Josh was stirring on the floor as the sunlight started to creep onto his face. The warmth tickled his nose, and he slowly opened his eyes. He hadn’t changed at all from the night before, he was still just laying on the living room floor in a towel, but apparently, Mary had given him a blanket, and left a note next to him. He picked it up, and luckily, had learned how to read at the orphanage. He yawned groggily and glanced at the paper.
“Morning Josh! Or afternoon, maybe. You must’ve been tired, since you didn’t wake up when I pushed you this morning...anyway, I had school again today. Today is Friday though, so tomorrow, we can both sleep in! Great, huh? Well, school awaits. I left you a nicer breakfast today, I hope it isn’t cold by the time you wake up. See you after school!”
Josh was excited. As soon as he finished reading the note, he took in a whiff of the air, and he got hungry fast. He could recognize it right away: Meat. Obviously some kind of breakfast meat, but he didn’t care. All he knew was that she’d made him a good meal for breakfast. He quickly ran into the kitchen and saw what she’d laid out for him. It was three pieces of sausage, and two strips of bacon. She’d obviously made it hot, since she’d been gone for an hour, and it was still steaming a little. He couldn’t keep himself from drooling on the plate, before he reached down and started literally stuffing the food into his mouth. Within in the minute, all of the food was gone, and he was drooling on the plate again, hoping he’d missed something. His tongue hung out the side of his mouth, but he soon realized that he’d inhaled in his food. A little disappointed, but extremely satisfied with the great tasting food and kindness she’d displayed to him, he went upstairs. It was time to go exploring again.
Josh had washed his hands off before doing anymore exploring though, they felt slimy from the greasy food. After about five minutes in the bathroom, he walked across the hall to Mary’s room, where he looked for something that might fit him. He couldn’t live in a towel for his whole life, and hours of rummaging led him back into her dresser. He bypassed all of the useless looking clothes, and came to a pair of sweat pants that were clearly too big for her, they fit him almost perfectly, and considering her build and height, he figured that she got them by mistake or found them. He quickly threw aside the towel and put the pants on, they weren’t too snug so they hung down a little, but they fit ok. He kept looking through and found another pair of sweat pants, but kept on the pair that he found first. The first pair was bluish-gray, which felt ok to him, but the second pair was pink, and for some reason, that felt embarrassing to him. Now at least somewhat clothed, he went back downstairs and sat on the couch, looking for something to do.
Mary got back home just in time to see him doing something that she never expected to see: He could write.
What the...at first he hardly knew about home life, and now he knows how to write? She thought, but tried to keep her confusion at bay, as she smiled at him and put down her school bag.
“I had no idea you knew how to read and write, Josh...” She said to him. He looked up to her and smiled.
“Yeah, well...I never told you that I could. Its about all I did at the orphanage. There wasn’t much else to do except schoolwork, and I hated that...so I just wrote down my thoughts and such. Eventually, one of the instructors at the orphanage saw my talents, and taught me about poetry.” He blushed a bit after he said that. “I’ve been writing it ever since.”
Now Mary was really curious. And after what happened last night, he would probably have quite a bit to write about. “Well...can I see it? I like to read whatever I can get my hands on...”
Josh was hesitant at first. He didn’t want her to see it, he remembered what love felt like, and that was what the poem was all about. “Well...um...yeah...I guess you can see it.” He was blushing much more obviously now, and she could tell. Still, without a moment of hesitation, she took the paper from his hands. She started reading it fast, wanting to finish it before he got the idea of taking it back from her. She read it mostly silent to herself, but as she went on, she started to read it a little bit louder. She blushed just a bit as she did.
“Most of my life, a mystery to me, such a feeling, what could it be? Can you help me, help me find it, help me see it, help me feel it? Now I know it, what it is, my heart’s in a whirl, my mind in a whiz. Can’t see quite straight, or think quite right, don’t know up from down, don’t know day from night. Hold me now, hold me then. Tell you I love you, you’ll know when.”
She stood there and blushed a bit, looking him straight in the eyes. “Is it done? Is it original? Who is it about?” She was full of questions, really desperate to know more while she could.
“I...Uhm...yeah. It is done. I finished it just a few minutes before you walked in the door. Yes its original, I just thought of it a couple hours ago. And its to...” his voice started to fade, his lips were hardly moving.
“Well, tell me? Is it to anyone or not? She moved closer to him, he scooted back to the corner of the couch, trying to avoid the question, but she wouldn’t let him slip out of this. Her eyes were locked at his, there was no way out of it now.
I can’t look away... he thought. His eyes were full of emotions, the silver within them glistened. “Its...for...y...you...”
He’d been so quiet in saying it that even her sensitive ears couldn’t pick up on the sounds. She was almost certain of what he’d said, she thought he said nobody, but she asked again. “Tell me, who is it for?”
He blushed, trying to look away but he couldn’t, this time his voice was a bit more confident. “I wrote it for you.”
For a moment, there was just awkward silence. They sat there, eyes locked together, neither one moving an inch. Slowly though, his tail started to wag back and forth, and his ears stood up a bit.
Josh moved slowly to Mary, who stayed silent, and stood up. She looked up to look to him, and blinked just once. She could hardly think straight.
Josh stood silent for just a moment longer. “Kiss me...” he muttered, almost silently. She stood there, unmoving. He leaned in, and pressed his lips gently against hers.
