Falling For You
Chapter 14
Walking a Dangerous Line
Slapping the snooze button on the alarm clock beside her bed, Breanna moaned and flopped back onto her pillows.
“Augh… Too early… Need rest…”
“Breanna! You better get up sleepy head, breakfast is almost ready!”
Groaning in protest, she forced her sore, weary body into a sitting position and scrubbed at her face in an attempt to wake herself up. It wasn't working. “Alright, Mom! I'll be down in a couple of minutes!” she called, her voice hoarse and strained. And no wonder, considering how Devon had worked her over before dropping her off at her house early that morning. Her skin was still humming and the memories of their weekend together made her body shudder pleasantly.
But now the weekend was over, and Breanna knew that she and Devon had to be very cautious of the way they acted around each other. It wouldn't do for her friends to suspect anything other than a platonic relationship between them, nor would it do for Brent to notice any abnormal familiarity. In a matter of mere days her simple, boring life had been replaced with something disturbingly similar to a soap opera.
`Well, you did wish for excitement….'
Breanna allowed herself a small smile. `Yeah, I did, didn't I?'
`You're not regretting your decision, are you?'
Swinging her legs over the side of the bed and shuffling her way in the direction of the bathroom, Breanna frowned thoughtfully. `Well, not so much regretting it as much as wishing I had met Devon under different circumstances, ya know?
`Somehow I don't think it would've mattered either way, Bre. Devon obviously doesn't care that you have a boyfriend, and I doubt that his intentions would be different even if you didn't.'
Pausing just outside the bathroom, Breanna sighed and slumped against the door frame. `The scary thing is, I know all that, and despite it, I still want to be with him. He makes me feel….'
`Makes you feel… makes you feel what, Breanna?'
Smiling slightly, Breanna pushed her tangled hair from her eyes and proceeded into the bathroom. `That's it. He just makes me feel. For the longest time it seemed as if I was only going through the motions of life, almost like I was watching from the sidelines while everyone else was playing the game. No one, not my family or my friends, or even Brent makes me feel the way I do when I'm with Devon. With him, I'm free.'
`Are you sure you're not mistaking freedom for the thrill of doing something you know is wrong?'
Slipping her PJ top over her head, Breanna caught her reflection in the mirror and stopped for a moment to observe the girl staring back at her. No longer was she dissatisfied with what she saw there, though she wasn't completely sure why. Maybe it was because Devon had showed her a side of herself that she'd almost forgotten about. He challenged her, something Brent never did. She loved him, but she wished that he would argue with her occasionally. Share his opinions, damn it. Yell at her. He was just so damn agreeable all the time, that she sometimes felt like he wasn't really listening to her.
Devon on the other hand, never seemed to care if he hurt her feelings or not. He was honest almost to the point of being brutal. It was so refreshing to have someone to talk to who she knew wouldn't walk around on eggshells in fear or angering or upsetting her. All her life people had pretty much thrown themselves at her feet for some reason or the other. Whether it was a guy because of her looks, or her friends because of her social status, Breanna had never met a person who made her feel more real than Devon Pierce.
`Am I sure? No. If you hadn't noticed, this whole situation doesn't really make much sense. I can't decipher much of anything concerning my feelings for Devon other than the simple fact that he makes me feel good. In more ways than one….'
`Don't you feel bad at all for lying to everyone? Your parents, your friends, Brent…?'
Stepping under the warm spray of the shower, Breanna closed her eyes and let the water wash away the evidence of her torrid weekend. `Of course. So much, in fact, that I don't know how I'm going to face them, especially Brent. I'm afraid that they'll all take one look at me and know what I did.'
`Yet you still can't resist sneaking around with Devon behind their backs, huh?'
Lathering up a shower sponge, Breanna shook her head and exhaled heavily. `No, and that's the one thing I regret more than anything. The one thing about myself that I wish Devon had never revealed. It's like he's teaching me to be honest, but at the same time, schooling me in the ways of deceiving the people around me.'
`You could just break up with Brent. That would solve at least one of your problems.'
She flinched at the thought. `This sounds extremely selfish, I know, but can't I just have them both? I mean I don't plan on being with Devon forever, only `till the end of the school year. After that, I'm off to college and Il doubt I'll ever even see him again. And Brent, despite his faults, I still love him. I don't want to leave him.'
`If you love him so much, then why are you cheating on him?'
`I… don't know.'
`You can't have it all, ya know. You need to choose.'
Twisting the faucet off, Breanna snagged a towel and sat on the edge of the tub. Choose? What choice? Brent was obviously the one she should be with. Sweet, honest, loving… what more could she ask for?
`Excitement, danger, passion….'
“All things that seem to seep from Devon Pierce's very pores,” she muttered as she wrapped the towel around her damp body and made her way back into the bedroom. “How am I supposed to resist someone like him?”
