Chapter 15-Running on E
A/N-Hello all. Sorry for the horrible delay since last chapter. The muses weren’t cooperating and needless to say, home life hasn’t been a great deal of fun around here. For those of you who don’t visit my Livejournal, I recently lost one job and started another. I’ve been stressed over that and my muses started breeding new plotbunnies in different fandoms. I’ll try and get back on track.
As I promised Akasha721, here’s the latest installment. I have to say, I’m not really happy with this chapter. I rewrote it six times before managing this draft, and I’m still less than pleased. It’s mostly a bridging chapter between the conclusions drawn last chapter and the action that begins next chapter.
(Okay, that’s enough grumbling, Subu! We have a chapter to get out! Say thank you to all the nice people who’ve threatened to kill us so we can post this darned thing!) *rolls eyes* Thank you, Kita, for that. I wasn’t likely to forget. Thanks go to the usual suspects… Catti-dono, Hana-tenshi, Dubhghall, Ladymynx, Daxemon and Garita and everyone who reads this. Special thanks go to Akasha721, who reminded me it was time to get out of my funk and write something. Hope you enjoy… the next chapter will be better, we promise. (Love you, everybody!! Sorries for the grumpy one. She needs sleep and to get over the flu bug. *sprays keyboard with disinfectant* Ick!)
Ryo found the sight of Drake pacing outside of the chief’s office rather funny. Drake, when he wasn’t in the middle of a firefight or something else equally dangerous, was a confirmed slacker. His tendency to slouch around was well known. So seeing him pacing like an expectant father outside of a delivery room was just incredibly amusing.
Fighting to keep from grinning, Ryo hailed the blonde. “Drake? What are you doing?”
Drake blinked at him and muttered a sort of absentminded greeting before turning his attention back to the closed door. “Damn, what’s taking so long?”
Ryo waved a hand in front of Drake’s face. “Yoo-hoo. Anybody home? What are you doing?”
Drake offered him a sheepish sort of smile. “Sorry, man. I’m just afraid the badger’s not going to go for this. He’s had JJ in there for close to half an hour already.”
“Go for what?”
Drake blinked at him and for the first time Ryo noticed that Drake looked like death warmed over. There were shadows under his stormy gray eyes and he was unshaven. His clothes were badly rumpled and his blond hair looked like it hadn’t seen a brush in a week. “Sorry, man. I forgot that you weren’t here for the all-night brainstorming session.”
“All night? Have you slept at all?”
Drake shrugged carelessly. “Napped for maybe an hour, waiting for the badger to come in.” He leaned against the wall, yawning. “And thank you kindly for reminding me just how damned tired I am.” He muttered sourly, before giving Ryo the rundown on what he and JJ had figured out.
JJ still hadn’t emerged from the office when he was done and Drake looked like he wanted to kick it down and go charging to JJ’s rescue. Ryo clapped his shoulder. “Relax, Drake. Fretting about it won’t make it go any faster. And JJ’s right. The chief can’t sit on his hands anymore.”
Drake managed a shadow of his normal grin. “Yeah, I know. I just get antsy from lack of sleep. And it’s one heck of a road trip.” Drake leaned against the wall and sighed, shoving his hands into his pockets. “And what are we hoping to find in the end? An empty padded cell? Proof that our main suspect is still drooling vacantly in a corner?”
Ryo couldn’t take anymore of Drake’s pity party and whacked him upside the back of the head. “You’re a cop, behave like one.” He reprimanded sharply. “No one is perfect and someone always, always is going to slip up eventually. Sooner or later, the killer is going to fuck up and then we’ll have them.”
Drake rubbed tired eyes with one hand. “But not soon enough to save Richmond’s girl or Roberts.” He knew his anguish was showing in his voice, but he couldn’t hide it.
Ryo’s face softened. “Probably not, but you know perfectly well that Rose will have every man here and at the Bronx station out looking for them while you’re out of town.”
Drake managed a nod. “Rose is back?”
Ryo nodded. “I just saw him downstairs. Looks like he pulled an all-nighter on the plane. To quote Dee, Rose looked ‘less than fresh.’ ”
That earned a wry chuckle. “Considering that Rose usually looks like he’s expecting to be accosted for a GQ cover-shoot at any time, I suspect that’s saying something.” Drake glanced back at the closed door and heaved another sigh.
Ryo caught it and sighed himself, this time in exasperation. Time to try a different tack. “So, Drake, how are things going between you and JJ?”
