Fan Fiction ❯ Broken Wings ❯ Part 1 ( Chapter 1 )
-A white wings original story. -
"Time, Place, and Event don't have any hold here. In this world of imaginary themes there is no reason for reason. Life is an insignificant stop in the paradox of dreams. So don't bother me with details and expensive signs for this unpaved road. It doesn't matter."
-- White Wings
Broken Wings
The sharp sound of flesh hitting flesh echoed through the deep cave. It was followed by the sound of a soft body falling to the rocky floor.
The body of a young boy lay limply on the floor of the cave. His left arm ws at an odd angle, and blood from a deep gash mixed with his soft white hair on the right side of his face.
"MY BOY!" said an angry feminine voice.
A tall, lean woman with sharply pointed ears was standing in disbelief a few feet away from her son's unconscious body.
"MY BOY!" She screamed and jumped at a mountain of a man standing in front of six other, smaller, men. He held in his hand the thick wooden board that he had sent crashing into the small boys left shoulder. Her claw like fingernails ripped deep, bloody gashes in his chest and arms before her had time to react.
By the time he fell back ward and hit the ground with a tremendous thud he was already dead. His six partners stared at him for a moment and then attacked the mother. The battle lasted all of twenty minutes in which three more people died and the remaining three all had injuries and the mother was dead.
"Damn but that demon just wouldn't go die!" Jon, one of the reaming men commented.
"Ay, I agree." Said Kenith.
"We lost four men, FOUR MEN, on this little escapade! That cub had better be worth it!" The last man shouted.
"Sorry Sin." Kenith was kneeling next to the body of the unconscious boy. "Koren," He gestured to the large man that had died first. " shattered his left shoulder."
"DAMN!!"
"He's ok otherwise..." Kenith added quietly.
Jon joined Kenith next to the boy while Sin leaned against the wall fuming.
"Ken, this thing was to much trouble not to sell. Lets just try anyway."
"All right Jon, we'll try and sell `im but I can almost guarantee he won't sell, even with that pretty mane of hair."
The boys' body shook slightly and he moaned quietly. The two men looked down at the young demon as he raised his head a few centimeters off the ground. His fogged eyes stared blankly up at the men and then he slowly shut them again and fell into darkness once more.
Sure enough, for almost two years the young demon didn't sell. Finally Sin made the decision to give him to another slave trader. Which he did. And for another year "Zero" sat in the back of the cart, leaning against the side and back wall. Most of his time he spent sleeping and when he wasn't doing that he was staring blankly out at the crowds or scenery.
His arm had healed, but he had very limited use of it. It wasn't strong and he could just barely move the fingers of his left hand. It was this handicap that kept him in the back of that cage for 3 years un-noticed and unwanted. Also, it the time he'd been captive he had acquired a violent attitude toward men. The other demons all gave him plenty of space, even if they had to squish together. He was young, the youngest one there but none of the others wanted to risk getting seriously injured.
In a town called Heartage, a place he had been too a few times, as he slept in his corner and all the other demons were out so the crowd of buyers could see them a pair of children snuck up to the side of the cage. They were twins, which as a bad omen to some, and you could tell. One was a girl and was a boy but they both sported shoulder length hair tied back in small ponytails. Their eyes were a sea green color and sparkled with youthful amusement.
The boy reached his hand in and tugged softly on "Zero's" old, worn shirt. In a now natural reaction, "Zero's" eyes shot open and he switched his position sharply to glare at who had touched him. He watched the children for a moment then settled back down into his sitting position against the wall, this time a little further away from the silted wall. He held his left arm with is right and bowed his head forward again and continued to sleep.
"See, I told you he wasn't dead." The little boy poked his sister.
"Then how come he isn't out with all the other demons?" She replied rubbing her arm where he'd poked her.
"How should I know? Maybe its because of an injury or something..." he guessed.
"Lets go ask!" the girl piped up.
"Good idea!" the boy replied with equal enthusiasm.
They trotted up to one of the trader that was standing next to the cage.
"How come that one is still in there?" they asked in unison.
"He's not dead." the boy said
"So how come he's not out with the others?" the girl asked
He looked down at them, and then smirked at the young duo.
"How do you know he's not dead?" he asked lightly
"Cause I pulled on his shirt." The boy beamed proudly.
His eyes widened and the looked at the boy and then at "Zero", then at the boy again. He broke out into laughter.
"Hey Toti this kid says he touched old Zero and he's still got a arm!" He pointed at he boy as the other guard looked at them.
Toti looked at "Zero" and then at the boy and laughed as well. The twins frowned
"I just wanted to know why he wasn't out with the others..." The little girl sobbed and the man stopped laughing, he looked down at her.
"So'k kid, sheesh I didn't mean to make you cry, ol' Zero's got a bad arm and a nasty temper. Not even the other demons can get near him, let alone any of us."
