Chapter Three: Ruwalk the Relationship Counselor

===============================================================< /div>

...And there they were. Did Thatz even realize how cruel he was being? Rune's blood ran cold.

Rath and Thatz sat side by side, talking and laughing whilst stuffing their faces. As Rune watched, Rath leaned over and kissed Thatz on the cheek; the former thief giggled girlishly and swatted at him, though it was obvious that he didn't really mind. They had been public for about a week now, so nobody in the dining hall commented on this type of behavior.

Distinctly p.o.ed, the elf selected a seat that was somewhat isolated from the other castle members, and waited while he was served. He gave all his attention to his food in order to keep from staring at Rath and Thatz, so he was scared half to death when Ruwalk and Alfeegi, the other resident happy couple, sat down next to him.

Ruwalk had his arm wrapped around Alfeegi's neck, causing him to blush and sputter quite a lot. The former of the two was snickering. "You really must get yourself a boyfriend, Rune," he commented, as his own finally escaped and whapped him on the head. "They're so much fun!"

Oops. Rune abruptly stood, picking up his plate. "Gee, I'll have to keep that in mind," he snapped, and pointedly moved to another seat where he could sulk properly.

Ruwalk traded looks with his koi. "What'd I do?"

Alfeegi whapped him on the head again. "Isn't it obvious?"

A few minutes later, Rune was joined by the two officers a second time. He scowled, prepared to yell their heads off.

"Sorry," Ruwalk said sheepishly. Rune blinked. "I was just kidding around; I didn't mean to imply that I though you liked men or anything."

The scowl was back; anger rather than common sense prompted Rune to say, "That wasn't the problem!"

Ruwalk stared at him incredulously. "Then you... do like men?" he asked innocently. Alfeegi conked him again.

But to their surprise, Rune hissed, quietly enough that no one else could hear, "So what if I do? But apparently I'm not good enough to keep one!"

And he stormed off again, this time managing to eat the rest of his meal in peace.

But the peace didn't last. Because as soon as he finished, two pairs of hands came to rest on his shoulders.

"We need to talk," Ruwalk said firmly, and with Alfeegi's assistance he guided the protesting elf out of the dining hall and into a vacant room.

"Alright, who did you break up with?" Ruwalk demanded, as soon as they had shut the door.

Rune sputtered incoherently. "No one!" he finally chocked out, deciding that back-tracking was best.

Alfeegi rolled his eyes. "Oh, don't be a baby; spit it out."

Rune gaped at him. `He... scares me...' "Fine, ok, I did break up with someone, but it was a long time ago and I don't want to talk about it!" he said all in a rush, and made for the door.

Ruwalk grabbed the back of his shirt and sat him down in the nearest chair calmly. "If it happened a long time ago, then why are you upset about it now?"

Rune glared, knowing there was no escape. "I just am. I don't want to talk about it!"

Ruwalk pulled up another chair, sitting down too. "Rune, you know you can talk to me," he said seriously. "If there's something bothering you, I'd like to do anything I can to help."

Rune avoided his eyes, feeling awkward now. Yeah, he should trust him, but this was too personal. "I really don't want to talk about it," he muttered, not meeting the other's eyes.

"It was Thatz, wasn't it?" Alfeegi said suddenly.

Rune looked at him sharply. "What? I mean, no! I mean... okay, fine, yes. Please don't tell anybody. How did you find out, anyway?"

He shrugged, as if it was perfectly obvious. "Well, I figured it must be him or Rath; that was the only thing I could think of that would explain how you could be so upset over a break-up that happened a long time ago, since they just got together. Then I remembered that you two always used to spend a lot of time together in the gardens, but that you'd stopped lately; I hadn't thought anything of it until now."

Rune sweatdropped, momentarily disturbed by Alfeegi's knowledge of where people liked to hang out. Then he sighed. "Okay, so now you know. Can I go?"

Ruwalk shook his head enthusiastically. "No! I said I was going to come up with a way to help make you feel better, and I'm going to."

Rune rolled his eyes. "Really, it's okay; you don't need to bother."

But Ruwalk just shook his head again. "Let's see... Oh, I know! How about I set you up with somebody? The three of us could go to a bar, and-"

Alfeegi conked him once again. "I don't think that's a good place to pick up a suitable boyfriend!"

Ruwalk rubbed his head. "Would you stop that?! I'm going to have a bruise."

Rune was trying hard not to laugh. "As... interesting as the suggestion is, I have to agree with Alfeegi," he admitted. "But if it's any consolation, I think that just listening to you two has cheered me up a little."

But Ruwalk wasn't paying attention. "Can I ask you something?" he asked seriously. Rune shrugged. "I know you like Thatz... Is there any chance that you think Rath is hot as well?"

Rune almost fell out of his chair, and even Alfeegi sweatdropped. "W-what are you saying?" he demanded.

"Well?" Ruwalk prodded.

Rune shook his head. "I-I don't know; I've never exactly thought about it! I... I suppose he's sort of cute, but he's awfully strange..."

The black-haired officer beamed. "`Sort of cute,' huh? Well there you go then; I think you should try for a threesome!"

Alfeegi choked, and Rune looked faint. "Excuse me?!" Rune managed to get out.

"How long have we been together?" Alfeegi asked, sounding dazed.

"Um... Wow, I guess it's been almost three years now, huh?"

The other officer scowled. "Yes it has been; our anniversary's coming up soon, not that you need any reminding, I'm sure." Ruwalk visibly paled. "But anyway, I never knew you were so... so... sick-minded!"

"What's wrong with a threesome?" he asked sweetly.

Rune grimaced, feeling rather akin to Alfeegi at the moment. "You know, regardless of whether it bothers me or not, there's also the other two to consider," he pointed out. "Thatz might still like me - I broke up with him, after all - but who knows about Rath? And of course they'd probably think I was perverted for even suggesting that all three of us... well, you know..."

Ruwalk shrugged. "Well, it's just something to keep in mind. And of course, the bar idea is still open - ow, Alfeegi, would you stop that?!"

Rune grinned a little as he left. Well, they hadn't really helped that much - threesome? No way! - but they had managed to cheer him up some. He chuckled softly as he made his way to the gardens to relax for a while. What a funny thing to say, asking if he thought Rath was hot or not...

A/N: Hmm, why are all the chapters so short? Maybe the next one will be longer... Hey, it's not my fault; I wrote this sometime in August! I think! Eh... [grin] Y'know, I don't even know why I'm so weirdly hyperish right now; what did I eat? Maybe it's because I'm so close to finally having all my stories reposted... Oh, and did I mention that, despite the fact that I'm posting a whole bunch of chapters at once, I wouldn't think you were weird in any way if you just *happened* to want to review each of them... [huuuuge grin]
