Sir Garot came into town later that night. He approached the tavern and grabbed the stable boy by the throat. “Did a girl pass through here? One more beautiful than a spring day itself?”
“Sir!” chocked out Diere.
Sir Garot dropped the boy “Speak!”
“Many have passed through here sir. I believe many of the women beauties.”
“This one was withe a Count Makraim and a servant girl.”
Diere was bad at lying and holding anything in but he wouldn't have to lie. THe girl did not come with the Count, only left with him. “Count Makraim came into town last night and he and a servant girl stayed at this tavern. But no one else was with him. Sorry sir.”
Sir Garot studied the boy and decided he wasn't lying “Fine! We shall stay here the night to scout information out. Take our horses boy!” Sir Garot and his men decided to spend some time in this village. It was quant and the women beautiful. Sir Garot decided they would spend the week. One more week of freedom for his prey he though.
Meanwhile, Elise, Count Makraim, and Matsey were in a neighboring town to Rumox. They would rest for the night and Elise could send a letter by messenger to her aunt to announce their coming. They stopped at a lodge Elise seemed to know. It was odd how she acted though. They stepped inside. It was beautiful. Count Makraim looked over at Matsey with a questioning look but saw her preoccupied with her surroundings. There were beautiful painted windows all around them. There were hanging crystals from the ceiling that glowed with light. The floor was smooth like glass but no where near fragile. To their right, stood a large desk made of oak with a large burley man behind it. Else ran to this man and talked to him hurriedly and quietly. She came back to Count makraim and Matsey with a satisfied smile. The man was walking behind her. She stopped in front of the count and Matsey. “This man is Redoc. He was a friend to my father. He will let us stay tonight. Come let's hurry!:
Makraim and Matsey looked questionably at her but followed anyway. Once in the room Makraim rounded on Elise.
“My lady. I think you have more to tell us than you are leading on.”
Elise looked at him and then to Matsey “All will be told in Rumox if it puts your mind to ease.”
Matsey took this time to start a conversation with Elise about this town. Count Makraim soon joined the conversation out of shear curiosity.
“This town was where my mother was born. She was the most beautiful vision. She had sky blue eyes and hair as light as snow. Her skin was tanned and her grace was unmatched. Her parents were the richest people of this town. When she was fourteen, her parents were murdered. Redoc was to marry her off. He took pity on her and found my father in Rumox. He was already a well known blacksmith at the age of nineteen. He agreed to marry my mother. There were conditions. They would need to leave Rumox and this town and head as far away as they could. They settled in Kiegan and there I was born. My mother died when I was fourteen and it was just me and my father. For three years we lived and then you know the rest.”
“Your story is missing pieces Elise.” Count Makraim's voice brought her back to herself.
“Yes there is. Many holes are in there, much like your stories my lord. For you ask about myself but tell no one of you. Your story to Matsey has many holes in it.”
Matsey blushed and looked at the ground. She remained silent though hoping for a story to be told. When nothing happened she looked up to see Makraim and Elise staring intently at each other.
Elise broke the silence first “I see. My count I feel sorry for the poor wench who did this to you.”
To Matsey this statement seemed way too out of place. She turned to the Count and his reaction puzzled her even more. He stood there open mouthed and rigidly rooted to the spot. The blood seemed to drain from his face and he looked almost frightened.
“Why don't you ease your heart tonight. You are in safe company.” Elise said as she turned and sat herself next to Matsey.
“How?” was all he choked out “How could you know?”
“I didn't , but your reaction says I'm right
“Yes, but, you always seem to know! Always!” He dropped his confused look and strode over to an arm chair to the far side of the room behind the two girls. He sighed and mentally prepared himself for a long night.