`Strength of character, a sense of common decency, morals….'
“Oh, shut up.”
Falling face first onto her bed, Breanna grunted in frustration. `I know I have to choose. I just don't want to….'
`Don't want to or don't know how to?'
Deciding to ignore that, Breanna pushed herself up and searched around for the pile of clothing she'd left lying on the floor from when Devon had dropped her off. Gathering the dirty items together, Breanna smiled when she noticed a black piece of fabric poking out from among her shorts and bathing suit top. Plucking it out, she rubbed the material between her fingers and smiled softly.
Unsure as to why, Breanna had kept the bandana that Devon wrapped around her knee that night at the playground. She supposed it was because she couldn't bear to part with something that reminded her of how sweet, how tender he could be when he wanted to. It was when he did things like that she knew he wasn't as much of a bastard as he pretended to be.
After tucking the material away in a drawer along with everything else she considered precious and disposing of her laundry into a basket she kept outside her door, Breanna dropped her towel and grabbed a bottle of body lotion. It was the same routine she completed every morning, but for some reason today, it felt different. She felt different. Now, whether the change was for the better or the worse, Breanna wasn't sure, and for the time being she decided that she didn't care.
`I can't choose. At least not at the moment. For now… Devon's just going to be a secret. My dirty, little secret….'
oOoOoOoOoOo
`So far so good…' she thought to herself with a sigh of relief as she glanced around the crowded hallway. `Maybe I can get to first period without anyone seeing….”
“Breanna! Hey! Where the hell were you this weekend? I called your cell like fifty million times!”
`Shit.'
Pasting a look of a surprise on her face for Cassandra's benefit, Breanna made a helpless gesture. “Gee, Cass, I don't know what happened. I spent the weekend at home catching up on my homework and stuff. I had my cell phone with me, maybe I didn't pay the bill or something, because I never heard it ring.”
Cassandra shrugged. “Don't worry about it. Anyway, I think I might break up with Justin.”
Genuinely surprised, Breanna replied, “What? Why? Because of the fight you guys had at the party?”
“That and the fact that he didn't call me once to apologize, the inconsiderate prick. I can't believe him.”
Breanna winced and gave her friend a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. “I'm sorry, Cassie. I know you really liked him. Maybe you could try talking to him before you decide to go with something so drastic?”
Cassandra waved off her suggestion like she was crazy. “Pfft. No way. His ass is history.”
“So you are going to break up with him then?”
“Uh, duh. Isn't that what I just said?”
Restraining the urge strangle her friend, something that she found was getting to be more difficult every time she saw her, Breanna just nodded and smiled. Just as she was about to ask if Cassandra had seen Brent, warm arms encircled her waist and brought her back against a broad, muscular chest.
“Mmmm… Hey, hot stuff. Where were you this weekend? I tried calling you a couple of times, but I kept getting your voice mail.”
Leaning her head back onto his shoulder, Breanna attempted to keep her face neutral as she answered his question. He knew she hated pet names. “I—“
“She was holed up in her house all weekend with a bunch of boring old text books to keep her company, that's where she was. It's good to know I wasn't the only one being ignored,” Cassandra grumbled as Brent gave her an odd look.
“A little bitchy today, are we Cassie?” Brent asked.
Cassandra rolled her eyes. “Shut up, what do you care?”
“I never said I did or didn't care, I was just asking a question.”
“Touché.”
“Ok, you know what, I'm—“
“Uh, guys,” Breanna interrupted as her pair of bickering friends turned to look at her sheepishly. “What's up with you two this morning? You never argue like this.”
“Nothing.” Brent and Cassandra replied quickly as they plastered smiles onto their faces.
“Uh-huh….”
“I gotta go,” Cassie muttered, “I'll talk to you later, Bre.”
Watching as her friend practically ran from where they were standing, Breanna extracted herself from Brent's arms and gave him a curious look. “What in the world was all that about? I've never heard you talk like that to anyone. Did she say something to you in the car on the way home from the party or something?”
Brent shifted uncomfortably and shrugged. “Nothing in particular. I guess I'm just in a bad mood, don't worry about it, ok? I'll apologize to Cassie at lunch and everything will go back to the way it always is.”
`Ha… yeah, right. If you only knew….'
`Shush. I don't need your snide comments right now, ok?'
`Right. Mum is the word….'
Ignoring the snickering in her head, Breanna tugged on Brent's hand and led him away from the crowd of students to a secluded corner near the stairwell. “I'm sorry I didn't call you. I was… busy.”
Brent grinned and brought up his left hand to cup her cheek affectionately. “It's not a big deal, Bre. I know how you get when you study. I just hope had a chance to do something fun this weekend.”
`Oh, you are such a horrible bitch….'
