Awakening: Chapter 2
Nervously Ryo followed Dee down to their first class. He always hated the first day of classes; people often stared and asked questions, ones he really didn't want to have to answer. He didn't want to explain why he had transferred, he didn't want to reveal and relive the anguish in his past, and he didn't need the worried looks or pity. He wanted a fresh start; to forget.
Drug analysis was the first class of the day... another thing he wasn't looking forward too. Dee led the reluctant teen into the lecture theatre. He went and sat near the back of the lecture hall while Ryo chose to sit closer to the front, intending on paying close attention. Ryo pulled his notebook and pen out his bag, slipping on his glasses as he prepared for the class to begin.
As more and more students filed into the class room, Ryo anxiously shifted in his seat. He knew that he was the only new face at the academy and he had a hard time with the in class work. He was worried that he would make a fool of himself in front of everybody, especially since he didn't know where this school was in the curriculum. In his last school he hadn't really felt like studying and fell a fair bit behind, not caring how his marks dropped.
A few minutes later the professor walked in and the noise dimmed down. As the class began, Ryo lost some of his nervousness as the teacher only told the class his name and that he was a new student, and then went right to giving a lecture on the tools used by crime labs to identify the composition of unknown substances.
As the teacher droned on and on, Ryo who focused on everything the professor said, failed to notice another student watching him from the side of the room. Berkeley instantly noticed the new student when he came into the room; the handsome blond was kind of hard to miss. Throughout the class Berkeley watched somewhat entranced as Ryo took all the notes he could, seemingly determined to get everything important the professor said down on paper. Anyone else in the class just listened with half an ear not really caring what the professor tried to teach them. However, while Ryo was focused the whole time, he also seemed to be totally unaware of the curious and lustful glances some of the students cast in his direction, especially those from Berkeley.
Ryo shifted a bit in his seat when he became aware of someone staring at him. He refused to loose focus though, he needed to pay attention if he ever wanted to get through this semester, but he was beginning to get quite frustrated as he only understood about half of what the professor said. Something about a mass spectrometry instrument and charging ions to separate them, yeah…okay.
Dee was also keeping an eye on his room mate though he didn't out right stare, no he saved the glaring part for Berkeley, who hadn't taken his eyes off of Randy since he entered the room. Berkeley and his gang were known for their bullying and Dee could tell that from the stares Randy was receiving from the man that Berkeley had the slight blond in his sights for future conquest. As he watched his room mate, Dee also became aware that Randy was getting a bit frustrated as the class progressed. Apparently he didn't get what the professor was talking about, but he also noticed the blond didn't raise a hand to question what the professor was saying to try and clarify things. Dee shook his head, that wasn't the way to do things.
Finally the bell rang, signifying the end of class. Sighing in relief, Ryo placed his notebook and writing utensils back into his messenger bag. Once he had all of his stuff away, Ryo stood up, ready to leave when he felt someone touch his shoulder. Turning around, Ryo came face to face with the red haired man who'd been sitting beside him throughout the class.
“Hey. I'm Ted. Welcome to New York.” Ted said, holding out his hand to Ryo.
Smiling Ryo shook Ted's hand. “Hi, I'm Randy. Nice to meet you.”
Walking side by side the two left the class room, meeting Dee just outside the door. “So I hear from JJ that you're rooming with Dee.” Grinning, Ted slapped Dee on the back. “He's pretty jealous you know.”
Confused, Ryo shook his head. “Why would he be jealous?”
“Well, JJ is obsessed with Dee, has been for years. The fact that you're new AND you get to share a room with his love interest seems totally unfair; it doesn't help that you're good-looking either.” Ted said matter-of-factly.
Ryo blushed deeply at Ted's comment.
Dee just sighed and traded amused glances with the red head. “He doesn't seem to understand that I'm not interested in him, but that hasn't stopped him from hanging all over me.”
“Oh,” Ryo answered, still slightly confused. That little bit of information had been totally unexpected but it certainly explained JJ's actions towards him when they met.
“Or jumping on you or streaking through the hallway carrying your boxers with you chasing after him.” Ted smirked at that one, remembering all the commotion the two had caused.