That earned him something that might have been a glare and a faint hint of red colored Drake’s cheeks. He mumbled something incomprehensible.
Ryo couldn’t resist a verbal prod. “I’m sorry, could you repeat that?”
Drake’s glare turned poisonous. “Fine.”
Ryo shrugged, getting a great deal of enjoyment out of Drake’s discomfiture. God knows, he’d suffered enough of it when Dee had been chasing him. Payback is sweet! He propped a shoulder against the wall and grinned. “C’mon, Drake. Spill.”
Drake snarled and shot him a look of sheer annoyance. “You have been hanging around with Dee way too much. He’s starting to rub off on you.”
Ryo snorted. “We’re not talking about me here. We’re talking about you and JJ.”
“Ooh, gossip. Gossip is good… when you’re not in my way, again!”
Drake turned to glare at an all-too-awake Jim. Ryo smiled in greeting, leaving Drake to grumble uselessly at both of them.
“Where are you headed to this early in the morning, Jim?” Ryo asked.
“Where does it look like? I’m supposed to be meeting with your chief this morning.”
Ryo grinned, dark eyes sparkling. “Then you have time to shoot the breeze. JJ’s in there, having a meeting with him right now.”
Jim tipped his glasses down and stared at Ryo over the top of them. “You must have gotten lucky last night. That’s the only thing that would make you this annoyingly perky. Plus you’re starting to talk like Laytner.”
Drake shot Jim a grateful look as Ryo turned bright red and clammed up. Drake glanced over his shoulder at the closed door and succinctly summed up last night’s brainstorming session and the conclusions they had drawn. Jim cocked his head and regarded Drake with surprise. “That’s some good thinking. Do you really think the wife is the one behind the murders?”
Drake sighed and shrugged wearily. “As of right now, she’s the best and possibly the only lead we have. She has the motive. We just have to figure out whether or not she’s really in there, and if she isn’t, how she escaped.”
Jim scratched the bridge of his nose thoughtfully. “Not so much how she escaped, but who helped her escape. There had to be an inside man.”
Drake nodded, pausing to stretch knotted muscles. “My thought is her father. He runs the board of directors there at the hospital where she’s confined. If anyone helped her escape, it would have been him. He has the ways and means of sneaking her out of there without undue difficulty.”
Jim was about to reply when the door opened and JJ emerged, looking tired but triumphant. Heedless of the fact that there were others in the hallway, he flung his arms around Drake’s neck. “Chief approved it! We just have to pick up the paperwork and we’re off!
JJ glanced up when Drake didn’t reply and noticed the other two men. Unlike Drake, who was still tongue-tied and red, he simply smiled at Jim and Ryo. “Hey, Jim-sempai, Ryo-sempai!”
Ryo nodded. “I take it things went well?”
JJ nodded. “Chief approved our little road-trip to see if Melanie Hayle really is safely institutionalized or whether she’s the one murdering teens. He’s pushing through the paperwork as we speak. He wants us on the road by tonight.”
Drake blinked slowly at JJ. “Uhm, do you think you could let go of my neck?”
JJ shook his head. “Nope. I’m happy and Ryo-sempai and Jim-sempai already know about us so… no.”
“JJ…” Drake groaned. But, detective that he was, he quickly went on to the rest of what JJ had said. “Tonight?”
“Yep. He gave us the rest of the day off to pack and get everything in order and has shifted most of our caseload to the rest of the department until we get back.” JJ tipped his head at Ryo. “That means you guys get a larger caseload, and that still doesn’t count the babysitting duties.”
Ryo made a sound that was half-scoff, half-laugh, but his dark eyes were twinkling merrily at the sight of JJ hanging from Drake’s neck like some sort of outsized human necktie. “I figured as much when I heard what you two were up to. And thankfully, we’re only in charge of the baby-sitting duty on the Richmond’s. Chief shuffled it so we only have to act as command center for the men actually watching them.”
JJ nodded sagely. “That sounds like a good thing.” He glanced over at Jim. “Hey, Jim-sempai! Anything new for us?”
Jim managed to stifle the chuckles that had been fighting to escape since JJ had launched himself at his partner. “Very little that we didn’t know already. We’re still waiting on the analysis of those fibers we got off of Marty’s girl. What I can tell you now is that it’s a low-grade standard carpet fiber of the kind most often found in older cars. We’re waiting for a match for anything more specific than that.”
JJ scowled. “Damn. I was really hoping for more than that.”
