Serge lay awake the rest of the night. Every time he laid on the brink of sleep a dream of that girl being hurt flooded his mind forcing him back into reality. When he thought it was getting close to daybreak he got up and put on his regular attire. He grabbed his swallow that was propped up against the wall near the door of his bedroom and quietly walked out in the hall.

He tried his best not to make the floorboards creak as he went past his mother's and sister's room, which was nearly impossible in the old wooden hut.

Finally he reached downstairs and went over to the kitchen counter. He scribbled down on a piece of paper that he was going to the beach for a walk and would be back soon. He headed out the door ignoring his grumbling stomach.

Outside the cozy hut it was still dark out, but slowly getting lighter with the rising sun. It was very foggy; the air lay heavy with the smell of the sea. He exited the village and made his way through the damp forest.

Serge traveled through the sodden Lizard's Rock. It didn't seem nearly as dangerous as it did last night. He jumped over some fallen remains of coral and exited Lizard Rock.

Serge gasped. The first thing he saw was a girl lay face down in the sand. He also saw the remains of a small boat, which he figured was probably hers. He raced over there to turn her over and see if she was alive. He looked at her sandy, golden blond hair that was matted against her bloody back. As soon as his hand connected with her shoulder as searing pain ran through his arm. He brought his hand away from her on reflex. `What the heck?! Why does it hurt when I touch her? I think I've seen her somewhere before though.'

He looked carefully at her back and saw that it was moving ever so slightly with the inhaling and exhaling of her chest. "At least the girl isn't dead." He whispered to himself.

He took off his vest and draped it over the girl's body. He sat down on the wet sand and looked out to the sea. This was nothing new to him since he did it practically every day. He watched the waves crashing on the beach and retreating back into the sea and listened to the lulling harmony it played. He slowly dosed off to sleep as the sun slowly rose from the horizon.

A couple hours had passed waiting for her to wake up. Serge sat there with his head on his knees and arms wrapped around his legs. He was sleeping yet was still listening to the lulling sound of the waves crashing in and out, over and over.

The girl lay there unconscious yet it looked like she was having an unpleasant dream by the indignant look on her face.

"Where the bloody hell am I?!" Kid yelled into the darkness. An evil, cold laugh surrounded her, sending a chilling feeling down her spine and all the way through her body.

"Show yerself now!!" she yelled trying to mask the fear in her voice. Suddenly there was a clanging of weapons. "I promised I'd protect her! Give her back now!" said a voice that Kid instantly recognized as Serge. There was another clang from the distant battle. Kid could almost hear the ripping of flesh and then a painful yell from Serge.

"Stop!!" she yelled trying to stop the battle. There was a deep cackle from a voice Kid has known all her life, Lynx. She could hear the swiping of his scythe. Serge yelled loudly in pain.

The battle continued for a while with yells from Serge and occasional growls from Lynx. Lynx's deep laugh filled the room knowing this was too easy. There was a final painful call for help from Serge.

"Serge!!" Kid screamed not knowing if this was just a dream or reality.

"I'm sorry Kid…" Serge whispered as a body fell to the ground. Complete silence filled the room. Lynx started laughing in victory. "Finally, I have the Chrono Cross! The world will fall to my power…" He said sinisterly.

"This was far easier than I thought. You did a terrible job protecting him. But do not worry though because this is nothing more than a vision of what will happen. I just can't wait until the day I finally have the Chrono Cross, can you Schala?" he asked her.

"Ya bloody bastard! Yer never getting yer damned claws on Serge or the Chrono Cross! I'll protect him even if it costs me own life!" Kid practically screamed.

"Than why aren't you awake and protecting the Chrono Trigger right now?" he asked with a devious look upon his cat-like face.

Kid opened her eyes to a blur of colors. The colors came together and formed dark, cool, wet sand pressed against her face. She coughed up salty seawater in short gags for breath. Almost instantly she felt a throbbing pain run through her head then it slowly moved through her body. Kid tried to roll over to her back but her body stung all over and wouldn't allow it.

A couple feet away she heard a small familiar snore. `Serge!' Kid's mind instantly clicked despite the pain.

"Serge…" she said trying to make her weakened voice hearable.

"Serge." Kid tried a little louder but the sand muffled her voice. He just sat there, the lullaby of the sea drowning out Kid's plea for help. With every breath she took she could feel a sharp pain running through her lungs. `On the count of three, I'll turn over to my back.' She bargained with herself. `One…Two…Three!' blinking her eyes or taking a breath was very difficult, but rolling over…nearly impossible. She turned over painfully wasting practically what was left of her energy.

Serge woke up to see if the girl was up. He stretched and wiped the sleep out of his eyes. He heard a soft voice call his name. Serge turned to find the girl lying on her back, gasping for breath.

He ran over to Kid's injured body and kneeled over her. "Cureplus…" Kid whispered. Serge quickly fumbled through his elements and cast a Cureplus on her. Kid's large wounds became smaller her minor cuts disappeared allowing her to move better.

