Chapter Four: Surrender
Dee woke up in a cold, white hospital room all by himself. He heard someone pacing outside, and nervous talking.
He looked down at his battered body. The bleeding had stopped, but there was a red splotch on the white sheet. It was quickly fading to brown.
He stared at it. Many people are revolted by the sight of blood, but Dee found it beautiful, in a sick, twisted way. Blood was so red. So very, very red. But it always faded. Became less pure.
"Dee, you're awake." Ryo walked in quietly and sat down in a chair not too far from the bed, but far enough that Dee had his space. "How are you feeling?"
Ryo felt so helpless. There was Dee, his partner, his best friend, his… he could barely think it, but knew it was true; his love, and he couldn't do anything to help his. He hadn't done anything to help him. He wanted to hold Dee until that cold, detatched look in his eyes faded and kiss him until he smiled again.
Dee watched Ryo, pulled between joy that Ryo still wanted to be near him and revulsion, because it was another body in the room. He'd known he wasn't immune to this type of thing. But he'd never really thought about it until that night.
"Dee," Ryo's voice sounded strained. As if he was trying not to cry. "Dee, what can I do to help? Dee, I love you so much, and I almost lost you back there. You almost slipped through my fingers like all that blood before I had a chance to tell you that you were all that mattered to me."
Dee stared at him. "Randy?"
"Don't call me that!" Ryo exclaimed, standing up, tears running freely now. "I'm Ryo, dammit! Ryo! Not Randy. Not Detective McLane. Ryo! I don't know what's going on with you, but all I want to do is help. Don't push me away Dee. Please don't push me away."
"R-R-Ryo?"
Dee looked at his partner. Saw the way his hands were held open at his sides. The look of utter anguish.
"Ryo." It felt so good to say it again. Maybe he was tainted, but his love for that lovely, eathreal seraph standing in front of him was not. And if Ryo would have him back, then so be it.
"Ryo, baby, I'm so sorry. I just had to figure out a few things first."
Ryo took a tentative step towards him. Dee felt the love and the fear battle inside of him. He surrendered entirely to his emotions, trusting that his love was strong enough. Trusting Ryo enough, and watched the fear ebb away. At that moment, he knew he had won.
Seeing Dee's encouraging smile, Ryo sat in the small bedside chair. He slowly snaked his hand on top of Dee's. Dee could practically feel Ryo's relief that he didn't flinch or turn away.
"Ryo, baby, I love you."
There was a beat, then Dee heard the words he was so anxious to hear, and he knew in his heat that they did not come from pity, or relief that he was alive. It was a pure emotion, untainted by time, or events.
"I love you to Dee. I love you too."
Dee pulled Ryo into his arms, and the other man did not protest. They simply sat there, together, and Dee knew that no matter what happened, this would be there forever. This was love. And love was what mattered.
