Chapter Five
Derian sat in the high backed chair watching Dagger trying to sit with her legs
crossed in the proper fashion for a lady to sit. The full skirts of the sky blue dress
were tangled around her legs making it even harder for her to get it right. Derian shook his
head, laughing silently. The dress had a tight bodice which help push her bust upward,
making it appear like her round, tiny breast were of a decent size. Her well muscled arms
were hidden by the blue gauze that made up the sleeves. Her hair was pinned up, but still
all choppily cut.
"Lady Alexa," Derian said, rubbing his eyes with his thumb and fore finger. "You
should probably take a break."
Dagger growled angrily, clenching her fist and stambed her bare foot. She had
refused the high heeled shoes that Lord Sazic had offered her. Dagger leapt to her feet,
almost tripping over her huge skirt. Derian swallowed a laugh and looked at her seriously.
"Don't call me that!" she shouted. "My name is Dagger!"
Lord Sazic sat off to the left, under one of the large windows along the wall. He
shook his head in distress. Maybe this task had been to great to put on his young nephew.
This girl was impossible. She didn't have an ounce of feminine quality in her except for the
fact that she looked like a woman.
But only because she's in that dress. he thought, laughing silently.
"When we present you to the Noble Houses next month you will have to go by that name
and nothing else." he said, trying to stay calm. "That is the name on the adoption papers
and that is the name you will go by in front of the Noble families."
Kavin was stretched out under window at the end of the hall, the sun dancing off of
the diamond collar that Lord Sazic had made for him. He laughed at the arguing human and his
mistress graced him with on of her famous icy glares. That glare seemed to be the only look
that she'd given anyone for the past month. The large white tiger had to give the human
called Derian. Dagger had become somewhat of a lady this past moon.
"She still has the marks of her killings." Kavin said. "In her heart she will always
be a killer."
"What'd you say?!" Dagger growled back.
Kavin shook his head. "Nothing, Lady Alexa." the tiger said, his tone dripping with
mockery.
Dagger growled, ground her teeth together, and screamed in anger. She bent down and
pulled a dagger from its sheath around her calf. Lord Sazic leapt out of his seat so
abruptly that it toppled to the marble tiled floor with a loud clatter. Derian ran at her,
but the thin blade had already started to part the cotton fabric of the dress. All Derian
could do was stand there as the gown fell to the ground and a naked assassin stood before
them all.
"What did you do?!" Lord Sazic shouted. "That dress was expensive."
Dagger smirked. "That's your problem." she said and moved off towards the door.
"Lady Alexa!" Derian shouted, his face very red with embarrassment.
She'd had some many scars. Derian thought in amazement.
Dagger stormed out of the room, the large cherry wood doors slamming shut behind
her. Lord Sazic's face was crimson with anger. All he could do was jab his finger at the
door and stamp his foot. The youth sighed heavily, following the young woman towards her
quarters. Kavin loped past him, following his raging mistress. Derian still hadn't gotten
over the fact that she had sliced the gown in half and stood before himself and his uncle
for a moment naked as a new born baby.
Derian arrived outside her door, rapped rapidly twice, and entered. "What were you
thinking?!" he demanded upon entry. "I've tried to teach you how to be a lady and all you've
done is be a bitch about it!"
Dagger stood before her mirror, naked. She whirled around and glared at him. He
stopped suddenly, taking in the seriousness of her old wounds. A long scar went from the
top of her rib cage, around her back, and down to her tail bone. Another scar ran from the
left side of her right breast, under the nipple, and down to the top of her right side
of her rib cage. Small silver cuts and nicks were all over her body, but those two stood
out the most.
Who had done that to her? Derian wondered.
"What are you staring at?" she asked.
"Your scars." the young man answered honestly.
Dagger bared her teeth in anger. "Haven't you seen scars before, you spoiled brat?!"
she demanded.
Derian nodded. "Of course I have, Lady Alexa." he replied. "However, yours are
something no normal human could have survived."
"I'm a killer!" she shouted. "I'm trained to live when others would die!"
