Mary was astonished. Here she was, standing her living room, her lips touching those of another, even further, those of a boy who she hardly knew. Everything with the situation seemed so weird, some of it even felt wrong...but she didn’t mind. Her eyes had flown wide open in surprise at first, but as she settled into the moment, they closed slowly and gently. She could feel a weird kind of warmth within her, a sensation she couldn’t begin to describe.
On the other end of the kiss, Josh felt amazing. A sense of pride filled his being. His lips weren’t still, they would gently press and move over Mary’s. He felt a great sensation as well, but it was a very deep feeling. He had accepted that he’d fallen in love with this girl, and being able to kiss her only made him feel better about it. His eyes were peacefully closed, and his arms rested at her waist. He felt like he was in control of the situation, and as far as he could tell, it wasn’t going to end anytime soon.
Mary opened her eyes slowly, hoping that Josh would open his, but he did not. She had gotten caught up in the moment just as much as he had, but now she needed to talk. She needed to speak with him about what was going on. It almost felt like it was all happening too fast. Josh might have accepted love, but Mary only had the feeling. She wasn’t nearly as sure, and now she was extremely nervous. The warmth she felt inside kept her feeling secure, and though she didn’t know him well, she felt safe around Josh, she felt safe with him. Now she just had to get to know more about him.
Josh stood there, still kissing her gently for a good couple of minutes, before he decided he should stop. He didn’t know how she felt about all of this, and the fact that she didn’t stop him was a good sign, but he didn’t know what else to do. He slowly pulled his lips away and opened his eyes, meeting hers, which were already open to greet him. He smiled very softly and peacefully, satisfied with what had happened. A strong blush had fallen across his face, a little bit from embarrassment, but mostly from the feeling that he was holding a girl, that he’d just kissed a girl...the rush was causing his face to burn a little. She smiled in a calm, refreshing manner, it helped him out a bit. He wasn’t ready to admit how nervous he was.
“Uhm...so...?” He tried to start up some conversation, which he was definitely no good at for the time being.
“Hehe...you’re blushing, puppy.” She figured that she could at least be a little playful, especially since he didn’t seem to mind at all.
“I...I am?” He was acting surprised, since he really didn’t know, but he’d figured that he was. He could actually feel the warmth in his face.
She traced the light line of pinkish-red on his face with the tip of her finger, he blushed a bit more from her touch. “Of course you are...I kind of expected it, you got a bit romantic on me for a second...but...I do have to ask...Josh, please be honest and serious, answer as best as you can...do you really love me?”
For a moment, Josh looked away. He truly did love her, and he wouldn’t deny it, but he was still nervous. How would she react? His own personal fears kept on running through his head over and over again, until Mary took his chin into her hand, and made him face her. He blinked in surprise, and finally felt ready to answer, but she spoke again.
“Tell me...do you love me or not?”
He blushed more than he had all night, and slowly, the unsure look on his face returned to a more confident, happy state. He smiled softly to her and finally answered.
“Yes...I do. I love you...of course I love you. You hardly know me, and at first, didn’t know me at all...yet you took me into your house, fed me, provided for me, and cared about me...but...on a deeper level, I could feel something. Like we were on the same level, like I could feel something special from you. And that deep inside, you could feel the same thing from me...”
She wanted to know a bit more now. “So...what are you saying? Do you love me simply as a nice person? Or do you actually love me in the way a boy is supposed to love a girl?”
In the way a boy is supposed to love a girl...that sounds...so right. “Yes,” he said, “I do love you in that way. The way a boy feels when he knows he is in love. I know what you mean by that...and it’s hard to describe...but it is that way. I know that I love you...and I hope that...I am in love with you, Mary...”
She felt so safe and peaceful at the moment. She didn’t even know why. Until now, she’d never felt anything quite like it...and it was getting the best of her. She quickly threw her arms about him, hugging him tightly. Josh looked down at her, and as if by instinct, held her close to him, getting almost a tickled feeling in his stomach from her warmth. His tail started to wag slowly behind him, then quicker as the time went by. They just stood there in each others arms, seconds quickly went to minutes, the minutes became an hour, and before too long, they were in the dark of night. Josh had by this time only gotten more excited with the situation, while Mary, on the other hand, was starting to get a bit tired. Seeing as how she had to wake up early every day that week for school, she was slowly drifting to sleep, right there in his arms. Josh could almost feel just how tired she was. Mary purred softly to him, a sign that she was content, and ready to sleep. Josh nodded to himself and nuzzled her, as he was, he picked her up in his arms and carried her up the stairs. Mary was definitely done for the night, she was about to fall asleep there in his arms, and at the moment, as tired and happy as she was, she couldn’t have cared less.
Josh walked into her room and flipped the light switch on, and laid Mary down on her bed. He pulled the covers over her body and sat down on the floor. For a couple of minutes, he just sat there and watched her. She slept so peacefully, a small, soft smile on her face, her eyes closed just enough. She almost looked motionless, but a light movement of her chest assured him that she was alive and well.