“Okay, okay, let's stop with the embarrassing stories,” Dee said quickly, not wanting Ted to reveal anymore of JJ's and his unique moments. He turned towards Ryo, “So I guess we're off to the gym for some of T-bone's torture.”
“T-bone, torture…what!” Ryo asked incredulously, beginning to get concerned. He had a strong martial arts background, but from the way Dee was talking it sounded like he was a little out of his league.
“Oh, combat training. Our teacher is known for his military discipline. You know, like "YES SIR!" and drop and give me twenty, just stuff like that.” Ted tried to reassure Randy, noticing his apprehension.
“Oh, okay….” Ryo trailed off, still a little worried. He looked down at his watch, noticing that second period was approaching way too fast for his liking. “Hey guys, I have to go grab my gym clothes before class starts. I'll see you there?”
“Yeah, sure. Just don't be late, T-bone wouldn't like that.” Dee said, as he and Ted turned to go down the hallway.
Ryo nodded, even though Dee and Ted couldn't see his response and began walking rapidly towards his dorm. Not paying attention to the people around him, Ryo neglected to notice the large human mountain that was directly in front of him. Running into the obstacle, Ryo bounced off and landed on the floor. Looking up at the person, it is a person, Ryo thought, I'm sure of it, he began to apologize profusely.
“I'm sorry; I wasn't looking where I was going,” Ryo quickly said, grabbing his bag which had flown across the hall and suddenly finding himself face to face with a seriously angry blond.
“Don't let it happen again.” The larger man threatened, releasing Ryo from his grip, causing the smaller blond to stumble back. Throwing one last glare at the startled teen, Sean turned and stomped away. A little shaken, Ryo collected himself, and continued onto his dorm.

Ryo managed to gather his change of clothes, get to the locker room, change and put his clothes into an unused locker just as the bell rang. A little nervous, Ryo headed into the gym, quickly spotting Dee and Ted near the locker room doors, waiting for him, as promised.
Smirking at his slightly out of breath room mate, Dee slapped Ted on the back. “Well it looks like you made it just on time, Randy. Good thing or you'd be in so much trouble.”
“Yeah well, I'm lucky I still got here on time. I ran into somebody on my way back to our dorm, and he wasn't exactly friendly,” Ryo replied.
The three boys began to walk into the gym while Ryo continued on with his story. “I swear he was as big a mountain,” Ryo hesitated slightly trying to remember what the other student had looked like, when said student walked in with another group of guys. “Actually that blond over there was him.” Ryo stated as he motioned to the guys that just entered the gym.
Dee and Ted exchanged knowing glances. “Oh, you mean Sean,” Ted said. “He almost is as big as a mountain; it's because he plays football, a linebacker to be more precise. He's part of Berkeley's gang, the arrogant bastards.”
Hearing this Ryo shot a nervous glance at the other group of boys. “Berkeley's gang? He's part of a gang?”
Nodding his head Ted locked gazes with the blond. “You're going to want to stay clear of them, cause once they have you in their sights and claim you as theirs, then you're in for a lot of trouble.”
Before Ryo could ask any more questions, they were interrupted by their teacher. "Boys, I think its time that you began to pay attention. Class has already started." Mr. Thibeau said sternly.
Ryo looked around, seeing that all the other students were in line, with the exception of him, Ted and Dee. He blushed in embarrassment. “Sorry, sir,” he whispered, looking down.
“What did you say?” the teacher practically shouted, “I can't hear you!”
“Sorry, sir!” Ryo replied louder, louder than he meant too. Everyone's heads had turned, staring at him. Great, just what I needed, attention.
At the teachers raised voice, Berkeley turned to watch as the blond from his morning class got dressed down by Mr. Thibeau.
“Sorry! What do you mean by sorry! You interrupted my class, Mr……..?”
Ryo supplied his name, “MacLean, sir.”
“Mr. MacLean, this is not a way to make a good impression on me. I expect it from these two,” he motioned towards Dee and Ted, “but not from a new student. Detention for all three of you, Friday night at 4:00pm. And you Mr. MacLean, will be assisting me today.”
