Chapter Five: Ruwalk the Relationship Counselor PART TWO

===============================================================

Rune practically had to drag Thatz the whole way to Ruwalk's room. "I really don't want to do this," he complained, for about the millionth time.

Rune glared, turning to face him. "Why not? Are you that ashamed about what you did?" 'Please say no...'

He winced. "No! It's just, well... I dunno. I love Rath. But I'm... I'm still in love with you too. It's already complicated enough; I'd rather not involve too many more people."

He tried not to smile too hugely. `I'm still in love with you too...' It's not like it was really such a good thing; that was what was screwing everything up, after all... Okay, okay, so it was a good thing. Really good. "Well, Ruwalk is already involved. And hopefully he can give us some advice! Because, let's face it, we need some..."

Thatz bit his lower lip nervously. 'I still don't wanna...' "Yeah, you're right... But what if he's 'busy' with Alfeegi or something?"

He couldn't help it; he just had to giggle. "Oh, like whatever they could possibly be doing would be any worse than what we've done?"

Thatz smiled slightly. Well, whether he was doing the right thing or not, he had to admit that it was nice to see Rune happy for a little while...

Unfortunately, he had been right when he speculated the Ruwalk might be 'busy.' Rune sweatdropped, listening to the sounds coming from the other side of the secretary's door. "I feel somehow very bad for listening to this," he commented.

Thatz immediately snapped himself out of his hentai daze. "Um, yeah, me too," he agreed, sweatdropping too now. "Eh... D'ya think we should knock?"

Rune shuddered. "I guess..." He rapped hesitantly on the door.

There was a strange squeaking sort of sound, and a crash. After a moment a very disheveled Ruwalk stuck his head around the doorframe; Alfeegi's head appear above his. Both were glaring.

"What?" Alfeegi snapped, bringing attention to the fact that he was a bit out of breath.

Rune blanched. "Um, well, I, we... We can come back later!"

Thatz smirked grimly, grabbing his arm as he tried to flee. "Oh, no you don't. You wanted advice, go get advice." The elf shot him a look that clearly said, 'traitor.'

Ruwalk arched an eyebrow. "Oh, you need advice, Rune? Well, I'd be happy to - ow! What was that for?" he demanded, rubbing his suddenly sore head. Alfeegi scowled at him. "...Oh."

Thatz's smirk faltered as Alfeegi turned his attention to him, his expression hinting at something along the lines of, 'you're next.' The officer opened his mouth, at the same time as Thatz was beginning to realize that maybe he didn't want to be here after all, but before Alfeegi could speak Ruwalk winked at the two of them, and dragged his koi back into the room.

Rune sweatdropped some more. "Well, he sure changed his mind fast," he commented, but it sounded like he might be wrong. Instead of the... previous sounds... they could now hear what sounded like a hushed argument. And after a moment Ruwalk called out for them to hold on.

A few minutes later, the door opened again. Now the two knights understood why they had been asked to hold on; Alfeegi and Ruwalk looked at least a little neater now.

"Come in," Ruwalk said warmly.

"Thank you," Rune replied, just a tad nervously. Alfeegi looked moody, but he didn't try to stop them.

Thankfully, the room was also neat. Apparently the couple had also taken the time to clean up any... mess... their activities might have created. Rune was having a hard time keeping from going red.

"So, what's the problem?" Ruwalk sat down and casually gestured for them to do the same. He glanced curiously at Thatz, then turned his attention to Rune. "Did you take my advice, Rune?"

Rune gave up the losing battle against blushing at this point. "No," he said hurriedly, before Thatz could even ask. "Ruwalk... Everything's really messed up right now. I like Thatz, and Thatz like Rath. But it turns out..." He paused to smile a little at the former thief. "It turns out that he still likes me too. And the worst part is, we were kind of, hem, kissing? And Rath walked in, and, well, he ran off again before we could even talk to him... What should we do?"

Ruwalk ran a hand through his hair. "Hmm, that is bad... Y'know, you should really go to Cernozura for this kind of thing. She's a girl; romantic issues come naturally to them... Ow, Alfeegi! What was that for? I was complimenting you! OW!"

Rune instinctively edged away from them, fearing for their sanity. "The thing is, we really don't want anyone finding out about this right now..."

Ruwalk glowered lightly at his koi, before continuing. "Well, I'll see what I can do," he amended. "It might take me a while to come up with anything good. Right now all I can offer you is that other idea..."

While Rune was busy blushing again, Thatz spoke up. "What's this idea you keep talking about, huh?"

Alfeegi rolled his eyes, still peeved. "You don't want to know."

Ruwalk looked mock-hurt. "Oh, it's not that bad. I just suggested a three-some, that's all."

And while Rune was busy sputtering, Thatz got an evil glint in his eyes. "You know, that's not actually such a bad idea... Ow!"

Rune scowled, massaging his knuckles. Ouch, he was out of practice. "It most certainly is!" he snapped.

Thatz winced. 'My poor head...' "Yeah, I suppose," he said reluctantly. "I mean, you don't like Rath like that, and vice versa..."

"Yeah, I guess not," Rune said, trying not to think about earlier that day in the gardens...

Thatz shot him a strange look, but before he could say anything Ruwalk spoke up again. "I'm sorry I couldn't come up with anything," he said sympathetically. "You should talk to Rath about it, I guess, and see if you can work anything out. But, erm, I'd wait until morning. Give him a chance to cool off. And when all else fails, get him drunk. It always works." Alfeegi just groaned, deciding that it wasn't worth it.