Kavin, who had been relaxing on the luxurious bed when Derian entered, raised his
head and gave Derian a warning growl. Dagger growled back and the tiger's rage subsided,
slightly. The young woman moved to the cherry wood dresser and pulled out a long black
tunic that Derian had ordered for her to wear around her rooms. He knew that she preferred
pants and over-sized tunics so he'd ordered a large supply of them.
"Lady Dagger, you have to stop thinking like a killer and start thinking like a
lady." Derian said, running his hand though his auburn hair. "You have to make the Noble
Houses believe that you are my uncle's adopted daughter and that you belong amoung them or
they'll never trust you."
"But I am a Child of the Night!" she shouted, falling into a crouch.
Derian moved closer to her and lay a hand on his adoptive cousin's shoulder. "Look,
it's going to hard, but that's why I'm here." he said. "You can do it, if you'd only try a
little harder, Lady Dagger."
Dagger laughed. "You finally stopped calling me that stupid name." she said.
Derian chuckled. "Yeah." he said. "I guess getting you angry isn't worth it."
"Thanks." she said, smiling slightly.
On the bed, Kavin chuckled. "I think he likes you." he said.
Derian turned at the sound of the low growl. He looked at the great white tiger in
confusion, but said nothing about his growling. Dagger glared at the huge creature, growling
back at him. For a moment, Derian wondered if the young woman was able to understand him.
He shook his head. Humans didn't understand animals. It was impossible. Dagger looked away
from the tiger and at Derian. Her platinum colored eyes locked with his emerald green eyes.
Derian felt his heart pound hard in his chest as he gazed into those bottomless pools of
platinum.
Those eyes are ones that a man could drown in and not even care that he was unable
to breath. Derian thought. If only the I could make those Nobles gaze into those eyes.
They'd get lost in them and not even care that the world around them still went on.
"What is it?" Dagger asked.
Derian shook his head, feeling like he'd come out of a trance. "Nothing." he replied.
"Nothing, Lady Alexa."
Dagger's brow furrowed. "I thought I told you not to call me that?!" she demanded.
The young Nobleman only laughed, scratching his head. "Sorry." he said. "I meant to
say 'Dagger'."
She snorted in disgust and rose to her feet. "Well, let's get back to the Great Hall
before your uncle has a fit." she said.
"We have to get you another dress." Derian said.
Dagger groaned, rolling her eyes. "Why?" she asked.
"Because you're a lady." he replied, smiling at her.
Dagger glared at him. "I'm a killer." she said. "Not a damned thriller."
Derian laughed. "No one's asking you to thrill them, Dagger." he said. "All we want
you to do is lure the assassin in with your wonderous beauty."
"You have a very cruel sense of humor, you know that?" she asked.
"I didn't mean it as a joke." Derian said, smiling at her. "I was being serious."
Dagger snorted, waving his comment away with her hand. "Just get me another dress
so I can go practice again."
Derian nodded, bowing slightly. "You, m'lady." he said, turned on his heel, and
left her standing in the middle of her room.
Kavin rose to his feet and stretched out. "Well, you've come a long way in this
past moon, I must admit." he said, yawning mightily. "Your mother would be proud."
Dagger snorted and turned to look at her reflection."Would she be so proud of all
the blood I spilt before I came to this point in my life?" she asked the leviatan of a
tiger.
The great white tiger gave the impression of a shrug. "Only the anscestors know the
truth, Dagger." he said. "Only they know what your mother thinks of you."
Dagger's hand when to the area of her rib cage where the long scar was. "I only hope
that in this moment, I'm making her proud." she said.
A tear formed at the corner of her eye and ran down her cheek. Kavin didn't comment,
only averted his face to pretend that he hadn't seen it. Dagger quickly wipped the tear away
and cleared her throat. She continued to gaze at her reflection in the mirror and that is
how Derian found her when he returned some time later with a crimson silk dress slung over
his arm.
Derian sat in the high backed chair watching Dagger trying to sit with her legs