"Oh..." they said in unison.
They looked back at "Zero's" sleeping form and then walked off sadly.
"Poor kids must of thought he was cute."
In the main crowd a small thin woman stood near the font. She only came to these gatherings because her children liked to look at the demons. She never bought one. She had no need to and she didn't like the idea of keeping other creature that even resembled humans as pets or slaves. She did most of the work around her household with help from her young twins. He husband had died shortly before the twins were born so she dealt with everything.
He children suddenly came up behind her and whispered something in her ears when she bent down to see what they were so excited about. She smiled and stepped forward out of the crowd to the platform.
"Excuse me! Yes you!" she caught the attention of the auctioneer who had just finished selling another demon to another man.
"Yes how can I help you?" he said with practiced cheer.
"Hypothetically speaking, how much, if you could, would you sell the demon in the cart for?" She gestured in the cage where "Zero" was sleeping.
"He's not worth but nothing lady why do you ask?"
"How much would you ask for him?"
"No more than 100pen, I told you, he's got a bad arm and he's to aggressive. Why?"
She handed the man 100pen and walked casually through the parting crowd to the cage and opened the lock herself. Her children stood at the foot of the fold down stairs and waited for their mother, that is, until the guards and auctioneer plowed through them in an attempt to "save" their mother.
"Lady come out of there! That things dangerous!" The men yelled.
Zero glared at them blankly and he growled softly at them. The men stopped in their tracks. But the woman continued to come quietly forward. Zero didn't seem to see her until she was a few feet away. He turned his head to look up at her but made no move to attack her. The men watched her in silent, horrified, awe. They couldn't believe their eyes. This woman was practically standing right next to the demon that nearly killed every single one of them at some time or another.
The woman kneeled down next to the demon. He was just like her children had described him to her. He was thin and young, and he had the most amazing white hair tied back in a messy braid. She reached out slowly and stroked his free bangs softly. He flinched away from the touch but did nothing more.
"Poor thing." Her voice spoke softly and it almost sounded like a slow running river.
He demon blinked a few times as if trying to clear his foggy eyes but to no avail. He slowly, without realizing it faded back to sleep and slumped over into her arms. She smiled. As she picked his surprisingly light body up and carried it past the men. That stood frozen to the spot at what they just witnessed. As she walked past she whispered.
"Woman's touch." And walk on down the road followed by her two children.
As they walked down the dirt road toward their home the children started shooting questions off at there mother.
"Isn't he cute?!"
"I hope he's strong, he looks strong don't he!?"
"Can I name him!?"
"He's got a name!"
"No he doesn't!"
"Yes he doses those guys called him Zero!"
"That's not his name! I don't match him!"
"How do you know!"
"I just do!"
She creased her eyebrows as she listened to her children argue.
"SSSHHHHHHHHhhhh" she shushed them. "You two are too loud, you want to wake him up?"
The children looked at the demon their mother held in her arms. His head was rested against her shoulder and he was breathing slowly trough his mouth, which was open just the slightest. Every now and then his ears would twitch voluntarily.
"Sorry..." they whispered as they came around the bend into the view of a large farm.
They're where six cows and two horses out in a field to the right of the main house. The barn and a small turnout pen where on the left Along with a chicken coop and a tack shed. A small well was in the center of the courtyard. Surrounded by wild flowers except for the small path that lead up to its edge. A large garden shared the courtyard with the well. Along with a short row of dog houses in front of which sat three dogs. A large, long-legged one, white in color with a dark brown spot on its right ear and eye sat in front of the one furthest to the right. The one in the middle was also of similar make and size except for the fact that he was solid jet black. The one on the left was smaller then the other two but lost no points in looks. His shocking blue eyes were accented by the golden color of his coat. He had a white chest, a got-milk chin and four white paws. On his back, in the shape of wings, were two large white spots followed by a white tipped tail.
The twins where just about to shout for the dogs but her mother shushed them again and motioned with her head to the sleeping boy in her arms. So instead they ran to the dogs, who were equally as excited to see there masters home. The golden dog bypassed the open arms of the children and coolly walked to his master.
"Hello Fallen. Where you good while Jean was away?"
The dog nodded his head in a human like manner and then followed her at her side into the house while the children played with their companions.
There was a room at the end of the hall next to hers that she opened with her foot and stepped into.
"Lights." She said softly and Fallen switched on the lights with his nose. "Good boy."
She laid the young demon on the dusty bed the occupied the corner of the room. Soft setting-sun light spilled in the windows of the room. She pulled the blankets out from underneath him and took them outside to shake the dust off. She retuned and laid them over his thin form. She tucked the ends under the end of the mattress.
"Up." She pointed to a spot next to the unconscious boy and Fallen walked around the bed and jumped up and lay down next to him. He whined and nudged the boys cheek with is wet nose.
