Chapter 1
A Glitter of Annoyance

“Elijah! You forgot to sprinkle the Luck Fairy's dust on yourself this morning. Now you're going to fail your test.” Elena warned, catching up to her brother. They were waiting for their morning bus at the end of their driveway.
“It is highly improbable that I get any lower than a B-, due to my studying. Besides, it isn't really fairy dust; it is only shiny glitter in a fancy bottle labeled `fairy dust'. It was probably made in China.” Just then he saw something fast and glittery in the corner of his eye. He turned to see what it was, but his sister interrupted his train of thought.
“How would you know? Maybe the Luck Fairy lives in China, and whose to say that fairy dust isn't just magical glitter? It doesn't matter anyway because someday something magical is going to happen to you. Not because you deserve it, but because it will want to prove to you that magic is real. Then where will your logic be?” Elena turned her attention away from him and focused on the road. Either watching for the bus or ignoring her brother, maybe both.
“My logic will be right here in my head, and nothing magical will happen `cause there is no magic,” he thought to himself. “What's that?” He saw the thing again, and once again his sister interrupted him.
“BUS!” She hollered as loudly as she possibly could. She ran to the bus to get on while he followed slowly behind her. He hoped to see the thing in a good enough view to identify it. “COME ON! I don't want to be late for school.” She yelled at him from the doorway. He hurried on as to not upset her anymore than he had.

As more children got on, the bus had gone form a calm quiet to a low, dull roar. Everyone's voices ran together, it was starting to sound as if somebody had turned up a radio catching too many stations.
Elijah looked back towards the back of the bus to check on his sister. She was sitting with her normal friends talking about their normal things. “Ah sweet, sweet normality. How I adore thee.” He was lost in his own thoughts again. Then he saw the glittery thing again, only this time he saw two. “WHAT ARE THOSE THINGS?” He meant to think it, but ended up shouting it. He looked around nervously, a little flushed, to see if anyone heard him. To his luck, everyone was so wrapped up in talking that nobody heard him.
“Alright, evrybdy offf.” The bus driver yelled at everyone. He always talked like he was drunk or something, but nobody really noticed anymore.
“You plan on spending the day on the bus?” Elena told her brother as she passed him on the way off. Elijah looked up, snapped out of his trance. He had been trying to put logic into this “glittery thing”; unfortunately he had only come up with one solution, and didn't quite meet his standards.
“Oh, yeah.” He got up and headed out the folded doors of the bus. “So, it was only a reflection off of a reflective surface” he reassured himself. He heard the bell ringing, warning him to rush to his Geometry class.
~*~*~*~
On the bus ride home, he sat with his sister. They talked about the school day and how much homework they had gotten. Once they reached their small brick house, Elena ran to the door and almost fell.
“Walk much?” Elijah joked.
“Nope, not a bit.” she replied, holding her head up high with a huge grin on her face.
“Hey kids.” Their dad greeted them from the porch. From the looks of it, he had just finished reading the paper and a sandwich.
“Hi dad.” They both said in unison. They both ran up to give him a kiss on the cheek, then rush in the house for snacks and homework. However, before Elijah could get to his dad, he saw the two glitters again, and he thought he heard someone say something. He stopped in his tracks and looked about him.
“Ground got your foot?” his dad joked at him.
“No, just afraid to go near you. I might catch something” he joked right back. He ran to give his dad a kiss so he could get some of the cookies they were running out of before Elena ate them all. He ran into the kitchen, and a few seconds too late from the looks of it.
“Shorry. You're jushed foo lafe,” she said with pieces of cookie flying out of her mouth. She swallowed her mouth-full before repeating herself. “I said sorry. You're just too late.” She put on a grin before handing him the last three cookies.
“Thanks. I'm going to do my work outside under Joe. If you need my help, I'll be right outside.” He stuffed the cookies in his mouth and walked outside to sit under Joe.
Joe was this huge oak tree in their yard. Elena named it Joe, for various unknown reasons. Beneath it was an old bench that his mother and father had built. Before she had died. Sometimes he'd come out here just to sit an think of the memories they'd all had out there in the yard. All the times they played Frisbee, football, and had campouts and picnics. Before that day when she left to get his sister some chocolate and someone crashed into her car.
He looked up at the old oak then down at the bench. On the side was a carving of a heart and all of the family's initials. They were pretty weathered and worn, but you could see where they were and what they said.
He sat down to work on his English essay. “I swear, if one `glitter' shows up, I'll squash it like a bug.” He was talking to no one in particular. Then he added quietly, “a very fast, shiny bug.” Then he picked up his pencil and started working diligently on his essay.
“You know, I could take that comment as a threat.”
A small voice commented. “Oh, and my name isn't `glitter'”
