About two hours after Mary had brought home her new “pet”, she was starting to get worried. She’d just brought a person into her house, more specifically a male, probably with no manners or sense of right or wrong, and no clothes, save for a pair of shorts that were way too small. She felt like she was too young to be living on her own to begin with, and now she had someone else in the house who she would have to provide for, almost like a spouse.
More like a child, she thought.
Josh had gone into the living room of her house and sat on the floor, just sitting there staring around at what looked to him like a great place to live. His tail wagged, mostly from excitement, and a little bit from the happiness he felt, someone actually cared about him. “Even if she doesn’t know me, she still cares...” he said to himself. Unfortunately, that blew his cover. In the next room over, she heard his voice, and rushed in, yelling.
“I knew it! So you can talk...why didn’t you say anything to me back at the pet store?? This is serious stuff we’re dealing with! People don’t just live in pet stores!!” She was looking down at him accusingly, and he didn’t have much to say.
“Of course I can talk...its not like I’m stupid...” he replied calmly. His tail slowed, until it had stopped wagging completely.
She sighed and calmed down a bit. “Well...ok then, but what’s going on with you? How on earth did you end up in a pet store?”
He smirked a bit. “Its not important...I wound up there cause I made a few mistakes, ok? Its not something to talk about. I really don’t like to, anyway.”
She figured it might be best just not to ask for now, he looked a bit worried at the moment. She put a finger to her lip, and thought for a moment. I might as well talk to him about something important though. I’m not just going to have him living in my house, and know nothing about him...
He caught the look, and got curious. “What’s on your mind?” he quickly asked her.
Not wanting to say anything stupid, and unsure of what she should say anyway, she smiled softly and paid close attention to him. “Well...since you might be here for a while, tell me about yourself.”
He smiled back and figured out a basic explanation, at the moment, he wasn’t much of a talker. “Well...uh...my name is Josh, I don’t know my parents, I’ve lived in a pet shop for a good deal of my life...I don’t talk much...and I’m really tired and sore.” The way he spoke of the last two lines, he sounded almost sarcastic, and she giggled a bit.
“Maybe you should take a nap then,” she said, still giggling a little.
“Ok.” He apparently hadn’t been sarcastic, he went from sitting up to sprawled across her floor in a flash. He laid there on her floor and snoozed peacefully, not a care in the world.
At least he’s silent in his sleep...hope he’s that easy to take care of.
He slept for the rest of the day, and into the next morning. She was already up and making breakfast for herself when he finally sat up and looked around, he’d almost forgotten what had happened the day before. He stood up and walked into the kitchen, an aroma filled the air, kind of like food, but much better than any he’d ever tasted.
He walked into the kitchen and saw her there cooking, he smiled softly and took a deep breath through his nose. “Wow...what is that smell? Its...its...good!”
She smiled, she was just making some toast and a few eggs, but apparently it was better than anything he’d ever had. “Good morning sleepy. Its just breakfast, nothing too special.”
He looked over to her kitchen table, it was mostly cleaned off, save for a book bag. He was curious yet again.
“Uhm...what is that?” he asked.
She looked back at her bag and laughed, thinking he was joking. “It’s a book bag, silly. I carry school books in it. I have to go in about 15 minutes.”
Despair hit Josh deep in his stomach. “Um...school? What exactly is that? And wherever it is, would you really go dressed like that?”
Mary had forgotten again that she only had her bathrobe on, but was starting to notice that Josh now has his eyes mostly focused on her body. She refrained from slapping him. He might not know any better...
“Well Josh...school is where I go to learn, and no, I’m going to change clothes before I do...but you cheated me. Last night, you never told me about yourself that much...it seemed more like a joke to me.”
He grinned and scratched the back of his head. “Yeah, I guess I kinda snuck my way out of it, I don’t talk about my past much...but there really isn’t that much to know. I was born somewhere, my parents couldn’t afford to keep me, as much as they wanted to, and I ended up at an orphanage. I didn’t ever want to talk to anyone or anything, so I didn’t...I eventually became a lot like a pet, and so the headmaster there sent me to a pet shop, since he was a real dick...”
Mary listened very closely, he was just starting to get into his life at the pet shop when she looked at the time. She still had to change and eat, and she was going to be late. Apparently, even if he didn’t want to, Josh knew how to strike up a conversation.
“Cripes! I’m gonna be late...” She ran upstairs, and in a matter of minutes came back down in a pair of baggy pants and a loose shirt, obviously she didn’t have much time to look. She almost literally inhaled her breakfast, much like a student normally would, and ran for the door. “Josh, do NOT leave the house, I’ll be back with in a few hours...just...keep yourself busy somehow, and if you really need food, there is still some bread left from breakfast...see ya!” She then ran quickly out of the house and for school, where she would spend the entire day worried that she just left a home-wrecker in her house.
Keep myself busy, huh? How exactly do I do that? He thought to himself. He didn’t have much real life experience, and instinct was his first reaction...he quickly picked up on the other aromas of the new, mysterious place in which he’d been held, and would have himself a little adventure looking around.
*************
Josh was laying on the floor in Mary’s room, looking at all there was to see, and picking up on plenty of different aromas, his nose was driving him crazy, and the whole house seemed so exciting, even if it was just a house. He would go from crawling around on the floor to reaching up on shelves, looking at whatever he could see, opening drawers to see what they contained, he really couldn’t see their purpose besides holding clothes, which he’d never used that much anyway. He went back downstairs and grabbed a piece of bread, he was sitting with it in his mouth, tearing it up as Mary walked back in the door from school. He didn’t realize that he’d left her room door open, a sure sign that he had been inside, and she saw it right away. Her expression went from sweet to curiously-sweet in moments.
“Hmm....how was your little adventure, Josh?” Her eyes pierced him, there was no getting out of this one. Though she felt a little worried, she trusted him, smiling softly to calm his fears, but then sitting down in front of him. “Seriously, tell me...what did you do while I was gone?”
He had his work cut out for him...he’d seen a new world in just a day.
