Chapter 6:

Faith and Fate

 

 

 

`Three days.'

 

Spring was in full bloom. Warm weather, blue skies, fragrant flowers flourishing in the warm, damp earth as their sweet scent permeated the air. Unfortunately, the perfection of the morning was completely lost to the melancholy girl who sat slumped in a porch swing, lost in her own anxious thoughts.

 

`It's been three days since I've seen Cole. I know he said he'd give me space to think, but…' Bella frowned.

 

`I miss him.'

 

Wrinkling her nose in frustration, Bella sighed and dangled her foot over the side of the swing. She was exhausted. Sleep had been an ever elusive thing these last several days and Bella was sure that her head was about to explode with all the contemplating and arguing she had done with herself.

 

She had gone over every single angle of the situation, but she was still at a lost as to what she was going to do with the admission of love Cole had dropped onto her shoulders.

 

Picking at a loose thread on the cushion beneath her, Bella smiled wanly. `I keep wishing that Cole would call me up and tell me that this whole thing is all a big prank. He and Derrick staged the whole affair and the joke is on me.'

 

`Is that really what you want? Or are you just desperately trying to run away again?'

 

Folding her arms around her waist, Bella chewed on her bottom lip. `That's the problem. I don't know what I want.'

 

`It's no use trying to lie to yourself, ya know.'

 

Scowling, Bella plucked furiously at the defenseless string and narrowed her eyes. `Then why don't you tell me what I want?'

 

`You know already,' the voice replied calmly.

 

Bella surveyed the beauty surrounding her with troubled eyes. Being unable to decide on a course of action was driving her crazy. Stupid, arrogant voices in her head were driving her crazy. This whole damned dilemma was driving her CRAZY!

 

“Augh! I can't take this!” Bella exclaimed as she flopped back into the swing.

 

`If I make the wrong decision, it could ruin us. How do I know if I'm doing the right thing?'

 

`You really will drive yourself crazy with that kind of thinking,' the voice chastised gently, `There's no way to know if you're making the right choice in this kind of situation. The only thing you can do is follow your heart and hope it guides you in the right direction.'

 

`Has Cole ever let you down in the past?'

 

`No, but-`

 

`Then have a little faith. In him and in yourself. Love will lead you down the right path.'

 

Smiling, Bella sat up and stretched.

 

She'd made her decision.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cole glowered at the charred, barely recognizable item in front of him and exhaled heavily.

 

“Son of a bitch! That's the fourth one!” Cole growled as chucked the ruined pizza into the trash. Collapsing into the nearest chair, Cole rested his head onto his folded arms and lightly thumped the table top with his fist in frustration.

 

`Well maybe if you could focus on something else other than Bella, you'd be able to remember things such as our lunch burning away in the oven.'

 

`Shuddup.'

 

Picking his head up and resting it in his palm, Cole sighed. Three days had passed and not a word from Bella. How could he possibly think of anything else when his whole world seemed to be slowly slipping away from him?

 

`Did I do the right thing? Or am I being selfish forcing her to make a decision based on something I want?' Cole grimaced and leaned back in his chair.

 

`Do you really think you could've lived day after day alongside her not knowing if there was even the slightest possibility of a relationship beyond just friendship?'

 

Cole rubbed a hand over his broad chest and shook his head. `No. I would've gone completely insane.'

 

`Exactly. Now quit fretting like a little girl and make some food. I'm hungry.'

 

“I'm losing my mind,” Cole muttered as he pulled another pizza out of the freezer and tossed it into the oven.

 

“Uh-oh, better go find it,” a voice teased softly behind him. Cole spun around and rested his disbelieving eyes on the object of his troubled thoughts.

 

Wincing at the bad joke, Bella moved towards Cole and met his intense emerald gaze with her own cerulean one.

 

“What are you doing here?” Cole asked, still not quite sure if he was just imagining her standing in front of him.

 

“Did you not want me to come? I can leave…” Bella turned to go but smiled when Cole grabbed her hand and spun her around to face him. Feeling tingles race up her arm at his touch; Bella shivered and closed her eyes.

 

`So this is what it's supposed to feel like,' Bella mused to herself in wonder. Derrick's kisses had never had this effect on her.

 

Taking in the expression of awe on her face, Cole grinned smugly and murmured, “Have you made your decision, Bella?”

 

Silently, Bella shifted closer and pressed her body flush with his. Electricity crackled in the air as Bella tilted her head and brushed her lips over his.

 

Cole's back stiffened and his breath caught in his throat at the unexpected contact. Completely shocked, it took him a minute to respond but when he did Bella felt her knees weaken as he pulled her even closer and covered her mouth completely with his.

 

Desire rocketed through her very veins and Bella gasped as his tongue gently traced her lips to then dart inside and taste her. Forgetting everything but the man embracing her, Bella sighed into his mouth and lost herself in his kiss.

 

Fisting her hands in his shirt, she wondered at the hard muscle she felt rippling beneath it. His entire body shuddering under her touch, Cole groaned and thought dazedly, `At last, the moment I've been fantasizing about. These hands that I've only felt in dreams…'

 

The lines between friendship and something headier and more visceral faded as the two lost themselves in a wash of passion and a yearning for more. Breaking the kiss, Cole stared down into the dazed eyes of the girl he loved and brushed the pad of his thumb over her swollen lips.

 

Burning the vision of her flushed, passion filled visage forever into his memory, Cole smiled faintly.

 

“I'll take that as a yes… or do you do that to everyone when they ask you a simple question?” Cole teased as Bella grinned and shoved playfully at his chest.

 

“Wouldn't you like to know?” Bella squealed as Cole easily picked her up and threw her over his shoulder.

 

“Well then, I'll just have to find out now won't I?” Bella shrieked and pounded on Cole's back.

 

“Put me down! What the hell are you? A caveman?” Cole chuckled and dropped Bella unceremoniously onto his bed. Grinning widely, he pounced, smothering any further protests with his mouth.

 

 

 

 

 

~Several Hours Later~

 

 

 

 

 

Sighing and stretching contentedly, Bella snuggled deeper into Cole's arms and cushioned her head on his shirt covered chest.

 

Shifting to make her more comfortable, Cole smiled and ran his fingers through her long, silky tresses. “Whatcha thinking about?”

 

Bella tilted her head and gazed up at him through her eyelashes. “Do you think it was fate that led us to each other, Cole? Do you believe in that?”

 

Cole gently tweaked her nose. “I don't know. Don't really care, honestly. As long as I'm with you, I don't care what brought us together. You're the only thing constant in my life and I'll never give you up.”

 

Satisfied with his answer, Bella snuggled back into his arms and allowed her eyes to drift closed. Just as she was about to fall into sleep, a pungent, burning odor invaded her nose.

 

Bella raised her head and poked Cole. “What's that burning smell? Do you have something in the oven?”

 

Cole's eyes flew open and he crawled over Bella, loudly cursing his own stupidity.

 

“SON OF A BITCH! I did it again!”

 

Bella giggled as she watched her boyfriend rush from the room. Flopping back onto the bed she smiled.

 

“Boyfriend,” Bella said the word aloud and grinned, “That's gonna take some getting used to.”

 

`So this is what it feels like to be in love.'

 

`I can't wait to see what happens next…'

I know it kinda seems like Bella and Cole are schizo in this chapter, but you can't tell me you haven't ever argued with yourself before! lol I know I do! Often loudly and in public. :o) I'm going to try and update every day, ok? My lack of life really helps in the continuous writing process.
