The end of the world came quite unexpectedly for everyone.  There was no cataclysm, no comet from space, no raining of fire and brimstone, no nuclear war, no apocalypse - yet at 10:56 AM, December 21, 2083, the world as humankind knew it came to an end.

The arrival of the winter solstice that year brought a new era to the world as well as new light to the winter.  Some said it was fate, some said it was karma, some said it was too much of a coincidence and probably related to the FBI and UFOs - whatever the cause, our world and the unseen worlds around it shifted into the same plane of existence.  In one instant, humankind found themselves facing a brand new world of industrialization and science overlaid with magic and mystery.  The 'demons' of the old world became next-door neighbors and the legendary monsters of the seas were not so legendary any more.

The ramifications on the planet itself had been negligible - a bit more population overall, some adjustments to the climate and environments, and small permanent changes here and there.  Within a year the planet had settled itself back into relative stability.  The ramifications for humankind, however, had fallen just short of catastrophic.

The world's major religions suffered the most - the sudden changes brought about speculation of the End Times and great revelations.  When life continued on, many disillusioned people lost their faith.  Christianity, Judaism and Islam, the predominant three religions of the world, had at that point only been holding on tenuously at best.  The previous century of fracturing, quarrelling and war had left them on the brink and the disillusionment of their members sent them over.  Some held on, but none of them would ever again claim the predominance they'd once had. The Earth became an amalgam of beliefs, peoples, magic, technology and species that coexisted not quite peacefully.

Not far behind the world religions fell the world leadership.  Governments of all types found themselves hard pressed to control a populace who was out of control with fear, as well as new populations of people who had never seen or experienced human government.  Repression led to deadly rebellion and laxity led to outrageous chaos.  While many countries worked out better forms of their previous government to accommodate the changes, many others had to start over from scratch.

The resulting chaos set a domino effect in motion that collapsed, twisted and rebuilt all aspects of society - economy, family, education, even the most seemingly insignificant Ma and Pop Store was inevitably affected.  As the year 2100 dawned, the world had just begun to pull itself out of a downward spiral.  What it found when it peeked above the swirling mass of confusion and new experience was a world ripe for magnificent change.
