Chapter Four
No Loyalty to Royalty
Dagger stood before the prince five days after she had tried to assassinate him. She
stood before him, staring him straight in the eyes. All her life she had never given her
loyalty to any living human. No one had ever earned it. Prince Daedryk was pale and the
worse for wear. Who could have done this to him? What assassin had wounded him bad enough
to weaken him so much, but not kill him?
The man who had found her in the forest stood beside her. Neither of them were
bowing before the new king. Dagger still thought of him as an arrogant, annoying prince. Had
it only been five days since he'd murdered his father right in front of her eyes? Kavin let
out a low growl and nudged her with his massive head.
Her attention was turned back to the king. "I want you to find you the man who did
this to me." he ordered.
"How can I find a man when I don't even know what he looks like?!" she demanded.
King Daedryk glared at her. "You little wench!" he growled. "You will do as your
king demands!"
"As far as I'm concerned, your father is still the king!" she growled. "You stole
the title from your father! You didn't earn it!"
The man lay a hand on her shoulder. "Calm down, girl." he whispered. "Just do as he
says and you might live to see another day."
She shoved his hand off of her shoulder, glaring at him. "I'd rather die than help
out this traitorous bastard."
"Humph!" King Daedryk snorted. "I thought you said she would help you out,
Sazic!"
Dagger shook her head. "Oh, I'll do it." she said. "For a price."
"What?!" King Daedryk demanded.
"I said that I'll do as you ask, for a price." she repeated, her hand resting on
Kavin's large head.
Sazic chuckled. "Well, since she's going to do it, I'll call my nephew." he said
and left the room.
Dagger whirled around to the door. "I don't need any help!" she shouted to the
retreating man.
Sazic didn't hear her. He disappeared out of the room and didn't return for another
ten minutes. When Sazic returned, a young man about Dagger's age with shoulder length
auburn hair, emerald green eyes, tanned skin, a deep midnight blue tunic, brown
doe skin pants, and black leather boots entered the room. He wore a bastard sword at his hip
and a bow and a quiver of arrows slung over his back. She stood there, staring at the
young man. He smiled at her, bowing slightly.
"Good day, Lady Dagger." he said.
Dagger was taken aback by his polite manner. "A Noble?!" she shouted. "You expect me
to find a would-be assassin with the help of a Noble?!"
"The man who tried to kill me, was a Noble." he said. "If you're going to find him,
then you going to have to become a Noble. Lord Sazic will adopt you and Derian
will help you learn the ways of a Noble. If you don't find that murderer, I'll have your
head like I planned in the first place."
Kavin growled. "And this is why we never showed any loyalty to royalty before."
he said.
"Damn it!" Dagger growled. "I don't have much of a choice."
Kavin only laughed at her. To the other humans in the room, it sounded like nothing
but a low growl.
