Count Makraim woke to the sun shining into his room. He cursed himself for sleeping so late. Then he sat straight up. Something was wrong. There seemed to be some sort of commotion outside his door. He could hear two female voices sounding terrified and male voices etched with concern and fear at the same time. Then he caught some of the words in passing and crept to his door to look out to see quite a sight. Matsey was standing just outside his door looking wildly at someone opposite her. Opposite her was a man who Makraim noticed as the stableboy from last night. In between them both with his back turned to him was Elise. All around them were people trying to calm everyone down.
“She's being hunted! You cannot stay here! I will turn her over myself.” Cried Diere.
“No! We will leave here as soon as Count Makraim wakes!” screamed back Matsey.
“Please!” begged Elise “Please listen!”
Everyone turned to her. The sound of her voice seemed to command attention. “Do not throw words you do not mean around.” She turned to Diere. “Diere, do not fear anything. I will be out before anyone gets here. I am sorry to have aroused you. I was only trying to get you to make haste with our horses.” She then turned to the man in front of her and bowed. “Forgive the trouble I have brought Delfax. We must leave at once. There is a man coming for me. I feel his presence. I do not know why this is but I know when he is after me. I suggest you tell him I was never here.” Suddenly she turned to face Count Makraim. “Let's go now. He is nearing.” Makraim started at her sudden attention on him. I twas as if she knew he was there all along. He looked at Matsey and saw she too was shocked.
“Very well my lady.” was his reply and they walked through the gathered crowd to get out and get the horses.
When they were traveling again Count Makraim turned to Elise and Matsey who were currently behind him. “Would one of you two tell me what the hell happened back there?”
Matsey looked at Elise and realized she wasn't going to answer so she looked back to Makraim and said, “Well I don't rightly know myself. I woke to see Elise in a terrible state. She seemed frantic and I tried to calm her. She was speaking in a weird tongue a. I began to fear fro her so I got up and grabbed her to bring her out for her state. She shook violently and said we had to get the horses and get out now. I thought she had gone insane but we went to the stableboy Diere and asked him to make haste we needed to leave now. Then Elise calmed and aid someone was coming for her to lay claim. All of a sudden Diere ran us inside and began yelling. The only quiet one was Elise. She said nothing until her apology. And then she turned to you and....” Here Matsey stopped and looked to Elise “How did you know he was there?”
Elise looked like she was struggling with something. She was battling with her insides when finally she sighed, “I will tell you in Rumox.”
“But he will hunt you there.” the girl started at the sound of his voice. He stopped his horse and looked at the two girls who stopped next to him. “He will not tire till her gets you. Why is this? Why a blacksmith's daughter?”
Elise looked straight into his green eyes as if searching for something. She didn't find it so she turned away and looking at the ground she replied, “I will be safe with my aunt. She is my only hope!”
Count Makraim was glad she turned away. He could no longer look into her eyes of midnight. They still pulled his soul as if trying to drag something hidden in its depths.. It wouldn't do any good for her to know his secrets. He didn't know all of them himself. He could not understand her statement but off to Rumox they went.