Ryo just nodded, and followed the other two as they lined up in front of their teacher and the class began. For the first part all they did were stretches, which wasn't so bad, considering he did the same type of stretches as a warm - up for karate.
As they set about doing sit - ups and push - ups, Ryo was once again unaware of the looks he was receiving from Berkeley. Berkeley noticed that Randy had no problem with any of the exercises, something that he was surprised at. Berkeley grinned, Nice, a challenge, he thought to himself.
Dee groaned to himself when he noticed Berkeley eying Randy again, who was doing his exercises. He hated guys like Berkeley, guys who thought they could have everything they wanted just because Daddy's loaded. He shook his head, he hoped that Berkeley wasn't going to try anything, but somehow he knew that was just wishful thinking.
“All right you lazy dogs get yourselves up off of that floor and get over to the shooting range. Now HUSSLE!” Mr. Thibeau yelled at the class, motioning in the direction that they were supposed to go.
With out any hesitation they all got up and sprinted to the gym door. As they neared the shooting range, Mr. Thibeau ran up alongside of Ryo. “MacLean, are you familiar with sharp shooting?”
Ryo shook his head, as he answered slightly breathlessly. “No sir.”
Mr. Thibeau smirked as he passed the blond. “Well, you're going to learn. Today.”
A few minutes later, all of the students were crowded into the shooting range, a couple stragglers coming in behind the others. Mr. Thibeau paced in front of the class, beginning his lecture on sharp shooting. “Sharp shooting is a skill that would be to your benefit to learn. Good sharp shooters are always in demand. MacLean, I want you to come here so we can show these weaklings how to shoot.”
Hesitantly Ryo stepped forward, knowing that all of his fellow students were watching his every movement. This is definitely not my day.
Once Ryo was standing before the class, Mr. Thibeau turned his attention to the slight blond boy and three guns he had beside him. “Come here MacLean. Do you know how to shoot a pistol?”
At Ryo's nod, Mr. Thibeau motioned for Ryo to take the gun from him. “Now I want you to go over there,” the teacher pointed to area not too far away from where they were standing, “And show me and the rest of the class here that you do indeed know how to shoot.”
Taking a deep breath, Ryo flexed his hand on the handle of the gun, feeling the eyes of everyone in the room focused on him. Sighing Ryo began to raise the deadly weapon. Might as well get this over with.
Instinctively relaxing his body, Ryo fell into a meditative state, the same one that he used while practicing his martial arts. Breathing deeply, he slowed his heart rate back down to normal and calmly stepped forward, drowning out the sounds that his class was making, focusing his eyes on the target. With the gun now completely raised, Ryo squeezed the trigger three times in quick succession. He then stepped back and waited for the target to come forward.
There were a couple of surprised murmurs as everyone saw that Ryo had landed one bullet right in the heart and the other two no more then a centimeter away from the first.
Berkeley stared fascinated at the blond that was now standing with his back to the class. The other's body had relaxed and Randy had become more calm and focused compared to the nervous figure that had stood before them only moments before. This kid had certainly deceived everyone in the class with his shy manner and slender frame that hide the strength that he actually possesses, Berkeley smirked to himself when the target was brought close enough so that they could all see the results of Randy's shooting skills, noting how close to each other the shots were and how precise they were. Oh this is getting better and better. I like the idea of Randy as my own even more now.
Mr. Thibeau was mildly impressed with Ryo's apparent skill and familiarity of handling a firearm. “That was well enough MacLean, now how about I teach you how to handle a gun that takes considerably more skill to shoot.”
And so the class went on. Mr. Thibeau showing everyone how to load, clean, and aim their guns properly. By the time that the bell rang, Ryo and only a handful of his fellow students actually managed to shoot their weapons with some level of accuracy. Carefully putting their guns away under the ever watchful eyes of Mr. Thibeau, the students then began to make their way back to the locker rooms. However Ryo was held back when the teacher called out to him, telling him to stay for a moment.
Walking back to his teacher, Ryo stopped when he was directly in front of him. “Yes, sir?” he asked politely, wondering what Mr. Thibeau wanted.
