Chapter 3: Visitor

“Renee…Renee…Stop crying!” Evan yelled as Renee sobbed on his arm. She looked up Evan's eyes as she said, “Why? I'm your fucking cousin Evan…. I have a right to cry!”

“Not by me.” Evan contradicted. “I don't like women crying over me…. It makes me feel…sad.”

“Why?”

“I don't know…I just feel so sad. Mina used to….”Evan stopped and lowered his head. The door opened suddenly, and a doctor came in.

“Hello, I'm Dr. Peterson, Evan's primary doctor. You can just call me Sara, ok?” She smiled and walked closer to Evan. “How are you doing?”

“Gravely ill.” Evan said, depressed.

“Eh…you don't want to feel that way. You sound like you're depressed.” Sara said.

“I am depressed. I just lost my wife to my homicidal father. I'm been abused all my life. I'm cursed with these damn psychic powers!” Evan slammed his fists on the bed. “I've been cutting. My wife always caught me cutting.”

“I see….” Sara fingered the scars on Evan's arms. “How about I'll sign you up for therapy?”

“I'm fine; I just got out a year ago.”

“He needs it again. Sara, go ahead and sig-…. OUCH!” Renee yelped as Evan pinched her arm. “Keep your mouth closed or I'll seal it shut, Renee.” He barked.

“Why do you hate your powers so much?” Sara asked, tilting her head.

“Throughout my life, I've been criticized all over because who I am or what I have. I sometimes think that they are jealous, but other times, I don't know what to think. Me being a Half-Breed seems to be the center of all this. I kinda think that this is the reason why my father abused me.”

“Hmm….” Sara said to herself. “Well, despite the emotional problems, you're okay. You need to sign out and you're all set. Renee, can you sign him out?”

“Sure! I'll go!” Renee kissed Evan on his forehead. “I'll see you in the car.” She walked out of the room. Sara turned, facing the door.

“You have a very happy cousin. But, I suggest that you tell her what happened when she was little.” She said, frowning.

“What happen-…oh, that. I wanted it to stay out of my mind…I hate thinking about her mother.” Evan said. “I'll break Renee if I tell her what really happened.”

“It'll relieve you of some of your pain if you tell the truth, Evan. It doesn't matter if you're afraid that it'll hurt the person that you tell it to. Well, it's up to you to tell her.”

“I know.” Evan sat up.

It was Friday afternoon, and Evan was exhausted. He looked pale and weak, and his breathing was shallow. He has just arrived home from the hospital Tuesday morning, and Sara told him to take it easy.

Evan didn't take the advice.

He still did regular things around the house. He took Carly to school, cooked, cleaned, and watered the plants outside. Renee told Evan over and over that she'll take care of all of Evan's duties, and he needed to rest. Still, Evan didn't take the advice, and he finally collapsed in the middle of cleaning the hallway.

“Evan!” Renee screamed as she rushed over to Evan's body. “I told you to rest! I fucking told you to rest!”

Evan eyes were wide open and he was muttering something that Renee couldn't hear. He finally closed his eyes and went into a deep sleep.

Renee, with tears in her eyes, was forced to drag him into bed.

“God hates me.” Renee said to her friend Carmen. It was Saturday morning, and they were sitting outside a coffee shop.

“Don't say that! Trust me, He doesn't. You have a very negative mind.” Carmen said back and Renee scratched her head. “Really Carmen, my cousin is sick, I haven't passed one single college entrance exam, and I haven't had a boyfriend in years!” She yelled, gaining attention from the table next to her.

Carmen laid her head down, still looking straight at Renee. “I can understand that your cousin is sick...but your college entrance exams?”

“I'm always late to the test meet.” Renee shrugged.

“Heh, don't blame that on God...that's your fault. No boyfriend in years?! Now I'm shocked.” Carmen said, almost bursting out in laughter. Renee elbowed her hard. “What the hell are you laughing about?!” She screeched, once again gaining attention from other tables.

“Nothing at all, Renee.” Carmen chuckled.

“Friends.” Renee said under her breath, getting up and slamming the chair under the table. She walked away quickly, as Carmen called her back to pay the tab.