She’s so amazing...and really pretty...its hard to believe that she’s really sleeping, it looks like she had to practice to have such amazing form. And she’s so peaceful...how does she sleep so easy? Must be tired... For a couple more minutes, he sat there and thought about her, watching her as she slept just like an angel.
Until, of course, he started to nudge her. He gently rubbed his cheek against hers, and she slowly cracked one eye open. She was surprised that he hadn’t fallen asleep on the living room floor, like he usually did.
“Josh...nghh...what are you doing awake right now?”
He sat there and smiled at her. “Um...you don’t have that ‘school’ stuff tomorrow, do you?”
“No...why exactly do you ask?”
“Well...cause, I figured maybe we could do something tomorrow...or just hang out, or something...the days are kinda boring when there is nothing to do...”
“Mrrr...ok, fine...we can do something tomorrow.” As soon as she finished that statement, she fell back asleep. Josh smiled and kissed her ear, then stood up and left the room. He went down to the couch in the living room and fell onto it, content, and ready for a long night of sleep.

Mary woke up a little bit later than usual, even for a Saturday. The sunlight shone on her this time, and to her, even the sun was up late. As the rays of sunlight crept along her cheek, she awoke, and looked at the clock on her night stand.
“Wow...11:30...I must’ve been tired...” She stepped out of bed and smiled, she felt really refreshed. “But wow! I feel great...I guess it was worth it to take an extra hour of sleep last night!”
Mary walked quickly down the stairs and into the kitchen, ready to make herself some breakfast. Josh was already there, however, laying out some plates.
“Wait a minute...I thought you didn’t have any family life experience...” She smirked. “So what vocational skill are you hiding from me this time?” She asked, rather sarcastically.
“Well...I never did actually know how to cook, but at the orphanage, we had to set tables for the older kids and for the headmasters...so I got pretty good at it.” He looked a bit more serious for a moment, but then smiled softly. “Of course it doesn’t help that much, since I have no idea how to cook.” He grinned, feeling a bit silly.
She sighed softly and smiled. “Okay, I can deal...since you set the table so well, I’ll make breakfast, okay?” She walked by him and poked his nose playfully, opening the fridge to get out some breakfast meats and eggs.
His eyes got wide, he had no idea she was hiding so much great food. He licked his lips and watched her every move now, which she found rather cute.
“Hehe...seems like you never learned much about your eating manners, did you? Well, since I’m actually here this time, I guess it would actually be a good time for me to teach you...”
Josh was still watching her very closely, hardly giving her space to breathe. He backed off a bit and stood there, waiting. “Well...um...ok. How do I start?”
Mary giggled a bit. “You really are hopeless, aren’t you? Well...start by sitting at the table. Try to be nice and quiet, and wait until the food is ready and done. I’ll bring it to the table when it is, and we’ll go on from there.”
Josh sat at the table and put his hands in his lap and twiddled his thumbs, not sure of what else to do. As Mary moved along with the bacon and sausage, the tasty-smelling aroma filled the air, and he felt like getting up right then and eating straight from the pan. Lucky for Mary, Josh had a bit more self control than that. His tail started to wag on its own, he grew in anticipation of the coming meal.
A bit later, Mary came back to the table, holding a couple of plates of food, which she set down. Steam came from the food, and he was almost out of his seat. He felt even more hungry than he had before, and he even drooled on his plate a little. Luckily, Mary didn’t seem to notice. She turned back to face him just as the drop hit the plate.
“Where...did you learn to cook such great food?!” Josh was nearly in a panic at this point.
“Well...complimenting the chef is always a sign of good manners...so congratulations. You’re off to a good start.” She giggled and smiled playfully, sitting across from him.
“Well...um...ok..” He was glad that he hadn’t done something wrong. “So what is next?”
“Well, lets see how you eat, exactly.”
Josh quickly dug in, ignoring the utensils at his disposal, and started to munch down on the food before him, and in a matter of seconds, his hands were already a mess and so was some of his face. Mary couldn’t help but laugh at him. “What?” he asked, literally puzzled.
Mary took a napkin and wiped his face clean, and set it in his hands. “Well, do yourself a favor and wipe the grease from your hands...”
Josh wiped his hands until he couldn’t feel that weird stuff in his hands anymore, and set the napkin back on the table. “Ok, now what exactly do I do?”
Mary taught him through example. First, she picked up the fork, and speared a piece of sausage. “Pick up your fork, yes...the one with these pointy things, and poke it into a small piece of sausage...” She bit down and started to chew her food politely. Josh watched closely, he took this like a real learning experience. Mary swallowed her food and spoke again. “Ok, now you try it Josh...you can eat just about everything before you in that way. And I’m keeping a close eye on you. Just to inspire you a bit more...every polite thing I see you do gets you one minute of kissing tonight...” She knew he would take her seriously, but whether or not she would do it was her own choice. Rather than rushing in to finish the food quickly so he didn’t screw up, Josh ate slowly and politely, trying not to make any mistakes.
And that was just for breakfast, she thought. I wonder just how interesting tonight will be...
