Chapter One
(Rath's POV)
I groaned as I felt someone lightly shake my arm. "Rath," They whispered. "Rath, are you awake?"
I must have dozed off while I was crying. I opened my eyes and found myself looking up into Kai-stern's own concerned ones. "I am now," I replied as I sat up on my bed.
"Is something wrong?" He asked, sitting down beside me.
I sighed. "Yes, there is," I replied, not meeting his eyes.
He put a hand on my arm. "You can tell me, Rath. I saw you run into your room. You looked like you were about to cry."
"...It's Rune...and Thatz," I said, looking down at my hands.
He nodded, signifying that I could continue.
"This may sound selfish, but I don't like it that they're together," I said, finally voicing my thoughts since I returned to the castle.
"Why does that bother you?" Kai-stern asked.
"...Well, to tell the truth...I loved Thatz, I still do. And Rune, he was my best friend. And now they're together," I spilled the truth to the man sitting next to me as fresh tears started to form in my eyes.
Kai-stern moved closer to me and reached a hand up, wiping the tears from my face. "I'm sorry, Rath...but that's what happens. If you don't step in and tell the one you love that you love them in time...someone else does."
I turned to face him and fell into his arms, putting my arms around his neck as I sobbed into his shoulder. I swear, Kai-stern was like the older brother I never had.
He patted my back comfortingly. "Are you gonna come and eat now?" He asked.
I moved away from him and nodded, wiping my face dry.

The dining hall was crowded now as I sat down where I was before.
Rune glanced up at me before looking back at his food, frowning.
I didn't scowl, glare, or even frown back at him. I should be happy for him and Thatz, I decided.
I picked up my fork and was about to start eating again, when I felt someone's gaze on me. I looked up from my food and my eyes locked with Thatz's worried ones.
He quickly looked down and started eating. Rune must have told him what happened.

By the time I was done with my meal, it was time for the party to start. I got up from the table as the band in the other room, the ball room, started playing Irish jigs and what not...and I still wondered what an Irish was.
Rune and Thatz got up and rushed to the ball room. Of course, I thought, they were going to dance together. I didn't have anyone to dance with...Lykouleon had Raseleane, Ruwalk had Alfeegi, Kai-stern and Tetheus were single, but Kai was like a brother to me and Tetheus was too much of a serious hard ass, and then there was Rune and Thatz, a happy couple. I clenched my fist. This feeling good for them thing wasn't working. Last there was Cesia, the ex-yokai, and I really didn't want to dance with her.
I walked into the room after them and sat down on a stool in the corner of the room, alone.
After about a half-hour of watching everyone glide across the dance floor, I couldn't take it anymore. I got up, deciding that I hated St. Patrick's Day, and made my way back down the hall, through the dining hall, entrance hall, and out the front door.
Closing the door behind me, I felt a breeze blow across my body, causing me to shiver. Though it was March, it was still winter, and winter meant cold.
I walked down the steps and around the corner, to the side of the building.
At least it's quiet out here, I thought as I wrapped my arms around my body and sat down, leaning against the castle wall. I brought my knees up to my chest, shivering.
I lifted my head up abruptly as I heard the bushes rustle a few yards away, at the edge of the forest.
What was that? I asked myself. Damn, should've brought my sword.
The noise suddenly stopped and everything was quiet. It must've been the wind...
I leaned my head back against the white stone when I heard a voice.
"Rath!" It whispered, coming from the bushes, almost causing me to jump straight up. "Rath, it's me."
I stood up, looking around. "Who are you? Show yourself!" I yelled at the bush.
The voice sighed and a shivering, weather-beaten Bierrez stepped out of the shadows of the forest.
I gasped and almost fell over. "You followed me here?!" I said in disbelief, though I wasn't really the least bit surprised.
"Yes, what did you expect after you ran off like that?" He asked as he finished picking leaves out of his hair and walked over.
I frowned at him.
"What, no welcoming ceremony?" He asked, putting a hand on his hip.
"..."
He sighed. "You really don't want me here, do you? I'll just go," He said, beginning to turn away.
I grabbed his arm and shook my head. "No. It's not that. I want you here..." Before Bierrez could say anything, I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him close to me.
He was surprised, but he soon let his arms curl around my waist, stroking my back in soothing motions and resting his chin on my head.
I sniffed into his shirt and soon my eyes were filled with tears once again. What is this the third time today? I'm such a wuss...
Bierrez tensed up, noticing that his shirt was wet, and looked down at me. He put his hands on my shoulders and pushed me up from him. "What's the matter, Rath?" He asked, raising a hand to wipe a tear off my cheek.
I shook my head and looked down. "I'm sorry. God, I'm such a fucking wuss!"
"No, you're not, just tell me what's wrong."
I looked up into his concerned face, then plunged my face back into his warm shirt. "Thatz and Rune...they're together," I mumbled almost incoherently into his chest.
He seemed to have heard because he reached his hand up and began stroking my hair, bringing his face down and kissing the top of my head. "I'm sorry..." He mumbled into my hair.
I don't know how long we stayed in that position, but it felt good...and then I began to think...is this really the bastard that I had been fighting to the death only a few months ago? My mind laughed at the thought. And then I had another one. What am I going to do about Lykouleon, Rune, Thatz, and all the Dragon Officers? I can't just bring Bierrez into the castle...
I finally looked up. "Are we going to stand out here in the cold?" I asked him.
He smiled. A genuine Bierrez smile, I thought. "Only if you want to," He said.
"But what about...?"
"Don't worry about them," Bierrez whispered into my ear.
"What do ya mean?" I was about to ask when Bierrez picked me up off my feet and cradled me in his arms. "Ack!" Was all I made out.
He laughed and started carrying me to the castle doors.
I stopped him before he could open them. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" I asked him, trying to keep from giggling like a little girl.
"Yeah, it's fine. You just have to do all of the explaining," Bierrez said, smiling again as he opened the door.
