Chapter 2~Pasts Forgotten!
~~~At the time of the wolf incident at the enchanted pool. Garrett was 10, his brother Peter 11 and his oldest brother Jason 12. Although at the time Garrett didnt know it but Tessa was only 7. She had looked younger. She had been thin and frail. Small and tinier than a child her age. After that night Garrett nor the other princes' ever saw Tessa as they grew up. That very night the king had ordered two of his Knights to take the small child Tessa to a convent about 3 days west of Castle Greystone. There Tessa would be taken care of by the nuns and taught the ways of being the future wife of a prince. One of the agreements he had made upon his oath with the woodsman, was to allow Tessa to reach her eightenth birthday before she was wed to the young prince. Of course the request had been odd. Most girls married younger, around 15 or 16 if she was royalty, if peasant then alot younger some times. But the woods man had been adament and the King had given his vow. The king however did worry about his son. Most princes' were married off about the same time if not younger than female children, thus insuring the lineage of the thrown. As it was even at 12, young Jason had been betrothed to his future queen Katherine since the day of her birth to King Demus of the Eastern Kingdom of Amerain. Peter had yet to be betrothed yet, and now Garrett was at 10 to the woodsmans daughter. Thats where things began to get sticky.
~~~It had been six years since the incident at the pool. As like most children were want they often forgot about things that happened when they were younger. Thus the case with Garrett. He was sixteen and totally head over heels in love with the daughter of an Earl. Doreen. She had beautifull grey eyes and shiny blonde hair that shone like gold. Her laughter was like bells upon his ears and her smile like the sun. What made matters only worse, was the fact that Doreen was a major flirt and had not spared Garrett the brunt of her charms or the treasure of her virginity. On a night of a party and with a bit much to drink. Doreen and Garrett had gotten carried away and had made love. For Garrett it was the most magical night of his life. One he would never forget, and one that proved beyond a doubt that he and Doreen were meant for each other. So it almost killed him when he found out that the party they had had the night he had taken Doreens virginity was to celebrate and seal the pact between King Rufus and Doreens father Lord Dorian Earl of FallCrest. Prince Peter Greystone had just been betrothed to the Lady Doreen of FallCrest.
~~~When Garrett heard of this his heart ached in ways it never had before. On one hand he felt betrayed that his brother Peter, whom he was close to, would wed his only love, and on the other hand angered that his father would do this to him. His father had KNOWN that he had fallen in love with Doreen. Doreen had been at the castle for 6 months prior to the party and it had been plain to everyone that he had fallen for the spoiled but beautifull 14 year old Doreen. He could not understand why his father would do this to him, and decided to confront his father about it.
"Why? Why did you do this father?" Garrett all but roared. He was sixteen yes, but he was already tall and quite built for his age. His voice was that of a man, deep and booming.
"Why what Garrett?" Rufus asked with slight annoyance. He knew exactly what his son was referring to but he had hoped that his son would not question it. It broke his heart to know he would be hurting his youngest son by this betrothal, but Peter needed a noble wife and the Earl of FallCrest was a very powerfull ally. And since both his oldest and youngest sons were betrothed already it left only Peter.
"You know exactly what I mean father!..how could you betroth Peter to Doreen?" Garrett asked with bitterness.
"Because in order for our alliance to be complete there needed to be a marriage between the two families, and Doreen is his only child and the thought of being a princess was incentive enough for Lord Dorien." King Rufus replied with a little agrevation. He did not like to be questioned about desicions concerning the kingdome, not even by his sons.
"But she doesnt LOVE HIM!" Garrett yelled.
"How do you know she doesnt love him" the King asked with a raised eyebrow. He had been there when Lord Dorien had asked his daughter if she was willing to marry Peter. The child was spoiled rotten and the Earl had actually given his daughter a choice wether to marry or not. This was never done, but it was not unheard of. He had seen the look on the young girls face. She had not been heartbroken to say the least, in fact she looked quite pleased by the proposal and accepted.
"Because she loves me!.." Garrett yelled.
"First of all lower your voice!...I may be your father but I am King as well and you will respect me!" came the kings not beyond irritated voice. Garrett had the decency to lower his head in respect and lower his voice.
"You knew that I loved her father..and she loves me as well." came Garretts more lowered, but no less emotionless tone of voice. You could tell he was hurting and Rufus as father hated that.
"Have you forgotten Garrett that you are already betrothed?" he asked. At first Garrett looked shocked and confussed and then like a hammer had hit him on the head he recalled his betrothal to the woodsmans daughter.
