I bolted awake as I heard the horn honk out in the driveway. I jumped out of bed, threw my clothes on as fast as I could. I ran out of my room, grabbing my backpack on the way out the door. I ran down the stairs, taking two at a time. My little brother was sitting at the kitchen table as I ran to the cupboard.
“Running late again Jaclyn?” Pip asked between bites of his alphabits. I ignored him as I did every morning. Eleven year brothers can be such a pain. I shoved my pop-tarts in my back pack and ran to the door. I was intercepted by my mother, who gave me a kiss and my lunch money.
“Don’t forget Jaclyn, you have your art class tonight. Here is some money for your lunch today, and extra dinner later, since you won’t be home in time to eat here.” I gave my mom a kiss on the cheek.
“Thanks mom, I’ll be back tonight, have a good day.” she smiled at me and I rammed my socked feet into my shoes. Mom frowned at that, she always hated it when I didn’t untie my shoes when I took them off, and hated it even more when I didn’t untie them to put them on, but what was the point when I was just going to put them on and re-tie them?
I ran out the door and saw my best friend Cara sitting in her car, waiting for me to get in. I ran down the driveway and to her car, opened the door and sat down. The music blasted from Cara’s speakers, and I covered my ears and waited for her to turn the music down.
Cara pulled out of the drive and headed towards school. When the song was finally over, she turned the dial and glanced over at me. I removed my hands from my ears and smiled. Cara pushed her long brown hair out of her eyes and placed it behind her ear.
Cara had been my best friend since I was four, she was always there. She had lived next door to me until three years ago, when my mother had gotten a promotion and began making more money. My father felt like he had to compete and be the ‘bread winner’ so he became a workaholic. I hated it. Soon mom and dad moved Pip and I to a new house. Cara and I still went to the same school, and when she got her driver’s licence and a car for her 16th birthday, she began giving me rides to school.
I looked out at the school as Cara pulled into a parking space. ‘Survive one more day and you can go to your art class’ I thought to myself as I stepped out of the car. I had always hated school, but I did my work and pretended to like it. My teachers liked me, my parents were proud, and let me take my art class in the evenings. It worked for everyone. I would have liked to take an art class at the school, but I was too busy with all the honors classes I took to fit one in.
As soon as I got to my locker, many students started asking me with questions. I was also the student body president, and as such, I was responsible for many decisions around the school. I sighed and followed a hyper red head to the gym to help decide on a few decorations for the upcoming dance. I sighed and randomly picked colors and themes, as everyone nodded their heads in approval. I hated this kind of treatment, I was no better than any of the rest of them, why should the look up to me so?
When school finally ended, I walked downtown towards the art studio. I stopped at a small coffee shop and ordered a small glass of ice water and a muffin. I wasn’t really hungry, but I liked to sit and watch people without being known. It was a nice change from the constant group of fans following me around at school.
I sat watching people for quite a while, then I stood up and left the small shop. I was supprized that the sun had already set. I walked quickly to the art studio down the street and went in. I climbed the steps and went into the classroom. I went towards my usual seat, but was supprized to see someone sitting in it.
"Great, more to add to my anoyence." I mumbled as I obsurved the person taking up my seat.
He was wearing a black pair of jeans and a black turtle neck sweater, his auburn hair combed and neat. I was going to tell him to find another seat, when he turned and looked me in the eyes. I gasped and swallowed hard. His bright misty eyes seemed to look straight through me, to see all my hidden thoughts. I watched as he turned his silver eyes back to what he was drawing. I moved away and sat towards the back of the class.
I continued to watch the guy sitting in my seat most of the night. It was my seat, and I was very used to sitting there, in my spot, the one place in the world I could go and get all my anger and stress out and he was sitting there. How dare he show up and interupt and disrupt my life, through it all out of order, introduce disorder and cayos. I sighed at myself, if I had been on time, then my spot may not have been taken, so in all, it was my fult. I finally went to work and became totaly inthraled in my artpeice.
Towards the end of class I felt a hand on my shoulder. I jumped and I heard a gentle chuckle. I looked up and once again was captured in those silver orbs. I seemed to float away, and none of my problems seemed to matter anymore. He looked at my drawing, and I was back on earth, firmly sitting in my seat once more.
“That’s very good.” he said, looking at my sketch. I blushed and looked away. Once again his eyes were focused on me, even though I couldn’t see him, I could feel his eyes on me. “My name is Perrin.” I smiled and looked up into his eyes.
“My name is Jaclyn. Nice to meet you Perrin.” I held out my hand and for a moment he looked as if he would laugh, but he took my hand and shook it gently. Shivers ran up my arm and down my spine. I pulled my had away and looked at Perrin questioningly. Perrin seemed confused and blushed slightly.
“Do... Do you need a ride home Jaclyn?” everything I had ever been taught told me to say no, but yes was the answer I heard exit my mouth. Perrin seemed as shocked at his own question as I was at my answer and we both looked at eachother for a long moment, before he went back to his seat.
At the end of class I walked with Perrin out of the building. The street was very dark and no one was around. Perrin led me towards a dark ally. Just as I was about to pull away, he pulled out his keys and clicked the button. The lights of a car flashed and unlocked. He led me to the car and I got in.
