We were able to stop the bleeding, but she had such severe trauma to her head that she slipped into a coma. Sir, she could possibly die."

Vegeta's anger got the best of him and he powered up. The doctor stepped away from the enraged Saiyan as Goku rushed out of the waiting room at the sudden increase of ki. He phased in front of the doctor, grabbing Vegeta, trying to get him to calm down. Vegeta kept increasing his power, which forced Goku to use his instant transmission to get them out of the hospital before Vegeta destroyed it.

They reappeared outside of the hospital. Goku kept his arms wrapped around the angry Saiyan and took off, heading for some remote area where he promptly released Vegeta.

"Why the hell did you do that Kakkarot?" Vegeta yelled screamed powering up into his Super Saiyan form.

Goku in turn powered up. "You were about to destroy the hospital. You cannot power up in a place like that, you could have killed Bulma and a lot of other people."

He glared at him and balled his fists together, hoping for a way to vent his frustrations out on the Saiyan in front of him. "Then while we're out here, I'll kill you."

Hours passed and day turned to night as the two Super Saiyans fought. Goku, however, kept his power down somewhat to allow Vegeta to take out his rage on him. Vegeta was getting frustrated. No matter how hard he tried, he could still not defeat the third class baka Saiyan. Dammit, Kakkarot! Why can I never beat you? Suddenly Goku disappeared and Vegeta could not sense his ki anymore.

"Kakkarot! You coward! How dare you run away from our fight!" he screamed as he shot a ki ball into a nearby plateau, causing it to explode.

Vegeta reached out to find Bulma's tiny ki in order to fly back to the hospital. He blasted off into the starry night sky. Flying by himself, the time alone allowed him to reminisce on what had happened. Although he did not want to admit it to himself, he knew deep inside that it was his fault that she was hurt. He pushed himself too far in the gravity room and she ended up getting hurt.

He blasted through the hospital doors to the closest doctor, who he grabbed. "Where is Bulma Briefs?"

The nervous doctor pointed down the hallway and stuttered, "D…down th…that way, s…sir. Room 122."

Vegeta dropped the unlucky doctor and flew down the hall to her hospital room. He let himself into the darkened room. He stood staring at her peaceful form. There was no sign of blood on her body, just plenty of bandages wrapped around her.

He pulled one of the chairs next to the bed and took her hand. Don't die woman. You'll destroy my life, he thought bitterly. He rested his forehead upon the soft sheets of the hospital bed.

Still gripping her hand, Vegeta was lulled into a deep, dreamless sleep by the continued beeps of her heartbeat. As he slept he muttered, "I wasn't fast enough," and did not notice the line go flat.