Giving him a weak smile, Breanna averted her eyes and found a very interesting spot on the wall behind his head to focus her attention on. “Nope. It was pretty much an all work, no play weekend for me,” she replied with a forced cheerfulness that almost choked her.
Before he could reply, the bell rang and Breanna breathed a sigh of relief. `God is merciful….' Standing on her tip toes, she pressed a chaste kiss to his lips and gave him a playful shove. “You better get going, mister. You don't want to be late for class.”
“Ok, I'll see you at lunch, Bre. Later!
Almost collapsing against the stairwell, Breanna closed her eyes and contemplated for the millionth time if all this lying and sneaking around was worth it. If Devon was worth it.
“Hey.”
Opening her eyes, Breanna couldn't stop the grin that formed on her lips as the person that had been running through her mind all morning appeared in front of her in all his cocky, amber-eyed glory.
“Hey,” she replied as he returned her smile and nodded his head in the direction of janitor's closet on the other side of the stairs. After glancing around to make sure no students were loitering about, Breanna grabbed his hand and followed him into the closet.
oOoOoOoOoOo
I'll keep you my dirty little secret
(Dirty little secret)
Don't tell anyone or you'll be just another regret
(Just another regret, hope that you can keep it)
My dirty little secret…
(Dirty little secret)
Don't tell anyone or you'll be just another regret
(Just another regret, hope that you can keep it)
My dirty little secret…
oOoOoOoOoOo
As soon as the door was closed, Devon pressed her body back against it and captured her lips in a kiss that wiped away all doubt from her mind as to why she had decided to accept his proposal. Hot and insistent, his mouth drained her of any thoughts of turning away and reminded her why it was she found him so irresistible.
Moaning softly, she wound her arms around his neck and tangled her fingers into the soft hair at the nape of his neck. Stepping back for a moment, Devon chuckled and cupped her breast.
“Miss me?”
“Of course,” she whispered as she ground her hips against his in a way she knew drove him crazy. Groaning, Devon trapped her with his hands on either side of her head and dipped his mouth down close to her ear.
“No second thoughts?”
oOoOoOoOoOo
I'll keep you my dirty little secret
(Dirty little secret)
Don't tell anyone or you'll be just another regret

My dirty little secret

(Just another regret, hope that you can keep it)
My dirty little secret
Dirty little secret…

oOoOoOoOoOo
Shaking her head, Breanna murmured, “Never. Just keep touching me and I swear I'll never look back.”
“Happy to oblige…” he whispered as he nipped her earlobe and untucked her white uniform shirt from the waistband of her skirt. And he was, happy to oblige that is, because as long as he was touching and being touched in return, he didn't have time to think about the uncomfortable way his heart had lurched at the sight of her draped all over her `boyfriend.'
The soft, pleasure filled sounds she made reminded him that he was the only one who made her moan and scream, even if he wasn't allowed to tell anyone. As long as he was the only one, he figured it was ok for her to consider him her dirty, little secret.
oOoOoOoOoOo
Who has to know
The way she feels inside (inside)
Those thoughts I can't deny (deny)
These sleeping dogs won't lie (won't lie)
And all I've tried to hide
It's eating me apart
Trace this line back…
The way she feels inside (inside)
Those thoughts I can't deny (deny)
These sleeping dogs won't lie (won't lie)
And all I've tried to hide
It's eating me apart

“Brent!”
Pausing, Brent turned around and waited for Cassandra to catch up to him. “What, Cassie?”
Resting her hands on her knees as she caught her breath, Cassandra frowned. “Why are you being such a jerk? What the hell is wrong with you?”
Mouth falling open in shock, it took a moment for Brent to reply. “Are you serious? You don't remember what you said to me in the car on the way to your house on Friday?”
Screwing up her face in confusion, Cassie shook her head. “No. What did I say?”
“You insisted that Breanna didn't really love me and then you told me that you would never treat me like that.”
Now it was her turn to gape at him. `Oh my God….'
“I have to go,” she whispered and then turned away quickly in an attempt to put as much distance between them as possible.
Catching her arm before she could flee, Brent pulled her back around to face him. “Why are you running from me, Cassie?”
“Because I'm embarrassed. I never should've said anything, I'm so stupid! Oh, God, Breanna is going to—“
Pressing a finger against her lips, Brent effectively shushed her and earned himself an odd look in the process. “Chill, Cass. I'm not going to tell her about it, ok? It'll be our secret.”
Removing his finger, Brent grinned and gave her cheek a little pat. “I'll talk to you later, alright? I gotta get to class.”
Cassandra watched helplessly as Brent waved and turned away, even though every muscle in her body yearned to reach out and pull him back to her. `A secret, huh? Well, what's one more, right?'
`Someday…someday all will be revealed….'
