Matsey watched Elise and then turned her eyes e to her master He was watching Elise without blinking. His features frozen as if in utter shock. When Elise finished Markaim gave himself a visible shake and turned to Matsey. She was looking at him with a grin on her face.
“What is that look for? IT is as if your smile mocks me.”
“My lord, I mean no disrespect. I was mearly smiling at your shock.”
“I was not shocked, just mearly surprised at finding the girl.”
“Elise. And I am shocked too.” then taking a cautious glance at Count Makraim she plunged on. “Beautiful voice isn't it?”
Not fully hearing Matsey, the count replied “Yes, she is”
Matsey decided it best to leave the statement alone. Instead she remained quiet and smiled to herself. Her master had been captivated by Elise when he first met her. Matsey had to admit there was something about the girl. She seemed to make everyone around her feel at ease. Elise was easy to talk to and her smile could bring the world down to her feet. Suddenly Matsey frowned. Count Makraim saw her frown and asked what was wrong. Matsey looked him straight in the eye and said “It makes my heart ache to think of Elise with that horrible Sir Garot. We have to help her.”
Makraim thought for a moment and replied slowly “I will do anything to keep her out of his reach.”
The tavern manager came over to Makraim and Matsey's table to show them to their room. When they got there, Makraim asked Matsey to find Elise and stay with her to prevent her running again. Elise was easy to find. She was surrounded by men of all ages and sizes. The sight made Matsey laugh. She approached Elise slowly and timidly. Painfully aware of all the attention she was about to get in addressing Elise, she called out “My lady! Please I bed your audience.”
Elise turned at the odd address and smiled warmly at her friend. “Matsey!” She squealed out “You are here.” Then she stopped suddenly and looked around worriedly
“Don't fret. He is no angry with you. Let's retire to your room where we can speak in peace.”
Elise agreed with Matsey and left with her, despite the loud protests around her.
Once in her room she turned to Matsey. “I'm sorry for leaving in a rush. I really don't know what came over me. I felt I had to leave quickly!”
“Well,” uncertain if she should say what had happened “Sir Garot came for you. he threatened a lot. But don't worry you are under the count's protection.”
“I've caused so much trouble! What should I do to repay his kindness?”
“Nothing my lady. Just don't run again!”
Satisfied with their talk the two women went to sleep.
In a room down the hall sleep was not finding Count Makraim. Now alone and not traveling he began to think about Sir Garot. He would be coming to his manor tomorrow to claim Elise. No one would be there though. Then his thoughts turned to who would have tipped him off. His head began to ached with the thoughts swirling around his head. Finally exhaustion taking over, he fell into a listless sleep.