The boy moaned softly and as he turned his head his eyes fluttered open and looked at the dog lying next to him. Instinctively he tried to push himself up and way from the dog but found there was a firm hand at his chest that kept him pined to the bed. He looked at the face of the woman who was holding him down. He remembered her, the thought; she was in the cage with him. He looked around and then back to the dog and then to the woman. But this wasn't the cage he was in some sort of room. He pushed himself backward against the headboard.
"Its okay, shhhh..." She moved her hand slowly and caressed his face. He was scared, she could. His eyes held the look a rabbit got when a dog had pinned it in a corner and I knew it was going to die. "I'm not going to hurt you. Its okay." Her voice again flowed like water.
His eyes softened a little but his eyes still looked scared, or what she could see of them did. His long bangs covered them. She brushed her fingers across his forehead to push them aside but stopped and looked concerned. His forehead felt hotter than it should be. She moved her other hand behind his head and trapped his head between her hands. He struggled out of the grip and backed up into the dog that was still lying next to him. He breath faster as her hands reached out for him again. She put her hands on either side of his face and pulled him forward, pressing his forehead to hers. He started to struggle again. A cry caught in his throat.
"You have a fever... Shhh its okay don't fight with me, its okay."
She pulled him into a hug, trapping him in her arms and he cried out in surprise at the gesture of affection.
"I know you don't feel good, It's okay, I'm right here."
He stared at the wall opposite of him and slowly tears ran down his cheeks and when she eventually let him go again, his face glistened with tears. Had it been that long; that long since someone said that it was "Okay"? His head hurt, he couldn't remember whom, just someone important. This woman, she said it was okay, okay. He didn't understand. It hurt.
His thoughts were erratic and without order. It hurt, to think, to breath, to move, he couldn't remember when it hadn't hurt. Not anymore. So he cried.
He sat with is hands in his lap as the woman left to get something, medicine, maybe, what was medicine? The dog that was lying next to him moved and put its nose his hands. It whined softly and liked his hands comfortingly. He wanted to tell the dog something, but his throat was so dry. That would hurt too, it even hurt to growl or whine.
(AN :/: Aw!!! Poor sick baby!! *sniffles and cries of sympathy from the audience* )
The woman returned with something in her hand. A bottle, a red bottle. She sat down next to him again and she opened it with a soft pop. She poured some of the thick, red, liquid into the lid and forced it into his mouth. It tasted horrible and he tried to spit it out but she clasp a hand firmly over his mouth until he swallowed the concoction. She poured more. He flinched mentally when she offered it to him again. She forced it in his mouth when he wouldn't take it willingly. Again he was made to swallow it.
"Oh poor Zero, he has to take that icky medicine..." The young boy that had pulled on his shirt commented from where he peeked in from the doorway.
"His name isn't Zero!" Said the little girl that stood next to him.
"Yes it is!"
"No its not! Right mommy?"
"I don't know Kirily, why don't you be patient and I'll ask him when he's feeling better."
"But Kiri keeps calling him Zero!!" Kirily complained
Name... Mommy? Name, name, Maco... Macoten? My name? Macoten? My name is Macoten.
As Jean tried to get her twins to stop fighting again, the young demon had looked down and was listing to the argument between the two siblings.
"Ma..." he chocked out quietly. All the arguing stopped and everyone looked at him, he could feel their eyes. Even the dog looked at him, its eyes encouraging him to try again.
"Ma... Ma..co."
Fallen continued to encourage him his eyes screamed at the demon `Say it, Come on you can do it!'
"Macot.. te .. te ..n"
"Ma.. co..ten."
`Keep going!'
"Macoten..." he said it, there, finally, he said it. Just like it sounded Ma-co-ten. The dog beamed up at him, its tail wagging furiously.
Jean and her kids looked at Macoten as he smiled slightly and looked up at Jean and his smile twitched, he wasn't sure what to do now so he just stared blankly off into space like he usually did. His eyes, He could see a little clearer, and his head, it didn't hurt as badly as he was used too. It was making him dizzy.
He swayed a little and Jean reached out and steadied him. Her eyes were twinkling with admiration. The children were quiet and the little girl was the first to speak.
"See! I told you his name wasn't Zero!" she poked her brother in the shoulder.
"Owe! Hey!" he shot back.
Jean smiled at him as his eyes started to want to droop an close. She patted him on his good shoulder.
"Go ahead and sleep Macoten, you need the rest. I'll make you something to eat when you wake up. Fallen, down."
The dog looked at Jean and for the first time in either of there lives he didn't follow her directions. He moved over and curled up next to Macoten's hip and looked up at her wagging his tail. She sighed and nodded.
Macoten lay down and let his eyes close. The soft warmth next to his leg made him feel safe and for the first time in 3 years he slept without pain or bad dreams.
