Chapter 2: Thanks, Madam Fortune Teller!
It is a hot afternoon; Clarisse and Diane are sweating like pigs while they are on their way home. They saw the new ice cream parlor near the park and jealously stared at the customers inside, looking very refreshed because they're eating different flavors of ice cream with cherries and chocolate syrup at the top.
“Oh my gosh! Come on Diane let's check out the new ice cream parlor… I heard that they really offer creamy and yummy flavors of ice cream.” Clarisse said, hanging out her tongue that made her look like a dog.
“That's if you have enough money left in your purse. It's true that they do have delicious ice creams but they also sell it for a pretty high price.” Diane raised her eyebrows and teasingly said, “And as I can recall, you spent all your money earlier to buy the cake that the Cooking class baked because your crush is also on that group. That is, if I'm not mistaken.”
Clarisse just sighed and sat under the giant tree at the park to hide from the torturing heat of the sun. Diane's right. She really spent her money in buying many cakes earlier because she wanted to impress her crush but all she got was a tiny smile in return. Clarisse swallowed, trying to feel how dry her throat is. Diane noticed it and took pity on her so she grabbed her hand and dragged her at the center of the park where an old man sells Popsicles for a reasonable price.
“I didn't know that you have a concerned heart for the thirsty.” Clarisse teased Diane while licking her orange flavored Popsicle.
Diane just rolled her eyes and said, “Yeah, right.”
They continued walking home; still licking their popsicles that looked like it's rapidly melting. When they are already near Clarisse's house, she bumped in to a boy because she's very busy with her Popsicle.
“Ouch!” Clarisse shrieked, rubbing her back because she fell on the floor flatly.
“Oh, I'm sorry. Let me help you.” The boy handed his right hand to Clarisse to help her stand up. Clarisse slowly took it, feeling the warmth coming from his hand. She stared at his neatly brushed hair and beautiful metallic blue eyes. He also has thin, pinkish lips. After a second, Diane hit Clarisse's hand who has regained her senses and hurriedly let go of the boy's hand.
“I'm very sorry. I believe that you're also studying at my school. I've noticed you several times at the cafeteria. I'm Xander. And you are?” He requested for their names.
“Clarisse.”
“Diane.”
“Nice to meet the two of you. I'm really sorry Ms. Clarisse. Well I have to go now. I have some errands to run.” Xander turned and was about to leave until he noticed Diane's face. He pulled out his handkerchief and wiped the Popsicle residues near her lips. “You have very pretty lips, Ms. Diane.” He said, and then left. Diane blushed hardly because of what Xander did. Clarisse stared at her with disgust, feeling very jealous.
“I hate to say this but I think he likes you.” Clarisse said with bitterness on her face.
“How come? I mean, How did you know?” Diane asked, still absorbed by what just happened.
Clarisse frowned and said, “It's just the way he looked at you. Enough of this crap. Let's get going. I still have to do my assignments.”
Diane just nodded and the two of them bid each other goodbye as they parted their ways. When Clarisse was already alone, the wind strongly blew and a flying paper covered Clarisse's face.
“What the-” She heatedly said, removing it from her face and stared at it from a moment. After a minute, an idea popped in to her head and she dashed her way to that place that she had read in the advertisement. She ended up in a small purple tent with shining gold stars. She entered and sat across the Fortune Teller.
“What is it my dear that you want to ask?” The fortune teller said, who's not that ugly but she looked terrifying because of the candles, magical cards and a big crystal ball around her.
Clarisse concentrated and think about what she really wanted to ask.
“How can I get a boyfriend?”
“I see…” The woman said, closing her eyes and circling her hands around her crystal ball.
“You need to be known, darling. You need exposure to the crowd for them to notice you.” She slowly whispered.
Clarisse froze for a moment, stood up and left her payment on top of the table. “Thanks.” She said, then quickly stepped out of the tent.
“Good luck, my dear. Better not gamble on love.” The fortune teller murmured to herself when Clarisse already left.
Clarisse was in deep thought that night. “How can I get exposure and be known by several people?” She asked herself while recalling what the fortune teller told her.
The next day, Clarisse and Diane saw that the bulletin board of their school is surrounded with several students because the administration posted a very interesting announcement.
“What could it be?” Clarisse asked Diane.
“Maybe it's the result of the raffle draw for the lucky person who will appear on the next commercial idol.” Diane replied, doing her best to go near the announcement.
“I've never known that there's a promo like that in this school.” Clarisse innocently remarked.
“Excuse me please.”
“Coming through.” The two of them tried to go near the board to catch a glimpse of that announcement. It says:
We have chosen (through electronic raffle) the winner of the promo, for the next commercial idol. And the lucky winner is,
Ms. Clarisse of class 1-A
Clarisse can't believe what she just saw. “I-s… t-hat… m-e?” She managed to asked, even though she feels like she's gone faint.
Diane smiled widely and said, “Are you stupid? Can't you read?”
“Oh my gosh! It's really me! I can't believe it!” Clarisse screamed and jumped with joy. Most of the people around her are jealous but others are not. They just stood there and stared at Clarisse while she zoomed around like a weirdo.
“This is it Diane. This is what the fortune teller's talking about.” She said with teary eyes because of happiness.
“What fortune teller?” Diane asked, clueless of what her best friend is saying.
“On my way home yesterday, I went to a fortune teller and asked her how I can grab a boyfriend. And she said that I need to be known by many people for them to notice me!” She joyfully said, making Diane feel nervous about this.
“So you're planning to use this opportunity just to get a boyfriend? Isn't it against the principles of true love? If you're going to do this, it's just like you're not honest to your true feelings. And eventually, when you happen to get a boyfriend, you'll end up splitting with him.” Diane explained, hoping that Clarisse will listen to her even just a bit. Clarisse sighed so Diane thought that she understood but she's wrong.
“Listen, Diane. This is my chance. All of my life, I felt like I'm being left out. Now, I won't have to feel that way because I'll be in a relationship just like everybody is.”
“And you're saying that I can't do anything to stop you?”
“Absolutely.”
“Have it your way then.” Diane said, sounding a bit afraid for her most special friend. She only wants to help her. That's all. But she really won't listen.
Clarisse raised her head and spread her arms then said, “Good bye to shame, and hello to fame!”