She slowly sat up and stared at Serge. He stared back for some time and then said, "Who are you?" He looked carefully in her eyes. Serge saw tears welling up in them.

"I'm sorry, I don't know you…" He said shaking his head with his long bangs covering his blue-purple eyes. Kid sighed sadly. "Yer the same Serge…that's good mate, but you don't remember anything, do ya?" She said turning her eyes down to the Astral Amulet in her hands.

"Remember what?" Serge asked, growing curious. "You wouldn't believe me if I told ya so maybe it's best if I just restored yer memory. But the thing is…do ya want it back? It's gonna hurt you…bad." She said not removing her eyes from the multi-colored necklace.

Kid stood up and brushed some of the sand from her tattered clothes and redid her ponytail. "It's yer decision," she said walking around gathering her dagger and what was left of her supplies. "What are you talking about? I've lived here in Arni all of my life, how could I have forgot anything?"

She was not looking at him, but she felt his questioning stare. Serge's eyes pierced through Kid's body sending shivers down her spine. "Do ya ever wonder what happened that day 2

Kid had trouble concentrating on her conversation with Serge because of the argument within her head.

`Stop it Kid! If you return his memory than the flow of time will be interrupted once again. You'll be putting many lives in danger including his; I erased his memory for a reason!' Schala yelled in the back of Kid's mind. `I need him. He'll be in danger whether I chose to restore his memory or not!' Kid replied quickly to end the argument that had lasted long before the recent words Schala said. She ignored Schala's shouts for her to stop like a child slamming the door on its mother.

"Sometimes…" Serge replied averting his attention some sand that had been tainted with Kid's blood. After an extended period of silence he answered her question in his rarely used voice. "Fine, restore the memory you claim I lost." She turned around smiling the lopsided grin that was long forgotten.

She picked up his chain vest that slid off her when she stood up after the accident. Kid walked toward Serge and stopped 2 feet in front of him. She held out her arm for him to take his vest. Serge took it and slid it over his black shirt. Before his eyes were back on Kid she flew gently into his arms and he welcomed her. As soon as their bodies touched it felt as if a blade sliced through his body; the pain didn't stop but kept coming sharper and harder than before.

Soon memories of his adventures reverberated through him. They flashed by too fast, the good ones were gone to soon. Serge couldn't feel her arms wrapped around his neck. He could only feel pain, he could only think pain. "Get off me!" he cried as memories of hopeless battles, lost friends, stolen dreams rushed through his head. He winced his eyes as punches, kicks, stabs, and slices tore at his body.

He couldn't take it anymore. He pushed at her shoulders but she stayed locked. "Stop it!!" he yelled but nothing he said would get her off, he knew nothing would get her off until he remembered everything.

And the thing was, he wanted to remember everything. Serge knew that if he lasted a little longer, she would reveal herself despite the pains swirling through his mind and body. Even though he thought that, he struggled to get rid of her. The pain was growing more and more.

"Please…just a little longer…I'm sorry." her voice spoke. Steel flashed before his eyes, and he felt a blade go through him. It had been real, he thought. Another slice, he couldn't see. The pain was growing…he knew he could not stay on his feet much longer. The pain…it grew steadily, consuming him, eating him alive…

He knew who he was now, but the memories hurt him, and he wanted to get away. Pictures ran through his mind like a tidal wave crashing onto a beach. The images went by faster and faster until they just ended with a picture of a girl that resembled the girl that was clinging onto to him falling to the ground, lifeless. One last stab worst than all the others pierced through his body making him yell out in pain then fall to the sand.

As quickly as the pain had started, it stopped.

Tears streaked his face and he continued to wince as though it was still happening. Kid regretted having to make him go through this; she hated seeing him like this. She placed her leather glove against his cheek.

Serge opened his eyes at her touch. Kid gave him a small smile feeling her eyes well up with tears. "I can't believe I could have ever forgotten you…Kid…"

"I've finally found ya mate!!" She said leaping into his warm embrace. Serge held Kid like that gently rocking her back and forth.

`He's finally back to me. We're together again…this time for good…'Kid told herself. Suddenly she felt a wave of dizziness sweep over her body. `Oh no, please not now…Now is too perfect.' She thought knowing fully well what her body was going to do yet she fought it off.

"I've missed you so much. It feels like we've been apart an eternity. I've looked everywhere for you…." She said with darkness consuming her body.

"I've missed you too. Ever since that day I fainted on the beach I knew something was missing, I felt it." Serge told the girl in his arms after placing a kiss on top of her golden colored head. "I'll never ever let anyone hurt you, I'll protect you forever…I promise." He whispered.

Kid looked up into Serge's eyes. Her view had become blurry and it twisted around and around. "I pro-promise too…I'll p-protec…" Kid said weakly as her world went black and hung limply in Serge's arms. The last thing she saw was his concerned face yelling something she was unable to hear.
