Tale of the Animal Spirits

`Chapter Five - Night Fall Brings a New Face`

"Windy we almost dere?" The pouting child asked, slumping slowing behind the female.

"Yeah…Almost." She lied, looking around the unfamiliar area. Her nose, picked no traces of scents she recognized either. How could she be lost? '…Where am i.' She thought desperately.

"I'm getting tired…" MistKitten complained, dragging her feet noticeably and stifling a whimper.

"I know, Misty…We just need to keep going, we'll find everyone else soon." She said, glancing behind to the girl, her odd colored eyes filled with diamond tears. Tears of fear, which could be noticeably smelt by the wolf-child. She sighed, leaning down upon the moist ground. "A small rest, Kay?"

"Kay!" She said, cheering up, at least a little bit. She flopped down upon the grass, eyes looking to the softly lit sky. It was nearly night, and they had no direction of how to get back. "Jazzy, the sky ish pwetty, huh?" She mumbled, clutching her over-stuffed cat-doll closer to her form.

"Jazzy?" The wolf-girl repeated, the quiet mumble didn't go unheard from her twitching ears. She casually set the back pack a ways from her, basically an angered toss. Then lay side-by-side next to the other.

"Jazzy ish my bestest friend. She helps me, when I get…Scared n' stuff." She said gently, eyes transfixed upon the sky.

"I see, I'm glad she helps you, Misty." She smiled, looking at the doll she held. Its fur was dyed tie-dye to MistKitten's. Fur being light blue and deep pink. Matching her dress and hair, and even eyes. Her head met the gently glade of mushrooms and she murred as the night air whipped about. The reality would just have to wait.

"I would like to be a star…" The kitten-child said to herself, sighing gently.

"Why's that?" She asked, mildly interested; though her lids did feel a little heavy.

"'Cause stars never get losted…They always have someone next to them, and…never alone." She completed her statement, looking thoughtful as she averted her gaze to her doll.

Lightning the mood she added, "Well, don't get any ideas, your already turning into a kitty."

A light giggle emitted upon the fresh night air. "I know…"

"Misty we should go…" She said, reluctantly rising to her feet.

"Aw…" She whined, getting up drowsily, getting help of course from the elder girl.

"We don't need to waste anymore time…We should at least try and find a way back…You know?" She stated a good point and the girl nodded, about o follow suit when…

"What's wrong?" She asked, feeling the tension come through.

"Shhh…" She hushed as the girl went into predatory mode. She growled noticeably, MistKitten taking the hint to hide behind some brush a small distance behind the girl. Slowly she approached the dark figure near her knapsack. "What're you doing?!" She half-hoped it was a friend, and her senses were just off. But, what she smelled, was not a scent she knew. She came on all fours cautious of what the being was. The hiss came upon the air as well, causing her to stop her approach and snarl.

"W-Windy?" The soft whimper emitted from the bushes. She glanced behind, and that was all it took for the…Creature to launch itself upon the girl. Hissing and snarling rang through the once quiet - yet tense air. The small child in the bushes could only watch on as the two-attacked eachother, soft crimson falling from their bodies. The night's soft scent carrying the stench of blood…

A howl rang upon the darkness, causing all with animal ears to perk up. "T…That was WindWolf." The male wolf-child snarled, he tensing up as well.

"…Howl, please calm yourself, following will do nothing. We have no idea what direction it came from." The fox stated smartly. Though, a bridge of worry formed in the pit of his stomach.

He was force to calm, though he was still crouching upon the grass, just outside of the cave. "I think we should just go, they'll find us in due time." The feline-girl said sharply, keeping emotion from her voice.

In a second her shirt collar hoisted her however, her eyes widening for a brief moment. Soon her golden, emotionless orbs set into a glare, staring down the pale slits that were the wolven's eyes. "Don't ever suggest that I leave my mate. EVER!" He snarled, nose to nose with the female. Her ears folded back but that was as close to a submission he was going to get from the girl. Dropping her, she abruptly landing on her hind feet, he stalked to sulk near a tree.

"We will not leave a friend, LoneHowl, do not worry." He took off the tone of friendship, not normal for the leader of their 'pack'. It brought everyone's attention back however. "All we need to do is understand where her scent is, then we can find her."

"That's the thing…" He said gruffly, eyes fixing upon the redhead once more.

"What is?" The hawk intervened.