Rune stood up. "Thank you for talking to us," he said resignedly. "Sorry we, uh, bothered you... Good night."

"See you in the morning," Ruwalk replied, watching them go out the door.

On impulse, Alfeegi whapped him on the head again.

Ruwalk moaned. "What did I do now?!"

Alfeegi slipped onto his lap, smiling. "You let them in, baka." And he kissed him.

===============================================================

Thatz looked up at the stars, arms resting on the castle wall. They had decided to take the scenic route back to their rooms, which involved crossing an outdoor walkway. The night air was cool and soothing, with just enough of a light breeze to carry up the scent of flowers blooming in the gardens. He sighed. "This is way too confusing," he complained, half to himself.

Rune smiled slightly, joining him. "Yeah... But it certainly keeps things interesting."

Thatz arched an eyebrow, glancing at him. "Huh. I always thought of you as more of a work-a-holic-who-wishes-he-didn't-have-to-work-so-hard type."

The elf chuckled. "Maybe I'm learning something from all this."

Then Thatz sighed again. "Rune, I..."

"Hm?"

Thatz kissed him.

It was a tender sort of kiss, but also one filled with desperate need brought on by the knowledge that, depending on what choices they made, it could be their last. And forbidden fruit always tastes better, anyway. When they pulled apart, Thatz refused to look Rune in the eye. "Sorry; it's just, you're so..." He was muttering to begin with; his voice trailed off.

Rune winced. He knew why he was apologizing, though there was no need, not to him. Thatz should be apologizing to Rath, not him. He wanted this just as bad as Thatz did, wanted to feel his lips all over him instead of just in a little kiss... He was the one who should be apologizing.

However, there was a bit of reason behind it. With every kiss, it felt like they were getting deeper in to this, that the damage was becoming more irreversible... Apparently Thatz felt the same way.

"Thatz?" Rune asked suddenly. Finally the former thief made eye contact, giving him a questioning look. "Do you think Rath has calmed down enough yet? I know Ruwalk's probably right, about giving him until morning to cool off, but I just don't want to go to bed knowing how mad he must be at me..." It was the truth, too; he found himself surprisingly worried about the Fire Knight.

Thatz scratched his head thoughtfully. 'Is Rath ever really calm?' Out loud, he said, "Well, we never really know until we try, right? If he's still pissy we can try talking to him tomorrow."

Rune nodded gratefully, and together they continued to the wing where the three Knights' rooms were.

===============================================================

Rath stared through heavy-lidded eyes at his cup. Hmm... He needed a refill. The only problem was... he couldn't remember where the bottle was... He was already too drunk to remember much...

There was a hesitant knock on the door. He made some sort of non-word sound of confirmation, the best he could manage at the moment. Someone, blonde, who looked awfully familiar - wait, Rune, yeah - stuck his head through the door.

"Um... Can Thatz and I come in for a minute?" Rath just blinked at him. After pausing for a moment he did, followed by the other Knight.

Thatz took one look at him, and moaned. "Are you drunk, Rath?" he demanded.

Rath beamed, finally latching on to something he could understand. "Yup! Did you guy want a drink too? I can't seem to find the bottle..."

Thatz facepalmed, and grabbed Rune's arm. "Come on, let's go; he probably won't even remember anything we say if we try to talk to him now."

But Rune held back. Thatz shot him a look that said, 'it's not worth it,' but Rune was too busy staring at his feet to notice. "Rath, I... I'm sorry," he blurted. "About earlier..." He winced. How articulate. He was about to start over, but the words stuck in his throat when he looked up at Rath.

He had stood, and his expression had changed completely. "If you were really sorry you wouldn't have done it in the first place," he hissed, with disturbing clarity for a drunk man. "How could... I... Why did you two even break up in the first place if you still like each other so much?!" he exploded.

Thatz winced, and grabbed the shocked elf's arm again. "I think we should really go. We'll try again tomorrow..."

Rath rounded on him. "And you..." His eyes narrowed further. "What do you see in him, anyway? He looks like a stupid girl!"

Thatz scowled, but didn't reply. He wasn't going to let him get to him... it was the drink that was talking... But just as he was about to bodily remove Rune from the room, Rath grabbed his other arm. And pulled him in to a bruising kiss.

For a moment Rune was too shocked to move. He was still getting over Rath's sudden outburst. But finally, he woke up. Rath tasted overwhelmingly of alcohol... He shoved him away, sputtering. Thatz's mouth was hanging open.

Rath shrugged, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. "Well, I guess I see," he said begrudgingly. "He is a good kisser..."

Thatz shot him one last disgusted look, and finally dragged Rune back in to the hall.

===============================================================

Thatz walked Rune to his room at the other end of the long hall. They stood outside the door, neither wanting to say good night, neither sure what to else *to* say.

"Sorry about that," Thatz said gruffly. "I'd forgotten how... how *drunk* Rath gets when he's drunk."

Rune grinned a little at that. "It's not your fault; you said we should go. It was my idea to come in the first place, too."

"But still..." Thatz sighed. "I can't believe what a jerk he was being! I know he had every right to be mad, but if he'd actually give us a chance to explain instead of trying to forget about it with beer..."

Rune's expression softened, and to Thatz's surprise he pulled him in to a quick kiss. "Let's just go to bed," he said gently. "Everything will be better in the morning; you'll see. Good night." And before Thatz had time for anything more than a muttered 'good night' himself, Rune went in his room and closed the door behind him.

Once inside he sighed, leaning again the wall. 'Good bye...'
