Chapter Two
The older boy waited for the silence to end, and to his surprise, Nikumu broke it. "You know, I don't even know your name..."
Rezuka looked shocked, and looked around. "You don't? I thought I told you. Well, in any case, it's Rezuka. Rezuka Taikito. And you?"
Nikumu nodded in acknowledgement before telling Rezuka his own name, "Nikumu Azakai."
Rezuka paused, and raised an eyebrow, "You say your name is hate?" Nikumu looked down, ashamed. He grabbed his right arm with his left, and nodded. "Oh, I'm sorry, did I hurt your feelings?" Rezuka responded in a concerned manner. Nikumu looked back up to the older boy.
He shook his head. "No, it's okay. I get that a lot. Many people want to know why my name is hate. Some are scared, and some tease me. I'm used to it."
Rezuka frowned, "You shouldn't be used to it. I don't like people that are like that. You know, sterotypical people." Nikumu nodded again. Rezuka smiled, "I say, you're not exactly the talkative type are you? Oh well, I don't blame you. I'm rather chatty myself. It has gotten me into enough trouble..." He laughed, "Well, since you're going to be my roommate, I guess we should know more about each other."
The younger boy nodded once again, "Yes, that would be a good idea. Do you want me to start?"
Rezuka smiled, "Do whatever you wish."
Nikumu smiled, "Okay. Well, first off, I used to live my grandfather and younger sister. My, my grandfather died a couple weeks ago. The police sent my sister off to live with my aunt, who lives in another city, Okayama, I believe. Anyway, they said I was old enough to live on my own. I'm sixteen, and I didn't really think anyone wanted to take care of me. I'm kind of an orphan now." He paused and removed his hand from his arm. An ornate black Z was imprinted upon his skin. "I don't know where I got this. My grandfather said that it was a prophecy. I used to believe him, but now... I don't think that even if it was, that it was a good one." He sighed, and leaned back on the couch. "Anyway, after my grandpa died, my life kind of went down hill. Kids had a new reason to tease me. 'Orphan-boy','unwanted' or something equally brilliant. That's what they called me. Sometimes they'd call me 'the prophetical loser'. That one hurt the most." Rezuka scooted closer, and kept the same concered and yet, intrigued look upon his face. "There were some bullies. They would beat me up, or dump me in a trash can. I could fit, I'm not very big. Only 5' 4" last I checked. I didn't really do anything about it though. Oh sure, I'd tell them to stop, but they'd never listen of course." He paused again, and took a sip of his cocoa. "But there was one person who stood up for me. He had been a friend of the family for years. He is, was, my only friend. His name was Daisuke. I really looked up to him, he was tall, strong, and good looking." Nikumu blushed slightly. "And he stood up for me. But when his back was turned, they called me 'queer' and, well... I told Daisuke, and he... and he asked me if I was... that way. I told him that I didn't know. Daisuke was a good friend though. He told me that he didn't mind even if I was. That made me happy. Er, um, to know that he wouldn't mind if I was. Not that I am, necessarily." He stopped, and waited for Rezuka's reaction.
"Well, I'm not the one to say," He began, "but... I'm doubting that, that was a hypothetical statement. It's not easy admitting to something like that, I know."
Nikumu stopped him, "what do you mean by that?"
Rezuka smiled, 'you'll see.... but anyway, continue."
Nikumu eyed him suspiciously before continuing. "Well, anyway, one day I was walking my dog, like I said before. And, you know what happened... after that."
Rezuka eyed him critically. "I have a question. Do... do you feel, that way, about anyone. That's male."
Nikumu looked down blushing. "Yes..."
"Ah, I see. Okay then, who? If you don't mind me asking."
"...honestly?" Nikumu bit his lip, "...you" He finally said, meekly.
Rezuka smiled, and replied, "Why me?"
"Well, because, without caring about...the consequences, you took me in. I'm just a boy, younger than you, and well, to be blunt, a murderer. And, you're still caring for me... giving me shelter, food, well drink. And..." He turned a deep shade of crimson, "I think that you are...rather attractive."
Rezuka grinned. "Alright, I think I've put you through enough embarrassment. I'm rather open about my, er, how shall I say? Sexual preference. I tell you what I think of you. And perhaps the reason why I took you in. When I first saw you, I knew that you were in utter dispair. When I took you home, I did see the blood, but I didn't care, because I knew that whatever it was that you had done, you really didn't want it to happen. Thus, I picked you up, and carried you home. When you told me your story, I was filled with sympathy. I started to realize that I cared. I cared a lot. About what had happened. I too, have sufffered because of bullies, but because I am so open about my differences, they stopped bothering me." He laughed, "Or it may have been the fact that I was a senior. Either way, they left me alone. No snide remarks, no evil looks. I realized that other people that were picked on needed help. I started becoming someone like your Daisuke. Someone to stick up for someone else. I was pretty good at it, but occasionally, some bullies just wouldn't stop." He paused and sighed, "It wasn't always how I wanted it to be, but I still tried my best. Now, to stop with my not so interesting past, I'll tell you what I think of you. I think you were once a kind and caring boy, but since the times when people picked on you, that little boy hasn't come out for a long time. Until just recently, when you told me that you had feelings for me." Nikumu blushed. "But, anyway. It's late... why don't we watch a movie or something, get our minds off the troubles in life, okay?"