Jim snorted through his nose. “This isn’t daytime TV, Detective. Solutions don’t come wrapped up neatly in hour-long segments.”
JJ blinked sideways at the forensic specialist. “What died in your Wheaties?”
Jim blinked and then chuckled ruefully. “That was uncalled for, wasn’t it? Sorry. I think this case is starting to really get to me too. So many innocents dead…” He paused and glanced toward the offices the CI unit shared. “Or traumatized. And for what? A grudge that should have died with Hayle in prison?”
A gruff voice broke into the conversation. “Campbell, move your ass. Time is money. Parker, Adams, don’t you have things to do? MacLean, do I have to find things for you to do?” Smith scowled freely at all of them. “Move it along, gentlemen.”
JJ chuckled, but let go of his partner’s neck, only to grab hold of his wrist. “C’mon, Drake. Places to go, people to arrest!”
Drake grumbled but allowed himself to be towed off with only cursory nods at Ryo and Jim.
*---------------------*
Drake looked askance at the slim figure hauling him down the hallway. “So, what’s the plan? Tell me we have a plan, right?”
JJ shot him one of his bright grins. “Yep. I go down and pick up the warrants and other paperwork from processing and you go grab at least a change of clothes for each of us. It’s a long drive up there.” He turned and tossed Drake a keyring. “Spare keys for my place. There’s a duffel bag in the hall closet that you can use for my stuff.”
Drake caught the keys with a weary sigh. More JJ on sleep-deprivation. Just what he needed. “You do realize neither of us have had any sleep, right?” He huffed softly. And I can’t remember the last time I had a smoke.”
JJ paused in his headlong flight. “We’ll leave out around five. That should give us time to get everything together and still catch a couple hours of sleep. And you’re quitting smoking, remember?”
Drake scowled. “Yeah, yeah… I remember. I was kinda hoping you forgot though.”
JJ flicked him a quicksilver grin. “Nice try. Besides, I have ways of distracting you from your nicotine cravings, right?”
Heat shot up from the depths of Drake’s belly and he just knew he was turning red again. “Dammit, JJ.” But there was no real annoyance in his voice.
JJ just continued grinning as he paused to glance around and drop a swift kiss on Drake’s lips. Drake muttered sullenly under his breath, but didn’t try to stop him. It would have been a useless endeavor anyway.
Drake pulled away when it seemed that JJ would have gone in for a second kiss, wary of being spotted by someone other than the friends in the CI unit who already knew about he and JJ. “Enough. How much should I pack for you?”
JJ paused thoughtfully. “Say at least two changes of clothes and a set of pajamas. I don’t know if we’ll have to stop. Guess it depends on how much rest we can manage to get before we leave.” He nodded at the keys in Drake’s hand. “I’ll pick up the necessary paperwork and hand over the rest of our caseload and meet you back at my place, kay? We’ll grab something to eat and get a little shuteye before we have to hit the road.”
Drake nodded rueful agreement. “Make it quick,” He cautioned. “I don’t know how much longer I can keep my eyes open.”
With a laugh, JJ nodded and gave Drake yet another of his blindingly quick embraces before heading off at that tireless trot of his.
*-------------------------------------------*
Drake woke as a slim figure snuggled against him. It took him a moment to remember where he was. He’d packed his bag and headed over to JJ’s. He’d packed JJ’s things and sat on the couch, figuring to watch a little TV before JJ got home. That was about the last thing he remembered. Blinking, he looked blearily down at the oddly-colored thatch of hair resting on his chest. “JJ?”
JJ sighed. “Why don’t we move to the bed for a couple of hours? It’ll be more comfortable than the couch.”
Drake managed a nod. “Probably a good idea.”
JJ rose and held out a hand to him. Drake accepted it and allowed the younger man to tug him toward the bedroom. He was too tired to be embarrassed. With a weary sigh, he sat on the edge of the bed and watched JJ peel off his jacket and shirt. When his partner had stripped to his boxers, Drake willingly slid under the sheets to make room. JJ sighed and tucked himself into Drake’s arms, resting his cheek on Drake’s shoulder. “I set the alarm on my cell phone. That should give us enough time to get ready and grab something to eat before we leave.”
Drake nodded sleepily. Already the warmth of the body in his embrace was lulling him back into his interrupted slumber. As he drifted back off, he felt JJ plant a sleepy kiss on his cheek. Distantly, he wondered at how easily sleep came to him…
