Prologue
It had been a dreadfully long journey the past 5 days. Nothing but constant rain had drenched her clothing and bag and had left poor Yakool her elk sopping wet and sluggish. Hazel stopped a moment taking a deep breath of the wet chilly air and reaching up to grab her black wide brimmed hat and wringing it out. Although she knew this act was pointless for the constant drizzle of rain continued it certainly made her hat feel lighter. Yakool nudged her in the back obviously urging her forward so they could continue so they could find some shelter and wait out the weather. "Urgh...I usually love the rain but this is just getting annoying." she glanced at Yakool which snorted a bit in repose. His hot breath sending puffs of steam into the chilly air. Hazel looked up at the sky as they continued there long pointless drudge through the mud, the dark clouds partially covering up the sun which tried desperately to shine through. Hazel sighed "Oi this is ridiculous"
Chapter One "Beautiful World"
Hazel ran a brush through her long black hair as she gazed out the opening the cave. It was a small space but it would do for now until the weather let up. She stood up and walked over to her rugged and frayed bag, putting her brush in it. Hazel glanced over at Yakool. The rather large, red, elk had taken to the far corner of the cave, his harness and packs removed, he now stretch his stiff muscles, his nostrils flared taking in the new smells of there hideout and releasing white stem wisps into the air. He glanced over at Hazel, his big brown eyes staring at her unwaveringly. She smiled "We'll get out of here soon", he seem to nod slightly. Hazel nodded in return before returning to her pack. She took her sopping wet, long black, frayed trench coat off, then her black wide brimmed hat and the red bandanna that tied her hair back and lay them on a bolder nearby to dry, although she was certain that they wouldn't in this damp air. The rhythmic pitter patter of rain was soothing almost like a heart beat.
Hazel settled against her back against a bolder, a small fire crackled nearby and had given her enough heat to dry the clothes she wore. The warmth had also lured Yakool, who now had settled himself close to her and lay down. His head was up and his tired brown eyes fought to stay open, but sleep called and lured him just as the fire did and soon his eyes closed and remained shut. Hazel looked out, it was now dark out and the rain seemed to let up a little but she still wasn't going to take her chances and venture out at night in this horrible weather. Besides the inside of the cave was dry and she didn't want to travel a little ways and end up making camp on wet ground. Waiting here till day would be much easier.
Hazel sat quietly listening to the rain, a couple cracks of thunder echoed out as her eyes drifted close like Yakool, and she fought to stay awake. It would defiantly be unwise to sleep until she could find a proper place to rest, like an inn. But even in these dark times not even the company of man could be trusted. Hazel knew also that sleeping now when she had run into a band of orcs a few miles back would be unwise, but it had been two days since she had a good rest and her exhaustion finally won the battle over her common sense.
Hazel woke early the next morning with a start. She sat up from her spot on the dirt floor of the cave. She looked about to make sure everything was still in peace and breathed a sigh in relief when it was. Hazel smiled again when she was also greeted by the bright sunshine showing down upon her and the birds outside singing. Finally after 4 days of rain the sun was out. Hazel stood and went over to her clothes which were now nothing more then a little damp and cold but nothing that wouldn't drying later on during the day. She picked a little mud off of her jacket before putting it on, it too was slightly chilly but it would do. Hazel shivered slightly.
She got everything back on kicking some dirt onto the few red glowing embers of her fire before grabbing her back pack and strapping it back on. Hazel whistled for the red elk which seemed to have abandoned the stuffy cave to graze just outside on the lush green grass.
She called to him, he immediately trotted over allowing her to re-strap his harness and packs. Hazel dropped the reins a moment to tie her hair up in a bun before replace her dirty red bandana in her hair, covering it and then placing her black hat back on. Hazel smiled and nodded to Yakool "Ready"
They had traveled none stop for hours and now Hazel stood on a hill, holding Yakool's reins loosely as she gazed out over the land before her. The reins were for more of a comfort for then to bind him to her. Yakool always followed no matter what and they were very close.
The land she was traveling through was beautiful, sparse clutches of trees here and there, getting denser and lush the further away she could see which grew to enormous heights. Hazel had never been in this area before and didn't know if there was any civilization around, but Hazel hoped that she would be able to enjoy the scenery and not have to worry about orcs, she despised the creatures and they had become more common as of late, but as far as she could see the forest seemed undisturbed and tranquil. Any folks that lived in this surrounding area she hoped were friendly and hospitable so that she would be able to replenish her supplies.
The south of her home was very different in that there were many more trees. Up north were she lived large grassy plains as far as the eye could see were what dominated the land. Only few forests existed and where they did they were huge, and ancient, populated by dangerous and fascinating creatures of all sorts.
After-noon started to come around and Hazel winced a little, she had already been walking for so long and as late afternoon approached quickly, without a break, her poor feet started to ache a little. Hazel usually rode on Yakools back but this rainy weather and muddy ground was just too brutal to make the elk carry her and her effects...not that he ever complained. She gazed about, the ground had already become mostly solid again and had even started to dry so she supposed that it would be safe to ride now.
Hazel walked over to the giant red elk, placing a hand on his antler and rump, he dipped his head down a little allowing her a better grasp. "Ready..." his eyes looked back lazily at her. Hazel lifted herself with a giant heave onto his back. He was far taller then her, perhaps taller then many normal horses and she being a rather short, found no difficulty on getting onto him. Years of practice had made it easier and less embarrassing on her part, having fell many times during her childhood and been scolded by her master who was in charge of her training. Hazel settled herself in, wiggling a little the make sure she was secure on his back before picking up the reins and urging him forward. “Alright, let's go then”
AN: Sorry that chapter took so long, I swear that it's going to get more interesting from here on out. I just wanted to establish Hazel's character before I move on with the story. The type of Elk I am describing doesn't exist and is something made purely by my imagination and also a combination of princess Mononoke...I also used the same name as the elk in that movie because I liked it so much. If you want an idea of what Yakool looks like, think of the redness of the elk from Princess Mononoke as well as the size but with the look of a modern elk. This was a dream I had so if it's bizarre, be gentle with the criticisms and all flamers will be used to heat my ramen. The chapter title is the ending song for Kino's journey.