Evan was now awake, watching T.V. in the den. He looked backwards as Renee stood in the doorway.

“Where the hell have you been?” He asked.

“I thought I told you to stay in bed.” Renee replied.

“Where the hell have you been?” Evan asked again.

“I thought I told you to stay in bed.”

Evan rolled his eyes and continued watching the T.V. Renee sat next to him on the couch. “How do you feel?” She asked.

Evan tilted his head. He was still concentration on the T.V. Renee decided to go for it and bring up something that will pry his attention off of it for a while.

“Is it true that Uncle Thomas abused you as a child?” She asked. Evan closed his eyes and asked, “Why ask?”

“Just answer the damn question, Evan.” Renee snapped.

Evan turned off the television set and swallowed hard. “Dad...he....” His heart began to beat faster.

“Evan?” Renee looked at Evan's pale face.

“Yes...he did.”

“Oh.” Renee looked down. Evan's hand gripped the arm of the couch.
“He beat me...and once tried to rape me.” He said. Renee gasped and laid a hand over her mouth. “And then he tried to kill me afterwards.” Evan continued.

“No, no...Evan no!” Renee jumped on top of Evan. He hugged her tightly.

“I'm okay.... Renee...don't....”

“No, you're not! Every since, we thought that you just ran away from home...for no reason. But you really ran away because of this! Renee said, muffling herself in Evan's chest.\

“All I want to know is how do you remember that? You were 3 when that happened. And besides,” Evan turned his head. “I didn't run away from home, I...disappeared.”

Renee looked up. “What?!”

“I disappeared that night. I can't explain why, but I found myself in the middle of the woods when I woke up.” Evan explained.

“People don't disappear without a reason, my dear.” A strange voice said. Both Evan and Renee turned around see a person in a black cloak, standing in the doorway. Evan shot straight up, with Renee still clinging around his neck.

“Who are you?” He barked.

The cloaked person, who was obviously a woman because of her voice, began to pull the hood off of her head.

Evan's eyes opened wide at the sight of her face.

“Mom....” Evan said, in awe at the middle-aged woman in front of him. Renee still was hanging on to his neck, in awe too. “Auntie Adelia....”She said.

Adelia looked pretty young for her age, wore glasses, and had long red-brown hair. Whenever she smiled, it seemed like it was the most beautiful smile in the world.

“Sweetheart....” Adelia held her arms out wide. Evan dropped Renee and quickly hugged his mother. “Evan, I haven't seen you in so many years....” Adelia said as she kissed her son's forehead. “But, I came here to warn you.” She quickly pushed Evan away.

“W-What's going on Mom?” Evan asked.

“I think Thomas is coming...to finish his job. You, Renee, and Carly need to leave. Where are the twins?”

“They're at their house.” Renee said.

“Good, good.... Come on Evan, get Carly. We have to go.” Adelia said, with tension rising in her voice.

“B-But Mom....” Evan started. Adelia took both of his arms and started shaking him. “Go Evan, or do you want everything that happened Sunday to happen again?!”

Evan shook his head. He had never seen his mother act like this before. Without hesitating again, he quickly ran out of the den, upstairs, and into Carly's room, busting the door wide open.

“DAD!!!” Carly screamed.

“Not now Carly! Come on; pack up some of your clothes and things. We have to go.”
“What's going on?”

“Don't ask right now! No time for questions Carly!”

Outside, the wind picked up speed. Evan saw this as he looked out Carly's window, onto the backyard.

Suddenly, it was too late. A bright light appeared outside of Carly's door. Evan quickly shut it, pulled Carly into the corner, and stood in front of her, protecting her. The brightness of the light become more and more intense as the lights went out and the floor began to shake.

“Get down Carly.” Evan commanded, and Carly did what she was told.

“Dad...wha-....”

“SHHHH!”

The door flew open and Carly screamed. She held tight onto Evan's back as a force started to pull them both towards the light, which was brighter and covering up the whole doorway. Evan. Holding on for his and Carly's lives, squinted his eyes to avoid blindness.

“Evan!” A voice said. Evan looked at its direction, towards the light, which wasn't blinding anymore. “Evan!” The voice became more and more familiar to Evan. It called his name again and suddenly, Evan passed out.