"I can't smell her…At all, the scents off this wood are all messed up." He admitted finally, looking angrily to the tree he sat under.

"…I thought it may have only been me." Sleek said softly. "It'll be harder than I first thought. Perhaps a search party, then? We could take ground, while FlameHawk takes the air."

"I can't take the skies, the growth of the trees are too high. Even if I was to get over them, there's no way to see behind the overgrowth of the tree tops." He pointed out soundly, crossing his arms over his bare chest and leaning against the outside cave wall.

"You're pretty much useless then, just like the rest of us." She replied smugly.

"We don't need this right now, ShadowKat!" He blurted out, making the group startle to a degree. "Just because we can't use our sense of smell, doesn't mean we're blind. Our eyes still work unlike your compassion."

"M…My compassion, you low-life fox…What do you know about compassion?! You're just…" She snarled, but couldn't get out the hurtful words she could spill. She merely fell silent, much to everyone's surprise, her eyes following to the ground.

"Let's just go…," The wolf-child said finally, getting to his feet once more.

"Groups of two…" FlameHawk suggested, going to stand by LoneHowl.

Sleek nodded, and much to the disgust of ShadowKat they walked off in the opposite direction of the Hawk and Wolf. "We'll meet back here when the moon rises. Until then, try your best to find the two missing." They nodded and sped off into the night, following the howls and hisses from the creatures.

"Caw I know your there." His voice broker the chilling air and the crow-child didn't come from the shadowed treetops.

"Observant you are." He stated, but had no intention of becoming visible.

He snorted, "Anything could be 'observant' of you, your scent is rancid."

"Really now, cat, I hadn't noticed you had taste in scents." He cawed softly to the night air.

"I don't, but I'd pick anything over you. Why did you follow me anyway?" He said dryly, finishing his job of trapping he tucked his dagger away.

"Mistress thought you too incompetent and sent me to watch your every move. However, I was not supposed to be noticed, but we don't have to tell her do we?" He mused, "Ah, and what were you trying to do anyway, child?"

"Why do you want to know. Are you too dumb to recognize a trap?" He smirked, gesturing to the finely made oval he had. The trees and branches weaved expertly to keep someone inside.

"I see." He said, catching on abruptly, "You were to trap those to ladies I presume?"

"Of course." He nodded, glancing into the meadow where the girl's had just rested down.

"Then why haven't you made a move yet?" He said, raising a brow.

"I don't need to, you see, I have another trick in play." He mumbled, grinning slightly as she bristled.

"Oh?" He said, thoroughly confused as to what his companion was getting at.

"Remember…The other…" He said, casually as he leaned against the woven branches.

"The…Other?" He blinked, but crimson optics focussed once more, a grin pressing upon his thin lips. "So, she agreed to help you?"

"Of course…" He said once more, losing patience in his idiotic 'friend'. "She is after all under command of, Lady Panther."

"I see, I see…" He nodded just as the painful howl filled the air. "She is ordered to kill?"

He kept a silence. "…To kill, yes…Only one."

"One? But there are two, are their not?" He pressed.

"Do not, underestimate me, Caw." He said sourly. The crow-child shutting up only out of curiosity for what was happening in the meadow before them. So, pressing an eye up to a hole, he watched…

A/N:

Sorry it's short! But I wanted a cliff-hanger thing or whatever… Oh, and what couples would you like to see together? *Wink, wink, nudge, nudge* Now that I got you thinking about it, why don't you make a fic? *Smiles* I give permission to use my characters as long as you tell me…Cause then I can read 'em. Of course, review and new chapter will be coming shortly. Twice as long for this one's shortness and boredom. Now a letter from the characters:

Cast Bash! Now available in chapters to come!

Sleek: Uh…Hi?

ShadowKat: I don't want to be in this dumb fic, and I sure as hell don't know why you even made me stop my assault on Sleek!

Sleek: Aw, ya' know you didn't want to make me feel all sad…

ShadowKat: Yes I did.

Sleek: No you didn't… *Grabs her in an one-armed hug.*

LoneHowl: *Protectively holds onto WindWolf* If anyone wants me in a fic…It better have WindWolf in it.

FlameHawk: Well, that was interesting. …What's up with Sleek and Shadow? *He asks no one in particular*

Sleek and ShadowKat: NOTHING! *Breaks embrace, Sleek sporting a bitten arm*

Author: *Twirling a pencil idly in her fingers* I beg to differ. *cackles.*