Nikumu nodded, "Okay... what do you want to watch?"
"How about a nice romance?" Rezuka lughed.
Nikumu laughed along with him, "Okay, as long as it's not too mushy." The both smiled and leaned back on the couch.
After about an hour, Rezuka peered over to Nikumu. He had fallen asleep on the older boys shoulder. Rezuka smiled and let him be. He watched the rest of the movie, and then turned it off. Without disturbing the sleeping boy, he covered him with a blanket, before he fell asleep himself. Rezuka woke up in the morning, and found Nikumu still asleep and holding on to his legs. He chuckled and shook his head before quietly shaking the boy awake. Nikumu yawned and stretched and wiped his eyes. He found his eyes meeting navy blue ones, and he yawned again. Rezuka grinned and asked him how he slept. "Very well," Nikumu said softly.
"Well, I hate to break the mood, but I would like to break the fast. What would you like?" Rezuka replied.
"Mmm... pizza..." Nikumu said while getting up off the couch.
"Pizza?! How about a nice omlette? I can't make pizza." Rezuka answered with a chortle.
"Okay... but I just like pizza. Omlettes are good too... with lots of cheese." the younger boy responed.
Rezuka nodded, "Alright, cheese omlettes it is." He got up and went to the kitchen.
Nikumu followed, "So... how old are you, anyway? Seventeen, Eighteen? You said you were a senior right? I am... er I was a junior."
"Me? I'm seventeen. And yeah, I'm a senior, but it's Saturday, so, no school."
Nikumu frowned, "No school for me ever..." Rezuka walked over, wearing an apron.
"Well, when I go to school, you can... do whatever you want, as long as you stay here. And besides, I'm only in school for two more months. Then you can have me here twenty-four-seven."
"Okay. But, I'll never be able to leave."
"Yeah, you will, I'll get your name cleared if it takes me to hell and back. It'll be tough, but... you can say that your dog did it. He's... gone now, so there is nothing they can do." Rezuka said firmly.
"Yeah, but the knife... it's in his back... I, I put it there. A dog couldn't do that. It also has my fingerprints on it... and blood from my arms..." Nikumu replied sadly.
Rezuka's eyebrows shot up. "That reminds me, how's your arm?" He said gesturing toward Nikumu's bandaged limb.
"Oh, it doesn't hurt if that's what you mean."
"Good..." He said while taking out a pan. "Hey, Nikumu, do you think you could get some eggs out of the fridge for me?"
"But... my gloves?" He said as he held out his hands.
"Oh... take them off, the blood... hmm, put them by the sink, I'll clean them. And your other clothes too." He put the pan on the stove.
"Yeah, sure," Nikumu took of his gloves, and put them by the sink, "But... what am I going to wear while your washing my clothes. I can't just walk around naked!"
"Oh? And why not?" Rezuka replied with a laugh. Nikumu looked shocked "Just joking, I'm just saying that if you did want to, well, walk around naked, I wouldn't care." Nikumu blushed again, and became interested in his shoes. "And, in fact, I wouln't mind seeing that..." Rezuka added under his breath so Nikumu couldn't hear. The older boy picked up a cheese grater, "Nikumu, can I have those eggs now? And some cheese, please?"
"Oh, sorry..." Nikumu mumbled and got the items from the refrigerator. He handed them to Rezuka, and their hands brushed. Nikumu took a sharp breath, and sat down at the table. He hadn't told Rezuka, but ever since he had worn gloves, his hands had become extra sensitive to touch, and their hands brushing had felt a lot more than he would've expected. Rezuka shook his head, and continued making the omlettes. He turned around and poured the mix into the pan.
"Nikumu... may I ask you question?"
"Hmm?" Nikumu answered still going over the hand issue.
"Why did you take a sharp breath when my hand touched yours?" He said with a slight upcurve of the lip.
"Oh... that? My, er, well, since I've worn gloves, my skin on my hands are, is sensitive to touch...like three times as sensitive..." He said slowly.
Rezuka nodded, "Okay... I just wanted to know. I thought I hurt you or something."
"No... it didn't hurt..." Nikumu replied. 'It didn't hurt, it felt like someone lifting me up to cloud 9 is all...' Nikumu thought to himself. Rezuka smiled and returned to making breakfast. 'this is going to be an interesting relationship...' The younger boy thought, "very interesting.'
The older boy waited for the silence to end, and to his surprise, Nikumu broke it. "You know, I don't even know your name..."
Rezuka looked shocked, and looked around. "You don't? I thought I told you. Well, in any case, it's Rezuka. Rezuka Taikito. And you?"