"You had forgottten had you not?" his father asked.
"Yes..but what does it matter now?? Why must I marry her?? she is beneath me father..she is but a peasant and I am royalty..do I not deserve the same right that Peter and Jason do? Am I not worthy enough to be wed to someone of my own status and station? Why must I be made a fool of?? Why must I keep a promise that I had nothing to do with?" Garrett asked, his voice rising with each word. He was much to worked up to see the look in his fathers eyes.
"HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THAT IS WAS YOU WHO DARED YOUR BROTHERS TO GO INTO THE FORBIDDEN FOREST THAT NIGHT? THAT IS WAS YOUR ANTICS THAT COULD OF COST ME THE LIVES OF ALL MY SONS??? THE HEIR TO MY THRONE AS WELL?? HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THAT IT WAS THIS PEASANT GIRLS FATHER WHO VALIANTLY SAVED YOUR LIFE?? IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR THE SACRIFICE OF A PEASANT THEN NON OF YOU WOULD BE HERE NOW TO DISRESPECT ME LIKE THIS?" The king roared in all his anger and Garrett looked at his father and bowed his head once more. His father only yelled when he was truelly mad. His father had always told him that a king did not need to yell to make his point or to intimidate his advesaries. So when King Rufus yelled it was a scary sight to behold.
"I am sorry father I meant no disrespect..but does not this valiant woodsman disrespect you and I by having asked for the impossible?..Was he not disrespecting you when he asked for his common born daughter to be elevated to the status of a princess? A station she was never meant to hold?" Garrett asked more calmly but still angerly.
"What makes you think that the woodsman was the one who asked me for all this?" came the Kings reply and Garrett looked shocked.
"But you said...you said you gave him your oath..a blood oath to..too"
"I did, but the woodsman asked me for not but one thing, to make sure his daughter was taken care of for she had no one else...it was I who made the vow, offered the hand of my third born son to the daughter of the woodsman..it was I who had sealed my promise by giving him my blood oath before he breathed his last breath."
"But..but why father?? why would you do such a thing??" Garrett asked in hurt and confussion. To know that the woodsman had not asked for this but that his father had offered it of his own free will was much to take in. He felt betrayed all over again.
"Why do you think I did it Garrett?? I watched the man dying in my arms, dying from wounds he got protecting the most precious things in my life..my sons...and by his actions he not only saved my sons and my kingdom but he also left his daughter an orphan...what would you have had me do Garrett?? Forgotten what the man had done for me? Cast the child out to some orphanage or to serve as a slave to some noblemans home or peasants hovel when she lost her father as he saved the lives of MY children? MY sons? MY reasons for living? What would a kingdom be worth to me with out the lives of my sons? My heirs? I would of promised him anything that night for giving me my children back to me...for what he did I did not think that having his daughter marry my third born was much to offer him." replied Rufus with much emotion. Garrett had never seen his father like that.
~~~After that Garrett had not broughten up the betrothat to Tessa, but he also loved Doreen with all his heart. That night he snuck into Doreens room and asked her to run away with him. He had loved her enough to give up his title and his wealth and cast his back upon his family, just to be with her. Garrett would never forgett that night, and forget the lesson it had taught him. Love was a joke, it served as nothing more than to make you weak and pathetic. That night Doreen had laughed at him, rediculed him and told him that he was mad if he thought she would give up her chance to be a princess and all the wealth that came with her station in life. To add salt to his wounds she had told him that she had never loved him, she had relished the flirting and the other things, but all along she had known she was to wed Peter, but the whole time she had been at the castle, Peter had never looked twice at her, and she was not one to be ignorned, so she had wanted to make him jealous, what better way than to flirt with his younger brother? A brother who she and others knew would one day wed a peasant woman. That night she had laughed evilly at him and told him that he was the joke of the kingdom.
~~~That night Garretts entire life had changed. His heart had become cold and bitterness nested in his blood. So he was a laughing stock was he? The joke of the Kingdom? He would show them all. He would make them respect him. No one would ever laugh at him again. And no one would ever touch his heart. So he would keep his fathers vow. He would marry the woodsmans daughter, but only to keep the vow. In his eyes she would be nothing more than that. He would never love her. He would never be loyal to her, like his brother Jason was to Kathrine. So he would technically be married, but in his eyes and his heart, he wold continue to live as he always did. A Prince, A Knight, and a bachlor.