“Randy, how often have you handled a gun?” the teacher asked curiously.
Ryo hesitated, unsure of what his teacher was getting at. “About a year, sir,” he replied honesty.
“You've only handled a gun for about a year and you can shoot with that kind of precision?” Mr. Thibeau scoffed, that kind of skill for a rookie was literally impossible.
Ryo frowned slightly at the biting tone in Mr. Thibeau's voice. “Yes. I can handle a gun with that type of precision only after a year of training and practice.”
Seeing the doubt and skepticism in Mr. Thibeau's face, Ryo's voice became cold as steel and the light dimmed in his dark eyes. “Because I became very determined to learn how to shoot after the murder of my parents. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go get ready for my next class.” Without waiting for a reply, Ryo turned and walked determinedly out of the shooting range building, and once out of sight made a beeline for the gym's locker rooms.

Ryo glanced around the nearly empty locker room as he opened his locker. The last remaining members of his gym class left, the door shutting with a resonating slam in the huge room. Sighing, he got out his gym bag with his change of clothes. He was really uncomfortable changing in front of others. He didn't want anyone to look, or worse, stare at him, and he didn't want to see anything either.
There was a creak as the large door was opened again and the sound of several footsteps coming towards him. In a moment of panic, he quickly did up the button on his pants, reaching for his shirt. A hand grabbed him by the shoulder, and pushed him roughly into the closed locker next to his.
Looking up into the face of his attacker, he saw that it was the guy that had been staring at him nearly all day. He had found out earlier from Dee that this was Berkeley Rose, one of the most charming jack asses that the school had to offer. He may seem really nice upon first impression, but many soon found him to be less than appealing.
Now he was pinned; Berkeley's hands pressing against the locker on either side of his head. Just great.
“Hey...you just started here right?" The taller blond asked.
“Y-Yeah.” Ryo responded, unsure if he should really be talking.
“I thought so. I've been watching you, and I like what I see. We should talk sometime. I'm sure we'll have lots to…say.” Berkeley said, one of his hands skimming down Ryo's side in what might have been a caress, if Ryo hadn't been so freaked by it. The lustful look in Berkeley's icy blue eyes wasn't doing anything to help the situation either.
“Um…I'm kind of busy…ah…with homework and all…so…um, maybe…” Ryo answered reluctantly, not knowing what to say to get Berkeley to leave him alone. He really didn't need the whole gang after him, since Sean had already made it clear not to mess with him.
“Good, I won't let you forget that promise. Alright, I just have to tell you a few things about how this place is run. One: I'm the boss around here, no one messes with me, or any of my friends,” he said, indicating the small group of people standing around behind him.
Ryo recognized a couple of them. Diana: a slut that Dee - Mr. Fountain of Information - had informed him would sleep with anything on two legs; and Berkeley's main woman, not that that stopped either of them from cheating on the other. Jazmine: Diana's best friend, and sometimes lover (because he had SO wanted to know that). And the typical body guard crew of every bad guy: Alex: built like a regular jock, and tough looking. Matt: your average punk, complete with skateboard. Jareth: a tall, dark skinned basketball player. And Sean. He definitely recognized Sean. He was the `human mountain' that Ryo had crashed into before class, and seemed to be almost a clone of Berkeley, doing whatever he did, saying whatever he did…a real stupid kind of guy.
“Two:” Berkeley continued, “It's in your best interests if I'm your friend too.”
“O-Okay." Ryo stammered, bare chest heaving in nervousness. Really, he didn't need to be bullied on top of everything else.
“Great. I'm sure we'll be the best of friends.” Berkeley sneered at him. Releasing the teen, he moved back to stand with his friends. “Remember those rules, and I'm sure we'll be fine.”
The group turned and walked out, the door slamming behind them, leaving Ryo alone once again. He slumped and slid down the locker, hiding his face in his hands. Why do these things always seem to happen? It wasn't as if he asked for it. The more he avoided it, the more this kind of attention seemed to be attracted to him.
Heaving a sigh, he stood and pulled on his shirt, grabbing the rest of his things and headed out the door to go back to his dorm.
