Such a beautiful day...
This was the only thought that crossed through the mind of a young neko as she walked merrily down the street, clad in a casual set of jeans and a shirt, her blonde hair set off a bit by the wind. She’d been walking outside all day, the weather allowed, and she was quite enjoying herself. For her, life was simple on the outside, slightly chaotic on the inside at times...but she hid it well. Her stroll down the street took her to a pet shop, where she saw something that would change her life forever. She just didn’t know it yet.
“What in the world??” she said to herself as she looked in the display window. Further back into the store, she could see what didn’t look like a pet at all, but almost like a person...she quickly walked inside to get a closer look, only to find that she was correct. About half way into the store, in a large cage, there sat an inutai, his head hung a little so his long and wild silver hair would cover his eyes, his long, silver tail sat limp next to him, and underneath, he wouldn’t let her see his eyes, which were also silver...kind of a theme for him. He was nearly just a pet, clad only in small shorts, for the sake of decency. He pretended to not to notice her at all.
“Hey...um...” she looked for a name tag or sign, but found none. “Excuse me in there...but...do you really belong here?” He still pretended not to notice her.
Is this...for real? Its like he can’t even hear me, she thought.
She briskly walked to the store manager. “Excuse me sir...but what is...what is he doing in that cage?” she asked, more demanding than asking.
He smirked. “Oh, that guy? No one really knows about him. He got left here from an orphanage one day, they said they couldn’t take care of him, and they didn’t know why. He wouldn’t say anything to anyone...so we assumed he might be a problem child. We just give him food, he eats it and sits there...I don’t think he’s bathed in years, and he acts so...pessimistic.”
She got out her purse and fished out a handful of bills, 30 dollars in total. “Here...its enough, I hope?”
The man looked almost confused at the fact that someone would want an orphan. “Well, fine...if you want him, just go ahead and take him...good luck with it, I think you’re gonna need it.” He took the money and stuffed it in the register and handed her a leash. “He’s already got a collar, just go ahead and take it as a gift.”
“Er...thanks.” She figured the collar was dirty, lucky for her, she had an old one at home. She felt weird doing all of this, but for some reason, she felt influenced to do it. She couldn’t just let a person sit in a cage for their entire life. She quickly walked back to the cage while the greedy manager sorted through his money. When she reached in the cage to let the inutai out, she saw his eyes for the first time.
Who the hell is this girl...he thought to himself, taking a break from his doing nothing. He looked up at her, his silver eyes glistened, like a million emotions packed into one pupil. She felt mystified.
Silver eyes? She thought.
“Well...here.” She put the leash onto his collar and connected it, and let him out. “Come on...I’m going to give you a new home...”
He stepped out and stood up straight, yawning and staring at her, but not saying a word. He walked out of the store ahead of her, knowing just what to do, almost like he’d been planning his moves all along. She followed quickly after, surprised at first, but then a bit annoyed.
“Don’t you think its going to look a bit odd if I walk you all the way home on a leash?” she asked him, now even more annoyed that he was still ignoring her.
Wonder how long I can keep up this charade before she kills me. He still didn’t speak to her, but he pulled off the collar and leash, they felt annoying to him anyway. She just glared a bit and kept walking, figuring that he wasn’t used to talking, so she felt a little sympathy.
“Ok, ok...just please don’t run off on me...” she said. Lucky for her, he obeyed.
What on earth have I gotten myself into...she thought.
